About the host
Hosted by Owner / Manager
In 2002 we moved from Copenhagen in Denmark, where we both grew up, to Montegiove to take over the daily management of the family estate “Castello di Montegiove”. We have never regretted this decision, even though the first years in Montegiove were not at all like a fairytale. The castle had to be completely restored; the roofs all had big holes so we spent all rainy days running around with pots and pans to pick up the water. Today the castle has been through a thorough and respectful renovation. Lorenzo: I spent almost all my childhood summers together with my grandfather in Montegiove, following daily life at the estate and in the wine cellar. I still recall adventuring round in the castle and walks in the splendid and unspoiled nature around Montegiove. I always hoped, that one day, I could take care of the estate, and that happened after years of study at the “Royal Veterinarian and Agricultural University” and the “University of Aberdeen” ending up with a Ph.D. and a short carrier as scientist and assistant professor, before moving to Italy. Rikke: I worked with pattern making and designs in the fashion industry before moving to Italy. My big passion is decorating and putting things in order so moving to a place like this where everything needed a loving hand has been a fantastic challenge for me. Today I am the practical person in the household making all ends meet for our busy modern family. We still feel so lucky waking up in the morning and looking out at the beautiful valley, and we are never getting tired of the absolute silence and peace that is so rare to find in the modern world of today. Sometimes the clouds are hanging lower than Montegiove and it feels like we are on an island in the middle of the sea.
Why they chose this property
Lorenzo and his sister inherited the property from their grandfather Paolo. The castle has been in the Misciattelli family since 1780.
What makes this property unique
Montegiove is a small luxury hideaway – making it the ideal property for a complete buy out! Rent all the houses, it is a dream getaway for a family reunion, a corporate retreat or a relaxed escape for a group of friends.
The castle of Montegiove has existed since the early 12th century and has for the last four centuries been the property of the Marchesi Misciattelli. Today, still family-owned, it is the centre of an estate covering nearly 1200 hectares of beautiful Umbrian countryside, where oak forests, vineyards, olive fields and arable land blend in total harmony with ancient dry walls and farmhouses built of local stone. The principal products of the estate are wine, olive oil, cereals, beef cattle, oil seeds, forage and forest products. There is abundant wildlife such as wildboar and deer, and the local flora include truffles and mushrooms. At the surrounding land you will find marked trekking footpaths of various lengths. The beautiful surroundings and unspoiled environment make it hard to believe that Montegiove is only 17 km from Italy’s main motorway A1 (Milan – Naples), which also connects Rome and Florence.
Other Activities: Shopping, Wildlife Viewing, Wine production, Wine tasting
