Town: Whitehaven, in West Cumbria, is nestled between the glistening sea and the rugged Lakeland Fells. In addition to its nearly 250 Georgian-style Listed Buildings, the town is also home to some lovely parks and gardens. The harbour is now a protected area, and the town's rich history can be explored at the superb Beacon Heritage Centre. There is a lot to see and do along the coast, from historic smuggling villages like Ravenglass to the picturesque red sandstone cliffs of St. Bees, which serve as the starting point of Wainwright's renowned "Coast to Coast" Hike. Western lakes such as Ennerdale, Loweswater, Crummock, Buttermere, and Wastwater offer peace and quiet further inland. With no public roads along its National Trust-owned shoreline, Ennerdale is among the quietest of the lakes.
