The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived! The property is incredibly peaceful and calming. I loved sitting at the picture window each morning and having coffee while looking out at the snow covered landscape and the flowing water of the river! The decor and color palette used throughout are perfection. After a day exploring outside we loved coming in to cook warm meals and settle down by the fire at night. Would definitely consider staying again!

This was by far the best property I’ve stayed at so far! Communication was amazing and there is a binder that has all of the information you could need. Including points of interest nearby for food, entertainment, etc. Wonderful views and a nice getaway location to connect with nature and relax to the sound of the river water right in the back yard.

WOW...The property exterior and interior were amazing!!!. There is not one inch of the property that doesn't say...The owners put incredible thought...effort...and Love into ensuring everything was put together unbelievably well to ensure our stay was the best it could be no matter what our plans were.

The Piney River house far exceeded our expectations and was perfect in every way. The home itself is cozy, beautifully decorated and very functional. The property is amazing with a gentle slope to the river and a large yard for games. We had a wonderful time and hope to return soon. 10/10; highly recommend!

Perfect place for a nice getaway. Our host Maria was one of those rare people even if you didn’t meet her in person, you know she is great! Always answered our questions promptly. Place was clean, filled with everything you can possibly need and more. We celebrated my wife’s birthday there. And her luck would have it we had 5 inches of snow. So it was simply magical. We will definitely go back in a different season to enjoy the outdoors.Thank you Maria!

Amazing house that my wife and I, our kids, and my parents all loved. Extremely clean and well stocked. Enjoyed coffee on the porch in the rockers in the morning and relaxing on the deck by the river in the evening. Kids and I loved wading around in the river. All in all, highly recommend.

Lovely creekside cottage

We all loved the cottage in Alhambra. The setting was amazing and peaceful tucked in among the mountains and overlooking the creek. The inside was lovely and our hosts had the place outfitted to fill all of our needs. This was one of our favorite stays!

Return Visit

This is our second time staying at the property and it only got better. The hosts do a wonderful job of keeping this property looking good and their attention to detail is great. We also enjoyed the freebies like the complimentary local tomatoes and eggs OR the apple cider donuts. I highly recommend this property.

Relaxing Cottage By the River

We always love coming here. Maria and Randy are top notch hosts and always go above and beyond to make the stay great. We had everything we needed and had a great time relaxing by the river, sitting by the camp fire, relaxing inside with a great view, and just enjoying everything the Piney River has to offer. Thanks again for an amazing stay! Great communication as well!

Beautiful Property in an Enchanted Forest

We had an amazing weekend stay at this property. Pictures cannot do it justice. The home is beautiful and elegantly updated, the backyard and river is gorgeous, and the hike near the house is like an enchanted forest - we encountered so many beautiful butterflies! I highly recommend a stay at this property; this place is a one of a kind gem.

This home is absolutely stunning. We felt as though we stepped in a modern design magazine shoot. The marriage of color, texture, and style perfectly complements the natural surroundings while maintaining a chic, contemporary vibe. The property is breathtaking, with a firepit, sprawling lawn, flowing creek, and fruit and nut trees.We loved being close to hiking in the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson National Forests, plus nearby wineries and breweries. In the evenings we enjoyed board games, cornhole, darts, and grilling under the stars—and best of all, we could bring our two dogs. Maria and Randy’s hospitality was unmatched. We didn’t want to leave this wonderland!

We purchased the home in 2022 after falling in love with its bones, history, and scenic Piney River views. It was built in 1926. Over the years it served many purposes but had since been abandoned and was in need of a lot of TLC. After one year of renovating, it ourselves, we are excited to invite guests to enjoy the beauty it offers.

The river you hear below is called the Piney River and flows for several miles....
Nestled at the base of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest this home is a peaceful escape and the perfect place to take a break from the city.
