Popa’a Palms: 3BR 2BA, 2 Blocks from the Ocean

Welcome to Popa’a Palms, our tropical oasis in the quiet coastal community of Hawaiian Beaches, near the village of Pahoa! Just two blocks away, stroll the breathtaking cliffs or lounge at the park and take in the colorful evening skies over the sea. In season the park is great place for whale watching.

Popa’a Palms is perfect for families and couples, offering plenty of privacy. The main floor (lower level) has two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The larger bedroom has one queen bed and one twin bed. The other downstairs bedroom has a comfortable queen sized bed and ensuite bathroom. The kitchen and living room are on the upper level, with one bedroom (with one queen bed) and bathroom. Enjoy ocean sounds and breezes on the spacious covered lanai! The dining table comfortably seats six people and two additional seats are at the bar in the kitchen. We also have multiple seating spots outside - on the lanai and below on the patio overlooking our fenced and landscaped yard.

Great family getaway. We enjoyed traveling into Hilo to snorkel, hike the caves, and visit Rainbow falls. We stayed for a week and a half and drove every main highway and stopped at all the state parks. The home was the calm between all the activities. We walk the neighborhood and went down to the park to look and hike around the ocean cliffs. We played cards and cooked together. The locals we ran into were very helpful on where to visit and the best food.

Lovely vacation home!

We had an issue with a few things being different from advertised but the rental company resolved quickly. The only minor call out is that there is no AC and the property gets very warm during the day - there are fans in every room which help!

Peaceful Hawaiian Getaway

Lots of lush vegetation around and a short walk to the coastline & park. Enjoy grilling out or take a short drive to dine out. Waterfalls and lava fields are also near.We enjoyed our location on this side of the island. The weather was great. We highly recommend staying here & would definitely stay here again.

I've had a hard time knowing how to review this property. As far as the house goes and the accuracy of the listing, it is actually 5 star. The house was very nice and it was clean and communication before and during our stay was great. The cliffside overlooking the ocean near the house is impressive. Mornings on the porch were lovely.All that said, we didn't love our time there, which is why I only gave it 3 stars. I had read reviews before that talked about not having AC, but that there were lots of fans and trade winds that made it bearable. Realizing most homes in the area also didn't have AC, this is why we ultimately picked this house. I am not sure if we were there at a particularly hot/humid time, or low trade wind time, but it was just hot...unpleasantly hot (and we are from Texas so we know hot/humid). We had all fans going constantly, all windows & screened doors open constantly (except doors when we were gone or sleeping). It just didn't cool off.The other hard thing for us personally was how far it was from so many things. Just to get to/from the main road was a 10 minute drive. Luckily, there is a grocery store, fast food, coffee shop, and a couple restaurants right at that intersection, but getting to the sites in Hilo or HVNP was a drive every time (to be fair, lots of things on the big island are a drive to get to no matter where you are staying but that extra 10 minutes each way was hard). So just be aware of this also.

Mahalo for your detailed and thoughtful review. You are correct - this summer has been much hotter than usual. I have been here for over 20 years and there's only one other summer I have ever experienced that was this warm and muggy. We all live in East Hawai'i and like most folks, we don't have any AC in our homes so we totally get it. I am very much looking forward to the end of summer this year!! This is a rural residential neighborhood in the fairly remote Puna district. The advertising websites are supposed to show a map on the listing page. It's important for guests to check the location of the property they are considering to make sure it will work for their needs. This is a spot for folks who are looking for an 'off the beaten path' type of experience, far from the crowds and tourist centers, but still a reasonable day trip for most locations on the island. We are very happy that you did enjoy the house in spite of the points you've mentioned. We have close to 50 different properties all over East Hawaii and hope we can host you at one of them next time you visit. What a Gem!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We absolutely loved our vacation on the Big Island and our stay at Popa'a Palms. We did several tours, including a cacao tasting at Honolii Orchards, and a tour of the Hawaiian Vanilla Company. One of our favorite activities was visiting Ola Nani Ranch in Pahoa. It had just opened. We were able to interact with alpacas, goats, sheep, and trail ride on their beautiful horses. The tour was also very informative about Hawaiian agriculture. After a full day we always looked forward to returning to Popa'a. So quiet and relaxing. All of our evenings were spent on the spacious lanai. The house is very roomy and we loved it. The beds were very comfortable too. We will be back!

Such a great house - so easy and comfortable!

Two bedrooms and a full bathroom are on the ground level then the kitchen, open living room and third bedroom are upstairs. This made our family vacation SO comfortable - the old folks and little kids slept downstairs while the teen was able to stay up late, watch TV in the living room, and sleep upstairs without disturbing us. The upstairs lanai is right off the kitchen so we all ate breakfast outside admiring the lovely yard FULL of palm trees. There are so many birds here, we really felt the tropics. We planned lots of activities from this location. Expect to drive every day. Coming 'home' to Popaa Palms was so comforting and relaxing. We will definitely stay here again!

Relaxing vacation stay near the ocean!

The neighborhood was quiet and perfect for walking. The views along the cliffs and oceanfront drive were amazing. We loved sitting on the lanai in the evening with the cool breeze listening to the waves. The property was very open and spacious, clean, and well stocked. We used the grill on the lanai several nights. There are chairs and coolers in the garage which were handy for going to the parks and beach. We went to Hilo many times and it was an easy 25-30 minute drive. We visited the farmers markets, Waimea, the lava beds, many beaches and parks, and other sites. A grocery market, restaurants, and shops are only 10 minutes away in Pahoa, which were handy, and we also stocked up on groceries in Hilo. We will definitely be back!
