For kids, grannies, grandads, aunties, uncles, cousins and up to three small dogs, Battle Retreat is a boutique hideaway complete with summer swimming pool and oodles of all-round wow. Get your lengths in before breakfast on the terrace, then walk the five-acre forest and vineyard.

Keep your fitness up at your own retreat with lifting weights in the gym and hours of countryside walking. Let the kids burn off energy on the garden trampoline. Stroll to the magic yew tree at Crowhurst church – or just two minutes to the pub. Recover on the family bench swing.
Inside, modern luxuries marry with classic swagged curtains and Queen Anne legs. There’s a spa-like calm about the modern bathrooms, and games, books and BT Wi-Fi to while away the evening hours. Breathe deeply on the beaches, eat well from Battle Deli, sleep in plush four-posters. Wellness never felt so well-to-do.

Swimming pool, gardens and grounds
Wander and wonder in the three-and-a-half acres plus five acres of forest and vineyard. Take the seafront running and cycle trails close by. Swim in the ten-metre pool, open from
April until October.

Kids will love burning energy on the trampoline; you might prefer the gentle rocking of the family bench swing. Wrap up your day tracking the stars on the terrace with a gin
and tonic.

Living spaces
These are spaces you might have seen on your screen, with Channel 4, Channel 5, the BBC, E4 and more calling regularly for reality TV shows set among the plush sofas, swagged curtains and polished floors of Grade II-listed Battle Retreat. Here, modern luxuries combine with a classic feel to give you the best of everything.

Your sense of wellness is at the heart of the wholesome, hearty activities on offer. After walks and swimming outside, come home to books and board games on tap, and a gym with weights and box step, plus mats, straps and boards for yoga and Pilates.

You’ve BT Wi-Fi to keep in touch and feed your Instagram, and luxury at every turn. Relax, spread out in numerous living spaces, stare at the skies from the conservatory.
Kick off the shackles of modern living among sash windows, ornate chandeliers, leather sofas and the occasional suit of armour.

Cooking and dining
You’ve room for 20 around the dining table beneath the beams and chandeliers, or eat out on the terrace by the pool. If you don’t fancy putting your apron on and manning the fan oven with five-burner hob, might we suggest booking our own in-house detox menu, complete with juice selection plus raw and cooked vegetarian food.

Telephone for takeaways from Muktha for delicious Indian, Nazar for Turkish such as lamb shish, kofte and their own baklava, or Thai at Orchid, with all chefs trained in Thailand, for a ‘weeping tiger’ or great vegan options. Or go to town – while staying at home – with all manner of tasty treats from Battle Kebabs and Fish and Chips.

Eating out? Pop in to The Plough in Crowhurst for smoky chilli chicken wings or lamb- shank goulash, to The Abbey Hotel in Battle for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or to The
Bull Inn for crispy-chicken burger or halloumi burger. Or head to Trinity of Battle for contemporary dining with a traditional twist.

Dine fresh at Webbe’s Rock-a-Nore, where fresh fish make the one-minute journey across the shingle beach. Or try the taste of a Michelin star at The Curlew in Bodiam, with simple and seasonal plates from land and sea with ingredients that change according to what’s available from the smallholding farm and the local fishermen.

Bedrooms
Surrounded by three-and-a-half acres of gardens and five acres of woodland and a vineyard, you’ll sleep like one of the fallen logs that lie in the forest. Choose from 13 sumptuous bedrooms that sleep up to 27.

Bedroom one is a four-poster suite with an extra-superking and en-suite shower room. Bedrooms two (Yellow), three (Green), four (Red), five (Blue) and six (purple) are
doubles with en-suite shower rooms, while bedrooms seven (Yellow 2 nd Floor), eight (Red), nine (Lilac) and ten (Green 2 nd Floor) offer twins and an en-suite shower room.

On the ground floor, bedroom 11 is a garden suite with a double bed and en-suite with luxury bath, and bedrooms 12 and 13 provide twin beds and shared shower rooms and toilets. Ground-floor accommodation is good for those with mobility restrictions.

Everything inside was clean and beautiful, it was comfortable, warm and the perfect place to unwind and reset. Learn about ‘1066 and all that’ at the site of England’s biggest battle or catch a re- enactment. Get cultured at the De La Warr Pavilion. Hike the Seven Sisters, boat along the river, or Go Ape at Bedgebury. Meet reef sharks at Hastings Aquarium and red pandas at Drusilla’s, or travel back in time on the Kent and East Sussex Railway.
