Beautiful, characterful house by the sea

We had a lovely stay at Oldestairs. We enjoyed its arts and crafts-style decor. It was very charming - and also massive! The proximity to the sea was great, and being a short walk from a nice pub which did good food was a big bonus.

Beautiful house near the beach

We had a wonderful time at Oldestairs. The house is beautiful and full of character and Keepers Cottages made everything extremely easy for us. The beds are really comfy and while it’s an old house everything works well. The location is fantastic, moments from the beach and there is masses to do in the surrounding area.

This house is beautifully decorated and has large gardens. The sea is just at the end of the lane. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

A lovely house for a family reunion

The house and garden were gorgeous and extremely spacious and comfortable for our family reunion of 10 adults. The location was perfect for walks along the coast and pubs within easy walking distance for an.evening out. Ireretecommrdefinitrecpmmrecommend

Christmas at Oldestairs

We had a wonderful time at Oldestairs. The house is very beautiful and well appointed with everything one needs. We thought that two bathrooms for ten people would be tough, but there are two extra guest toilets and some basins in the bedrooms that alleviated the pressure on the shared facilities.

Fantastic house for group holiday

Absolutely loved Oldestairs House. The bedrooms are great. The reception rooms are generous and comfortable. There's a wonderful, relaxed ambiance to the house which adds to the holiday vibe. There are some fabulous walks from the door. The weather was terrible, but the house has enough room to accommodate the great British vacation. Ubers in the area are also really easy to get so we could walk to St Margaret's Bay and taxi back when the rain came in. The games room could do with a little love, and we missed the football table (which appears in the photos, but was not in the house). I would also be tempted to put a more comfortable set of chairs in the small, strip sunroom. I can't speak highly enough of the service from Keepers Cottages. Lovely holiday, great house, good location would recommend.

Oldstairs Cottage

An excellent, spacious, well furnished house with a large garden in a wonderful location close to the shingle beach and walking distance from at least two pubs. Lovely walks along the coast path to Deal, or along the cliffs to St Margaret's Bay and beyond. The kitchen was spacious and well equipped but could do with more mugs and saucepans and crockery/cutlery for children. The games room was a great success with both adults and children although the table football needed some repairs. The garden was safe and large.

Oldstairs house

We had six adults and two children under five. House old but spacious. Plumbing not adequate for that number. Only one usable shower and bath. Kitchen good and well equipped. Location good very near pebble beach.Garden large and safe for children. With work could become great house to stay in.

The owners have tried their best to maintain all original features and the original layout of this historic property, and so this is why they have decided not to add in more bathrooms at this time. We feel that this adds to the charm and character in staying in such a property, but appreciate this feedback none the less. We're pleased that you made the most out of this lovely coastal location.

A recommended holiday home for groups of up to 10 people

Our party of seven greatly enjoyed their stay at Oldestairs House in Kingsdown. The house, 50 metres from the beach, has character and style. The rooms and bathrooms are comfortable and neat. The kitchen is well equipped. Dining room and living room are spacious, but on the dark side. There is a large garden and a cool terrace. We were surprised in the garden by a fox that came to pick a piece of stilton cheese from our table. The house is close to the Saxon Shore Way. The walk from Kingstown to Dover is lovely.

Beautiful arts & crafts house in perfect location

A group of 7 ladies stayed here for our 12th annual walking weekend. This was a really special house, full of character, out of an Agatha Christie story! We cooked in both nights in the well equipped kitchen, ate in the beautiful dining hall and played games in the lounge, with its fabulous wooden panelling.We did a lovely 12 mile walk on the Saturday and some of us swam in the sea a couple of times. The pebbly beach is 2 mins away. A really special place. And the company Keepers Cottages were fantastic from start to finish. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Brilliant customer service.

