Sunset House is a modern, newer-construction home located in the heart of Empire, Michigan, the jewel of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Aptly named for its striking red exterior, this bright and spacious retreat offers comfort, privacy, and an unbeatable location.

The home is within walking distance of Empire Beach and the Empire Bluffs Trailhead, just minutes by bike to the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, and a short drive to regional favorites such as the Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Drive, Glen Lake, and the pristine Crystal River.

Inside, enjoy an open floor plan with soaring 20-foot ceilings and abundant natural light that create an airy, welcoming space. The home comfortably sleeps up to 6 guests with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, including a main-level primary suite with a private en-suite bath.

We loved our stay in Empire! The home was beautifully decorated, very clean and so well organized. We loved all the thoughtful touches and special items from the hostess. She put a lot of thought into making everything comfortable and welcoming. We would certainly stay again.

I can't say enough good things about our stay in Empire, Michigan. The place was absolutely gorgeous and perfect for our family! It was so close to the beach, beautifully decorated with such a welcoming feeling, and had EVERYTHING we needed. It was incredibly clean and the perfect size for our family of 4. The host, Bonnie, was SO WONDERFUL, so kind, so caring, so easy to communicate with and quick to respond, and she tried to accommodate all of our needs as best as possible. Out of all the places we've ever stayed, this was our very best experience. We'll be back again for sure. THANK YOU BONNIE :)

"Finding a rental that completely exceeds your expectations from the moment you walk in is a rare treat. The check-in instructions were crystal clear, the kitchen was stocked with actual high-quality tools, and the beds offered an incredible night's sleep. It was the perfect, stress-free setup for our family. On top of that, the location is unbeatable—we could easily walk to every single place we wanted to go. This stay raised the bar for what a vacation rental should be, and we cannot wait to come back."

Bonnie's home was the perfect house for our 6 person family week in Empire. Exceptionally clean and beautifully decorated. My parents who have some balance and walking issues were able to easily navigate the first floor and they loved the first floor bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen was perfect for our needs. We all laid in the giant back yard one night and star watched under empires dark skies! Bonnie's excellent communication and attention to detail was the final finishing touch. We plan on making this our annual family destination.Thank you and see you soon!

This is one of the nicest properties we've stayed in via VRBO. It is pretty much new, and is exceptionally clean and well designed. Our host, Bonnie was very communicative and helpful, and has set up the home for guests in a thoughtful way. It's a short 5 minute walk to the little downtown of Empire, where there are a number of shops and restaurants worth visiting. Try the Patio at Joe's Friendly Tavern, and the pizza at the Empire Village Inn. It's also just another 5 minutes further to walk on through downtown to the nice beach park right on Lake Michigan, with beautiful views in both directions of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The visitors center for the national park is just a block away from the house and also well worth a visit.Just a bit further but still close by are a wide range of trails through the park, and places like Glen Arbor that are a little bigger but feature more restaurants, shops and things to do when you're not on the water or on the trails. I would definitely come to this area and stay in this house again! Highly recommend!

My daughter Sarah and her husband David and I purchased our Sunset House in September 2025. Sarah and I called Empire home from 1974-1982, where town and beach and woods were one giant playground, both summer and winter. For Sarah, having total freedom to run about the village with complete abandon was magical. Although we have both lived many places, including Germany, returning to the one place we know as "home" has been a deep desire we've shared for many years. Our hearts are forever rooted here! While Sarah and David currently reside in northern California and are wending their way toward retirement, I will be your local host.

A BIT MORE ABOUT ME
Growing up in the Detroit suburbs, I summered on Glen Lake throughout my childhood, setting the course of my life. I've spent many years exploring Leelanau County's endless wonders. There is so much to love about the area, from sandy beaches, miles of bike and hiking trails, to kayaking the pristine Crystal River. The possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts are endless.

In addition to staying active I am passionate about art and spend much of my time in front of an easel, both in the studio and outdoors (en plein air), working in pastels. Wonderful friends, good books, local volunteer-run theaters, the many outdoor music venues, and living environmentally conscious round out life in this blue water paradise.

Moving to my summer home on Glen Lake which I purchased in 2007 allows me to share my winter home with guests and I sincerely hope you find it to be a comfortable, warm and inviting place to regroup after enjoying fun and adventure filled days in this magnificent wonderland.

This newly established neighborhood is just a 10-minute walk from the beach, 5-minute bike ride to the 22-mile Heritage Trail, minutes from spectacular Empire Bluffs trailhead and walkable to the many shops and restaurants scattered around Empire. Additionally, this is a friendly, community-driven neighborhood. The people are wonderful!

The towering ceiling and many windows, both high and low, let in the beauty of each day.

KITCHEN AMENITIES
Since I live in the house for half the year, it is fully stocked with plenty of dishes, pots and pans, quality knives, crock pot, Vitamix blender, salad spinner...things you may not find in every rental.

ORIGINAL ART
Many of my original paintings adorn the walls as well as works created by family members. Details about each piece can be found in the House Manual.

PRIVACY
The large fenced backyard offers total privacy, lots of room for play, and exquisite sunsets.

ANTIQUES
Spending six years in Germany in the 1990s provided an excellent opportunity to purchase a few distinct antiques. These pieces add a unique charm to the Sunset House. For more details please refer to the House Manual.
