'The Big House' Classic Opdateret Farmhouse

Although I was born and raised in New York, I spent every summer growing up across the street from the Big House, where my family has deep roots. Many of our relatives still live in the area, and we now live directly across the road ourselves.

We’ve been welcoming guests to the Big House for many years and have really enjoyed the people we’ve had the opportunity to meet along the way. It’s always fun to meet families who are here enjoying their vacation, and we hope we’ll have a chance to meet you during your stay.

Barbara manages the Big House for us and will be your primary contact before and during your stay. We’re nearby if needed, but otherwise we’re happy to let you settle in and enjoy the house and your time in Maine.

The Big House and the surrounding neighborhood have a long history. The original Cape Cod portion of the house was built in the early 1800s, with additions made over the years as was common with Maine’s old saltwater farms. Originally owned by the Sherman family, the property has served at different times as a farm, bed and breakfast, post office and summer rental.

The neighborhood has its own interesting history as well. Just to the right of the Big House once stood a dance hall and movie theater from the silent-film era, where Laura Sherman played piano for the movies. Farther down the road was the Grovehurst Inn and its cottages. The inn is long gone, but several of the cottages remain and are still owned by descendants of the Sherman family.

At the beach, you can still see traces of another chapter of the area’s history. Near the three large rocks to the left was once a steamboat landing that brought summer visitors from New York, Boston and beyond.

Generations of our family have loved this part of Maine, and we’re happy to share a little piece of it with our guests. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring the area and making memories of your own here.