Wonderful family weekend

Oldstairs House, is a grand old lady. A bit creaky here and there, and worn in places, although clean and tastefully dressed. Kitchen well equipped and dining hall sat 10 comfortably. Beds were comfy and rooms were so dark and quiet at night, therefore good night’s sleep. Be aware that there is only one shower in the en-suite, no problem, but had to queue in the morning. The children loved all the different levels, nooks and crannies and thoroughly enjoyed the large, safe garden. Location is perfect for beach and walks. Couldn’t get a table in the Zetland Arms, need to book weeks in advance. Overall, Oldstairs is a place to kick off your shoes and relax. We all had a lovely time.

Lovely house

We loved the quirkiness of the house and the decor and the location, so would recommend it on those basis. Couple of comments though - could do with an extra shower for a large party, and the shower is in one of the bedrooms which just meant it took a bit of logistics as we were a group of friends staying, not families. The garden hadn't been maintained and the lawns weren't mown and there weren't many places to sit out which was a shame as the weather was great on Saturday. I think that for the price, you'd expect the outside to be in a good condition. And in the twin room on the first floor, the single duvet on the bed furthest from the door smelt strongly of cat pee - the duvet was clean, but that's a smell that doesn't easily come out, so I think that that should be changed.

Wonderful week at Oldestairs!

We had a fantastic week at this beautiful and expansive home in the quaint village of Kingsdown. Location is perfect for us - a stone's throw from busier Deal but closer to the quieter beach area of Kingsdown and the lovely Zetland Arms which is just a few minutes walk from your doorstep. The benefit of being a bit farther away is also the larger houses found in this area and Oldestairs was a perfect example of large Arts & Crafts style property with a huge garden and plenty of space for the children to run around and enjoy themselves. The house is vast - much bigger than illustrated in the photographs, and the garden in particular was enormous! One slight comment was that despite the garden being so big there was no outdoor table and only 4 garden chairs - which for a house that sleeps 8 was a bit inconvenient – and a shame to not be able to dine outside in the evenings near the Barbeque and firepit. Although the owner did kindly allow us to use a table they had stored away for our visit - it's perhaps something for them to consider investing in for future guests. The house itself was beautifully and thoughtfully decorated throughout and retained a plethora of original features all in immaculate condition which was so nice to see! Despite it being quite warm, there was a lovely breeze off the sea so we felt quite comfortable sleeping at night - and the outside balcony or front terrace were lovely places to sit and have a drink in the evenings. We found a few things were missing when we checked in but the team at Keepers got those replaced as quickly as possible. They really are very helpful and attentive and despite asking quite a few things of them whilst we were there, nothing seemed like too much trouble - which is why we would always choose them when booking on the Kent Coast. Overall a fantastic home and we hope to visit again in the near future.

We had a wonderful short stay at this fabulous example of the Arts and Crafts era, sympathetically modernised to reflect today’s expectations whilst maintaining the integrity of the house. A privilege to stay and enjoy the experience.

A perfect seaside retreat

Oldestairs House is absolutely stunning. A cosy, well appointed, romantic country house, which has been made even more special by a thoughtful and tasteful unified contemporary design. Every room is beautiful. The house goes on forever (the photos don't show the half of it!), meaning there's no danger of ever feeling cramped, even with a full house. We stayed at Oldestairs over New Year and, although it wasn't very cold, cosy nights by the fire and playing games in the gorgeous living room were top of the bill. We also made frequent trips to the beach for some chilly swims followed by cosy pints at the lovely Zetland Arms (book to avoid disappointment!) Walking North along to the coast to Deal or South along the cliffs to St Margarets made for good days out. I really can't recommend this house highly enough. Everything was in perfect working order, the kitchen had everything we could possibly need and more, every bed in every room was very comfortable. I'm already looking at booking again for the summer - I can imagine how beautiful the house, its garden and the area would be when it's warm and sunny. Thank you for the perfect end to 2021, a fantastic start to 2022, and for providing everything I needed for a gathering of much loved friends after a difficult couple of years.
