Region: From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain’s best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
Town: Lochailort is a picturesque lochside hamlet resting between Glenuig and Glenfinnan in the Scottish Highlands. Set along the famous Road to the Isles, the hamlet is known for its dramatic Highland scenery, rugged coastline, and spectacular views across Loch Ailort and Loch nan Uamh. Despite its peaceful setting, Lochailort offers a selection of attractions including the historic Prince's Cairn, which marks the landing place of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and the striking Loch nan Uamh Viaduct, part of the iconic West Highland railway line. Visitors can enjoy dining at the local inn, while nearby villages provide convenient places to stock up on everyday essentials. Within easy reach of the hamlet is the popular village of Glenfinnan, famed for the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct, one of Scotland's most photographed landmarks, and the Glenfinnan Monument, which commemorates the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The nearby visitor centre offers fascinating insight into the area's rich history and heritage. Lochailort is also an excellent base for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by the rugged landscape known as the Rough Bounds, the area offers a wealth of walking opportunities, from gentle lochside routes to more challenging mountain hikes. Cyclists, canoeists, and kayakers are equally well catered for, while wildlife lovers can explore nearby Loch Shiel, one of Scotland's largest freshwater lochs, where boat trips provide opportunities to spot golden eagles, red deer, and other native wildlife. Further afield, the charming coastal village of Arisaig offers beautiful white-sand beaches and far-reaching views towards the Small Isles, whilst the bustling fishing port of Mallaig provides ferry connections to the Inner Hebrides, seafood restaurants, and access to some of Scotland's most spectacular coastal scenery. Together, these nearby destinations make Lochailort a wonderful base for exploring the wild beauty of the West Highlands.
