On the Normandy coast, in the Calvados department, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain has inspired writers, photographers, and painters for centuries with its beauty and light. A historic, active, and exotic destination, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is an ideal vacation spot for a rejuvenating getaway.
Located in the heart of the D-Day landing beaches, between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach, this small port was sandwiched between two famous landing zones in 1944. As a strategic location, the village’s oil port enabled the supply of Allied troops along the coast until July 1944.
Today, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is the leading fishing port in Calvados.
But the port is best known for its culinary specialty: scallops from the Bay of Seine. They are celebrated in particular during the month of November at the “Scallop and Seafood Festival” (known as “Goût du Large”), an opportunity for visitors and locals alike to share a warm, convivial moment over these savory, ocean-fresh delicacies.
To enjoy its friendly atmosphere, there’s nothing better than a stroll along the quays to admire the harbor’s panoramic view opening out onto the sea from one of the many terraces that dot the harbor.
Comfortably seated at a table, you can’t help but marvel at the poetic ballet of boats coming and going throughout the day.
Visit the fishing port, the shipyard, the fish market, and the semaphore tower, and follow the artists’ trail—artists like Georges Seurat and Paul Signac drew inspiration from the town for their paintings.
If there’s one must-see site in Port-en-Bessin, it’s undoubtedly the Vauban Tower: overlooking the harbor, this artillery tower, built in 1694, once served as a bulwark against invasions and protected the town with its large cannons.
Later converted into a powder magazine, this squat tower has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1948.
Finally, when it comes to activities, you can choose from sand yachting sessions, an introduction to sailing, a catamaran lesson, or a kayak trip.
The Omaha Beach Golf Course will delight golf enthusiasts with its two 18-hole courses overlooking the sea.
