Character Cottage on Exmoor

Smiddy Cottage is a charming and characterful retreat tucked away within West Hollowcombe Farm, offering a peaceful escape for up to four guests in the heart of Exmoor National Park.

Thought to originally be the farm blacksmith's workshop, the cottage has been thoughtfully converted while retaining much of its original charm. The accommodation includes a comfortable bedroom which can be arranged as either a super-king or twin room, together with a cosy mezzanine sleeping area accessed by ladder, creating a unique and memorable space for families, couples and adventurous guests.

The open-plan living area centres around a traditional log burner, making Smiddy particularly inviting throughout the year. Large windows frame beautiful countryside views, while the private terrace provides the perfect spot for morning coffee, outdoor dining or simply enjoying the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape.

Guests have access to the wider West Hollowcombe Farm estate, including ancient woodland, riverside walks, a children's play area and 55 acres of beautiful Exmoor countryside. Whether you're looking for long walks, wildlife watching, wild swimming or simply a chance to switch off and relax, everything is right on your doorstep.

Located close to Tarr Steps, Dulverton, Withypool and the stunning North Devon coastline, Smiddy Cottage is ideally placed for exploring one of England's most beautiful national parks.

The host was polite welcoming and helpful.the general cleanliness was good. Well situated for walking with wonderful views. The local area has limited amenities which is not a problem, arrive with your own supplies for your stay. It can take longer to get to due to narrow roads and road conditions.I would book again.

West Hollowcombe Farm is the result of a dream to leave city life behind and create a home in one of the most beautiful corners of the country.

After many years living and working in London, we were drawn to Exmoor by its spectacular landscapes, abundant wildlife and slower pace of life. When we first visited West Hollowcombe, with its rolling hills, ancient woodland and river running through the farm, we knew we had found somewhere special.

Smiddy Cottage was once the farm's blacksmith's workshop and has been lovingly restored to create a cosy and characterful place for guests to enjoy. Today, it forms part of our family home, where we live with our three children, a friendly dog, an antisocial cat, chickens, sheep and horses.

We love sharing this special place with visitors and helping them discover everything that makes Exmoor so memorable. Whether it's a morning walk through the woods, an afternoon by the river or a quiet evening beside the log burner, we hope Smiddy Cottage provides the perfect setting to unwind and reconnect with nature.

We purchased West Hollowcombe Farm because we wanted to exchange the pace of city life for something more connected to nature, family and the outdoors.

After years living and working in London, we dreamed of finding somewhere our children could grow up surrounded by countryside, wildlife and open space. When we first visited West Hollowcombe, we were captivated by the ancient woodland, the river, the far-reaching views and the sense of peace that seems to exist here in every season.

The collection of traditional farm buildings, including what is now Smiddy Cottage, offered an exciting opportunity to preserve part of Exmoor's rural heritage while creating welcoming places for visitors to enjoy.

Today, we feel privileged to call West Hollowcombe home and love sharing this special corner of Exmoor with guests from all over the world.

Unlike many holiday cottages, guests can leave the car behind and immediately access miles of walking routes, bridleways, ancient woodland and open moorland directly from the property. The beautiful River Barle and iconic Tarr Steps are close by, while the wider farm offers woodland, wildlife, children's play facilities and spectacular views across Exmoor.

For horse owners, stabling and grazing can be arranged, making Smiddy an excellent base for riding holidays. Families particularly appreciate the freedom for children to explore, while couples enjoy the peace, dark skies and sense of escape that the location provides.

The combination of authentic character, beautiful surroundings and genuine Exmoor hospitality makes Smiddy a memorable place to stay throughout the year.
