We would have ranked this stay a 5-star, except for the nightmare checkout process. We had been communicating with the host (Sophie) through the VRBO app as required, including on the last day when we told her would be checking out around 11:00 the next day to which we got a thumbs up. At 10:45 Lucie (whose role was unclear) showed up, and demanded to know why we had not been in regular contact with Sophie. We showed her the many messages on VRBO with Sophie which silenced her momentarily, before she started on her next complaint which was that we were late checking out (this at 10:50) even though checkout was at 11. We had all our bags downstairs and loading our car at 11 when Lucie then announced that we could not simply load the dishwasher and turn it on. She required us to unload the dishwasher and wash and dry everything by hand, claiming this was clearly stated in the "rules" (which we never saw). That delayed our departure by 20 minutes, during which time Lucie continued to pace around the apartment and fume. We also disagree completely that we left the apartment unclean. We had vacuumed the entire place the night before, swept it again that morning, including the terrace. All linens were stripped from the beds, the refrigerator was emptied and all the food thrown away (again at Lucie's insistence). There was one mark on a chair which we wiped up. I can only assume that the score we received for the apartment was in retaliation for our checkout interaction with Lucie.
