Epic Mountaintop Jungle Casita Adventure

"Refugio" is a one-of-a-kind off-grid mountain hideaway! Rejuvenate in mild temperatures (ave. 72) during an unforgettable stay, including miles of private groomed hiking trails with 360 views; comfy beds; locally sourced coffee; a'la carte healing and relaxation treatments in our new open-air spa; seasonal exotic fruits & veggies, and spring water. The Epic Mountain Jungle Casita, dubbed "the coffee house," is a historic coffee processing mill located near the top of a mountain on an old coffee plantation, with expansive views, fresh air, blue skies, pure mountain spring water, and an assortment of in-season tropical fruits. It has been completely renovated and turned into a comfortable, tranquil space. The property encompasses 40 acres but is surrounded by hundreds of acres of pristine jungle and mountain ridges along with miles of hiking trails with some of the most scenic views in all of Puerto Rico.

In the fall of 2024, we completed a new covered rooftop terrace for additional relaxation space and nature watching enjoyment, as well even more opportunities to take in panoramic views of the valley (and ocean) below, and our epic sunsets. The terrace includes a small dinette, a hammock, and a place to lounge, all tucked behind a privacy screen.

The Casita has a window fan (average temps are about 72 and pleasant year around), and features a queen bed, a private bathroom with a window looking off a lovely jungle valley, a small desk, and a small kitchenette with everything you need to cook full meals: a microwave, induction burner, toaster oven, instant pot, air fryer, blender, and an apartment-sized refrigerator.

The Casita is surrounded by herb gardens and banana trees, along with many opportunities to commune in nature on designated chairs and benches scattered throughout the property.

Be sure to utilize our luxurious relaxation and healing services in our new open-air spa overlooking a jungle ravine. Per guest comments, we recommend at least a 3-night stay to be able to fully enjoy all that this special property has to offer. Note: The Coffee House is located in very close proximity to a larger Cottage that is also rented, but still offers plenty of privacy in your outdoor rooftop terrace. There may be other guests during your visit depending on whether the other unit is booked. And the hosts will also be sharing some of the same outdoor spaces and occasionally walking by your rental unit . If you are looking for absolute privacy with no hosts or staff on hand, please consider booking a different location.

Enjoy access to any outdoor spaces including patios and gardens, nature trails, and about 5 miles in hiking trails that are only for use by property guests.

Our property is remote and ideally suited to guests who are looking to unplug, commune with nature, find spiritual and emotional healing (inquire about our many therapeutic services), and/or guests who also want to explore some of the nearby attractions, like the well-known Canyon Blanco, or Tanama River. There’s also the option of booking one of our guided experiences to a special off-the-beaten-path adventure. Our property includes several miles of epic self-guided hiking trails. In order to take full advantage of our property and surrounding attractions, we encourage guests to book 3 nights or more when possible.

The town of Utuado is about 30 minutes away by car on a narrow, winding road and we are located at the end of a steep 1/2 mile dirt road. We will meet you at the start of our neighborhood and then we will transport you from a parking location near the start of our property to the house if you do not have AWD/4WD. When renting a car, it's helpful to at least have a car with front wheel drive. Once you are here though, you'll literally feel like you are in paradise!

We are located about an hour and 45 minutes from either the San Juan airport or the Aguadilla airport and we are about one hour driving distance both Arecibo and Poncé. We can arrange airport transfers for a fee, either from the airport or to your next destination on the island.
