This review is in two parts. One review is for the island and the other for the house. I have been to coastal Maine and its islands many many times but I have never been to this area. Once you are there you would never know you are that close to the mainland/civilization.
If you have never been to Chebeague, you are in for a treat. If you are looking for an action packed vacation that includes an active night life etc. this may not be the place for you. But if you are looking to disconnect and reconnect with yourself, family or nature then this IS the place for you. Chebeague is the way life used to be, offering you a relaxed environment that is hard to come by in this day and age of technology. It is an amazing healing place. This was a solo vacation for me. I chose this island because I felt that if I felt too secluded I was close enough to Portland that I could be in the thick of it if I needed to be around people. I never even thought of leaving. As a solo female traveler I felt more than safe at all times.
The Little Red House (LRH) is the quintessential Maine island summer cottage. I kayaked over from the mainland, pulled up on the beach and walked my things across the street to a little slice of heaven. The LRH is comfortable and cozy. There were several recent renovations done to the house which made it even nicer. It is clear this is a treasured home. All meals including morning coffee and afternoon cocktails are meant to be experienced on the screened-in porch overlooking the harbor. It is stocked with most everything you will need. Minus a few tools, that I was able to improvise, I even made Maine Blueberry Jam.
Everyone I encountered was beyond nice and helpful. The owner Luke is great to deal with, he made my experience even better. Gail the island host was beyond helpful. I highly recommend the LRH, I can't wait to visit again next summer.
And last but not least, the outdoor shower. Need I say more!!
Cheers,
M
