Annual stay

We have been coming for the last 4 years with our dogs and love our stay. It is close to everything and feels removed enough as well. Quiet, beautiful fire place. Well maintained and cozy.

Beautiful Weekend at the Hawk

We had such a lovely weekend staying in the Hawk cabin. Everything was perfectly clean and even better than described. The hosts are so kind and had very quick and helpful communication. We loved the quiet location that was close to so many trails!

Perfect getaway

This cabin is so cute and cozy. We’ve stayed there twice now and have loved it both times. It’s very clean. There are two other cabins on the property, but they are at a little distance, and it’s always very peaceful and quiet. We will stay here again I am sure.

Comfy cottage

Super cute property in the woods with Lake Superior close enough to hear the waves crashing. Truly you get the best of both worlds. The fireplace is very nice, and they provide plenty of wood. It’s nice to have another north shore option that accepts dogs. We can’t wait to come back this fall.

Our Happy Place

My bestie and have been coming here since 2006–always in winter. It is the perfect place to decompress and be creative. The beds are comfortable; the cobblestone fireplace is amazing. The hosts are responsive and friendly yet very respectful of their guests’ privacy. The only thing we really miss are the two old recliners that used to face the fireplace. The current chairs are attractive but not especially comfortable, especially when you’re staying for a week and spending most of your time indoors. I always say our week in Lutsen is the best week of the year. Thank you!

Northshore retreat

Cute, clean property. Only complaint is that it got pretty cold at night with no heat. There was a space heater, but did not want to use it as the plug in got very hot. Fire concern.

Cute, but cold.

We rented this cabin as a base for our ski trip, because it was dog friendly. The first night we got there, the furnace didn’t work and it got really cold inside. The fireplace was nice, but we couldn’t wake up often enough to keep it going, and there was just one little electric heater provided. After getting ahold of the owners the next morning, they came and relit the pilot on the old furnace, which did keep it warm during the day and into the next night. Then the pilot went out AGAIN and it was pretty cold when we woke up. They came and relit the pilot again, but obviously the furnace is unreliable. We also found the cabin pretty cramped for the four of us, and we had a hard time finding places inside to store our ski gear. The listing said it sleeps six, but I don’t see how that’s possible. We had us parents in one bed, our daughter in the other and our son slept on the couch. If the couch pulls out you’d have to rearrange all the furniture to get around it. Maybe it would be more comfortable over all for smaller people, we are all close to 6’, and the counter and beds were rather uncomfortable for people of our stature.

The property was exactly what we expected. The cabin was cozy, clean, had everything we needed and a perfect location for our North Shore activities. Host communication was very good. We would recommend.

Our family and dogs have stayed at this property over 30 times since 1996. In every season. Location ideal to explore the North Shore and all it has to offer.

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin! It was clean, cozy and very north woodsy feeling. The cabin had all the amenities we needed and we loved that it was pet friendly. The close proximity to state parks and Grand Marais was great. The cabin does not, however, have a porch as pictured which was a bit of a bummer. There was also no communication from the host until the day of check-in, which was not ideal for us. Other than some communication challenges with the host, the cabin is quaint, quiet and lovely. A nice getaway and we would recommend!

Great North Shore getaway

The Hawk is a fantastic little cabin on the north shore on a quiet road with the sound of the lake in the background. As a heads up, the cabin is much smaller than the pictures seem to show, and the front porch no longer exists, but otherwise it was clean and comfortable! We will certainly be looking to come back soon!

Great location!

The cottage was the perfect size for my husband and me. It was clean and in a very quiet area. Loved sleeping with the windows open. The location was fantastic! Not really that far from anything we wanted to do. Close to hiking and beaches. Host got back quickly with any questions I had.

Another Haven

This was our first time staying at the Hawk in the North Country Cottages. We have stayed in Little Loon and the Cedar many summers, but wanted to make sure we stayed at each cottage. The Hawk was perfect also! So peaceful, and so clean. Another little haven tucked in the woods.

Last Minute Trip to the North Shore

Was great to find this place that we could also bring our dogs with. Great location between Lutsen and Grand Marais. Just be ready for small bedrooms and beds. We did miss our king sized bed. And hope that the deck is rebuilt soon!

Wonderful spot for a weekend getaway!

My family, including our dog, so enjoyed our stay at "The Hawk" in Lutsen. The cabin is decorated perfectly and had everything that we needed. We appreciated the special touches, such as the fun stickers, and treats for our dog. The cabin is in a perfect location to explore Grand Marais and to take in local hikes. We especially enjoyed the Cascade River hike. Danni and Carl communicated with us before we arrived that the deck needs to be replaced and they created an outdoor space with chairs instead, which was just fine for us. I LOVED watching the hummingbirds enjoying the beautiful blooming rhododendron in front of the cabin. Such a treat! For families with children (young or adult), we all enjoyed the Putt n Pets mini golf in Grand Marais. We also liked eating at the Cascade Lodge, right up the road. The gallery and gift shop on the property is so well done with so many cute items. Thanks Danni and Carl! Wonderful family memories were made.

Birthday getaway

Loved our stay at the hawk! Check in was super easy, and the location was sooo quiet. Would definitely stay here again! Wish the store would’ve been open so we could’ve checked that out. Only drawback was the muddy driveway this time of year traveling with a dog. Thankfully we brought extra towels to keep the paws clean. Great spot on the north shore and a quick drive to grand Marais or lutsen/tofte!

We moved here from Chicago in 2013 looking to settle down in the North Woods and start a family. Our love of nature was a driving force. We were always trying to vacate the big city for camping and hiking excursions, so we decided that before we tried for children it would be great to put down roots somewhere very outdoor focused, so that our hopeful children would grow up surround by nature.

Danielle was born and raised in Minnesota and couldn’t wait to get back “home.” Spending time on the North Shore from the time she was 2, it always held a special place in her heart. Carl was born and raised in Ohio, but fell in love with the area on a visit in 2012.

We got married on the shore of Lake Superior shortly after moving here, bought our first home two years later, and were happy to welcome our first child in to the world in 2016! It’s been an incredible journey since we moved to the North Woods and the opportunity to become business owners has just added to the adventure.

We are so grateful to call these cottages ours, and will continue to put our time and efforts into improving on what is already here and so lovely.
