The island of Pantelleria is located 70 km from the African coast and 85 km from Sicily; designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 for its “alberello” vine-training method and recently proclaimed Italy’s 24th National Park, it is distinguished by the rural character of its landscape. Mediterranean scrub is found almost everywhere; among the most common shrubs are heather—which abounds here—rosemary, thyme, and broom. Thanks to a project initiated by the Sicilian Regional State Forestry Agency, these trails have been revitalized and now span approximately 200 km of hiking trails. Of these, 38 km are also suitable for mountain bikers. You’ll find yourself immersed in unspoiled nature, encountering endemic species of flora and fauna and being captivated by the striking contrasts of colors and scents between the volcanic landscape—covered in Mediterranean scrub—the gentle slopes of the cultivated terraces, and the blue of the sea. Swimming is quite easy thanks to the vast expanses of smooth stone, called “balate,” which alternate with black, jagged rocks of the most bizarre shapes.
If each of us has a “somewhere else,” for me it’s Pantelleria. It’s a place to be discovered little by little and one that truly takes time to appreciate in all its nuances. I discovered this island a few years ago thanks to a friend, and I fell in love with it because it’s one of a kind—its wild beauty, combined with a touch of Mediterranean charm, never ceases to amaze me. It’s not for everyone, and in my eyes, that only adds to its allure. In Pantelleria, you can immerse yourself in unspoiled nature—whether by diving into the blue sea, going for a run by the lake, or visiting the natural sauna… but I don’t want to give everything away.
