The Lower Saxony Wadden Sea, which enjoys special protection as a national park and biosphere reserve and also serves as a recreational area for vacationers, is the area with the highest bird diversity in Europe and Germany’s most significant natural habitat. It has been an UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2009. It is considered a “refueling station” for millions of migratory birds and is home to many breeding birds as well as a wintering ground for numerous bird species. It is also the habitat of harbor seals and gray seals, which give birth to their pups here. The numerous sights and attractions in and around the national park offer plenty of variety! Mudflat hike: Experience the slow pace of life up close on the seafloor—a mudflat hike is an absolute highlight of any North Sea vacation and truly one-of-a-kind. Where else can you walk barefoot and dry through the sea, sometimes all the way to the offshore islands? Another special maritime experience is a crab boat tour. The motto here is: Join in and give it a try! You can experience pure relaxation and a sense of your body in the Ocean Wave water park—just a few minutes away—in real seawater. Here, you can feel the lightness of your body in the salty water, enjoy the sauna, or splash around in the wave pool. You can experience the diversity of the North Sea habitat firsthand at the seal rehabilitation center. Here, orphaned seals—known as “whalers”—are raised until they can be returned to the North Sea and survive on their own. You can learn about how these animals live and discover everything there is to know about the Wadden Sea habitat through numerous exhibits and events. A highlight—and especially popular with children—are the feedings, which take place twice a day.
