About The Owner

My wife and I purchased our home in Hawaii in 2000. We are pleased to offer this unique Japanese living experience to you when we are away.

The Owner purchased this house in 2000

Why The Owner chose Keaau

We looked for several years for a home on the Big Island that we would enjoy living in. The unique Japanese design, quality of construction, open living areas, ocean view, private and peaceful setting made this home an easy choice for us.

What makes this house unique

This is where my wife and I go to get away from it all. It is easy to forget the normal pressures of everyday life in this private and peaceful setting-our Sanctuary in Paradise!

We own the lot across the street from our house. The lot was hand cleared to preserve the natural flow of the lava. Our landscapers have planted many native plants. Guests are welcome to take a walk on the 1 acre lot.

Unique home

  • 4 of 5

We had a car but some people might find this a bit out of the way. On the road to Pahio from Hilo but 4 miles down a side road. Very unique home with some cool features. The home being older didn't bother us but it could use some fresh maintenance in some things. Eg. The window screens. Lots of bugs in the evenings, like "noseeums", mosquitoes etc. The king suite was lovely but the bed in the other wing was terrible and needs replacing unless you like rock hard. We had a lot of pain by the end of the week in that bed. Rural setting - lots of noisy frogs and roosters at night. But a beautiful property and a lovely home. Have to get your drinking water at transfer stations out on the hwy. Not really a big inconvenience but good to know. Some handy extras like cooler, lawn chairs and snorkel/beach stuff.

Unique and charming Japanese home near the ocean

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days in the indoor / outdoor home south of Hilo. The place was warm and stuffy when we arrived, but once we opened the place up (and there are many ways to open the place up, it cooled down to a comfortable ambient temperature in a hurry.

One couple, two kids, and one aunt were very comfortable, with the boys sharing a den, and the adults each getting a bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

When the rain stopped, we used the chilly outdoor pool (also ambient temperature). But the cool felt good after a nice run around the rural neighborhood.

The master bathroom is a trip with a sunken shower and a rotary phone next to the toilet at just the right height. I didn't think to check for a dial tone, but I was sure to get a picture. Some of the furnishings and decoration is outdated, but the house is pretty cool, regardless.

The coqui frogs and chickens do make some racket throughout the neighborhood, so if you're sensitive to noise at night, consider white noise and / or ear plugs.

Our favorite place to hang out was the covered lanai between the living room and master suite. You can open up the house to the front, and enjoy the evening in any weather.

The home was a great value for us. Thanks for the opportunity!

Oh, and be sure to check out the King's bath at Ahalauni Park, about 20 minutes to the south on your home from the Volcano Park.

A.K.A.The "Dojo" house

  • 5 of 5

I cant wait to stay in this house again. 10 days on the Big Island. Half in Hilo and the other half in Kona. Best time spent was the time in Hilo and this house. I loved the Kung Fu movie feel of the house. One giant structure for the living, eating, tv area. 2 more structures for each of the Master bedrooms. Another structure with coaches and a fireplace. The best part.....the garden courtyard in the middle of it all with its covered porches. Loved the layout and feel of the house. Great gardens all around. Ocean very close but great only for fishing. Only negative was that the house was dated but as a General Contractor I wouldn't remodel it either. Its too unique and obviously well cared for. Thank you for sharing your "Dojo" with me. Loved it

We really enjoyed staying at your place!

Everything about your property is beautiful! I really liked the open areas through out the house and especially enjoyed the garden and pond in the center of it all. We'd definitely stay here again! Only change I'd make is the inside-locking of the slide doors/windows to make it easier to lock from the inside. Other than that, the whole property layout is well planned including the front and back yards. Beautiful property inside and out.
