Lake Odessa has been a vacation destination since the 1800's. The activities and attractions of centuries past haven't changed, with a few new ones added to the mix. Your group will find recreation, refuge, and fun; in a friendly small town atmosphere.

Use the included paddleboat, 2 stand up paddleboards, and/or 2 kayaks to explore the waters. Kayaks can usually make it through a canal to Tupper Lake, a smaller fishing lake nearby, that has even more shoreline and canals to explore.

There are 2 local companies for pontoon boat rental. Between them, they have several boats, and likely can accommodate your rental needs. Boats can be booked ahead of time to ensure availability if desired, and prices range around 300-450 per day. Ask your host for details.

Word has it that this is the only property on the lake which boasts a deck that actually extends over the water. And this one-of-a-kind, grandfathered-in, infinity style deck sprawls out to fill the entire backyard.

The public Beach (just steps away) features a sandy lakefront that gently slopes down to the water. A large floating dock has benches for lounging, spots for fishing, and is fun to walk on. The area contained by the floating docks provides a no-boat swimming experience for all ages. The Beach volleyball court is open in the summer to the public for impromptu games (volleyball available for you to use). Enjoy snacks from the Dairy Queen next door at the picnic tables on the Beach.

The Cottage has heat and air conditioning throughout, as well as plenty of windows with screens to open if desired. The flat screen television has Roku, from which you can access our complimentary Netflix account for TV, music, and movies.

The Beach Cottage is a place to relax, re-group and re-connect. Stay in and play games, soak in the lakeside hot tub, and watch Netflix together. Or go boating, fishing, and swimming; then roast s'mores by the campfire. Saunter next door for some bowling, or a fantastic meal at Buddy's on the Beach. Take a short walk downtown for some antique shopping, followed by a treat at the ice cream shop. Hang out at the park with huge wooden playground on the way back.

Just 15 minutes to the north is Ionia State Recreation Area, a huge 4,500 acre playground for outdoor enthusiasts of nearly any persuasion. There's a river and lake; hiking, mountain biking, dog and horse trails; awesome bird watching; wildflowers galore; and come winter, fantastic sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The Grand River Valley trail runs right through it. It's like being up north in the UP, without the long road trip. And just five minutes east from there is the city of Ionia, offering chain restaurants and big box stores.

The dock is in the water April 1-Nov 1.

All parking is free of charge and steps away from the front door of the Beach Cottage. From April 1 to October 31, parking is allowed 24/7 on the street in front of the house. From November 1 to March 30, overnight parking is available in a public lot directly across the street, shared by the Beach, and is about a 30 second walk from the front door.

Your host (Jason) is a second generation Lake Odessa Cottage rental owner, and started doing Cottage cleanings between guests when he was in elementary school as Mom's sidekick. Jason now lives just down the street from the Beach Cottage with his wife and daughter, and can help provide you with the information you need to enjoy the local destinations, attractions, events, and off the beaten path walking and biking routes.

Great lakefront cottage
We had an excellent stay here- the description and photos are accurate and the overall process went really smoothly. I wish it was a little warmer so we could have enjoyed the water more, but we will definitely consider staying here again during the summer!

I can’t say enough great things about this cottage
A group of 4 adults, 2 toddlers and 2 dogs stayed at this beach cottage. The host was amazing. He really thinks of it all. The little details were appreciated and well thought out. The cottage has everything you need. Weather wasn’t the best but the hot tub and view made up for it. Shower was great. Beds were comfortable. Loved having fans and sound machines. Location is perfect. Close to so many things. Buddy’s was great to have next door. Food was good. The downtown was cute. Loved the bakery (best donuts ever), Terry’s, the library, parks, the list goes on. It’s so comforting coming into a clean cottage. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. Would definitely come back in the future.

They Thought of Everything
The pictures don't do it justice. We were very impressed. All the little touches were great. We really appreciated the maple syrup on the table when we walked in. Loved the house and all the comfy-ness of it! We needed some R & R and we got it. Loved the suggestions on the chalkboard of where to shop and where to eat. Lovely town, good shopping and good restaurants. Thank you for a great stay!

Lake house
This house worked perfectly for my family. My mom is elderly and had no issues navigating through the house. The outside area is set up to perfection with cute little conversation areas. The owner had nice touches throughout the house to make it feel welcoming. We will be staying again for sure!!

About the host

Hosted by Jason Kopen

Host profile image
Your hosts Jason and Carmen are the proud parents of Winnie, a rambunctious 5 year old that enjoys exploring all that Lake Odessa has to offer. We used to live on Tupper Lake (20 years ago) nearby, but now live right in town Lake Odessa, to better take advantage of the great location and activities. We take great pride in offering a fantastic lakefront getaway during all times of the year, and love being able to do that just down the street from our family home. This allows us to take excellent care of the Beach Cottage and the guests, and do so more conveniently.
We enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities, and having lived in Colorado for the past 2 decades, we especially love all the lake activities available here. From boating to lakeside campfires and hot tubs, to the beach and bicycling, there is just so much to do!
When not hosting or maintaining the Beach Cottage, Jason runs Lake Odessa Handyman, a local service company that does, well, handyman work. Jason replaced the entire Cottage roof with the current metal roof (with the help of cousin Jim), and has done many of the other upgrades you see in the Cottage, including exposing and then polishing the concrete floor in the kitchen on his hands and knees.

Why they chose this property

I had always loved that week in Lake Odessa as a child. That time during the summer that we would look forward to for months. We would plan for weeks, and pack for days. It was less than a half an hour drive to Lake O, but it felt like another world to me there. Time slowed down, and everyone seemed to be all about summer fun. My special request every year was to be there when the fair was in town. We could ride our bikes from The Cottage to the fairgrounds, and stop by the gas station on the way for candy and soda.
A trip to the ice cream shop, a quick stop downtown at the dime store, and swimming in the lake were all fun, but the fishing... the fishing was the best part!
And then the evening campfire with stories about the day, plans for the next, and flaming marshmallows on sticks. The smell of bug spray and suntan lotion, and then the kids up to the loft and the parents downstairs to sleep with the windows open and the sound of the crickets, while seeing flashing lightning bugs out the window as you drifted off to sleep.
And Lake Odessa today is pretty much the same experience. Only what I didn't know as a child, is that spring, winter, and fall offer awesome fun as well! Whether it be pickleball, bicycling, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, or skiing, there are numerous options for enjoying the outdoors year round. And when venturing out is just not your thing, taking a dip in the lakeside hot tub, or stepping next door for a dinner and perhaps bowling offer entertainment without going too far.

What makes this property unique

Originally built in 1948, this property used to be part of a church campground, and was a small cabin at the time. It was traded to the previous owner's family in exchange for paying off a debt for the church. That family owned it and added on to it for the next 70 years or so, until we purchased it from them in 2018. We have been consistently upgrading the property ever since.
