Condo, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5)
- english, spanish
Hi from John and Annie. We are happily retired* in Bishop, California, after thirty plus years living on Donner Summit, in the mountains above Lake Tahoe, enjoying the skiing, hiking, climbing and coping with massive amounts of snow. Bishop is on the eastern side of the Sierras and is a playground for athletes. We moved here to rock climb year round and to get away from the snow. We love spending August in the condo and enjoying our Half Moon Bay. We are in or on the bay for most of every day. *John was a ski school director and climbing instructor. Annie was a teacher, mainly in kindergarten.
Annie purchased this Condo in 2005
Why Annie chose Akumal
One morning in early Jan. 2005, after it had been snowing for a week and road closures were eminent, I decided I needed to get somewhere warm and welcoming. I had a photo of a condo on Half Moon Bay up on the 'frig that a friend had given to us at a Christmas party. After staring longingly at the photo, I started looking for a place to stay on HMB, not having any idea it was high season. Of course, nothing was available. One wonderful travel agent told me she had found a hotel room for us but told me to see if I could find a flight first. Oh, my. By the time I secured the flight and confirmed the hotel room, it was about 2:30 in the afternoon. We ran around throwing things in a couple of suitcases, jumped in the car and made the 3 1/2 hour drive up to Reno with white knuckles. Cars were spinning out all around us. We spent that night in Reno and flew out the next morning. We had our feet in the sand that afternoon. It was love at first sight! Half Moon Bay is an absolutely magical place. One day we wandered into the realtor's just to check out prices. When Tony asked if he could show us some properties, we thought it would be fun to look around. One of the properties was Playa Caribe #5. We fell under the spell of that fabulous view of Half Moon Bay from every room in the condo. We love to share our place with family and friends. It is our hope that our visitors will want to return often and think of it as their private get away.
What makes this Condo unique
There seems to be two types of visitors to Half Moon Bay. Some fill every minute of every day with a new adventure: cenotes, diving, driving around, shopping, restaurants, cultural events, ruins, etc. Believe me, there is no end to all one can find to do in this area. We fit in with 'the others' who just love to hang out at Half Moon Bay. We bring about a million books and, when we aren't in the water snorkeling, swimming or SUPing, we have our noses pressed to the pages. The diving is wonderful, but we just can't get enough of the snorkeling. I should add that another bonus to staying at Playa Caribe is meeting some of the very interesting people who stay there often.

We had a wonderful time here! The condo was prefect for our family and exceeded our expectations!!
We will definitely be back! We had a fantastic time relaxing and snorkeling right in front of the condo. The beach is beautiful. Pictures don't do it justice. The property manager is amazing... he was able to organize a fishing boat and day tour of the ruins/ cenotes for us that fit exactly what we were looking for. It was easy to get around, we walked and rented bikes. There are a few great restaurants within walking distance but the kitchen is well stocked so it was nice to be able to cook in the condo.
We are looking forward to our next trip!!
We had an amazing time. I’m the type that doesn’t enjoy being surrounded by a million people on vacation. It really felt like we had the whole Bay to ourselves.
Everyday we went on an adventure and explored a new town or a beautiful Cenote. I loved sitting on the deck and watching the waves.
Only thing that Could have been better was the seaweed, which is a natural phenomenon. Even that wasn’t too bad if you wanted to get in the water you just had to walk down the beach a bit.
Great stay great host.
Thank you for pointing out that snorkelers can always find a way to enjoy the reef in Half Moon Bay. Plus, as you said, there are so many cool places to visit and explore that are near the condo. I am happy to hear your relaxing get-away was a success. We hope you will stay with us again.
Great condo, but really bad seaweed problem now all along the coast...
I had stayed in this condo in 2014 and had a wonderful time, so decided to go back last week (3/2 - 3/9). The condo is located on the 2nd floor of the Playa Caribe building, is very nice, always clean, with great places to eat nearby. When we arrived on Saturday we were shocked to see (and smell) all of the seaweed that was rolling into the bay and piling up along the shore. I guess this is a relatively new problem, not just in Half Moon bay but all over. I feel bad having to write this review because Annie has always been great to work with, and since she owns this condo it will no doubt cause her some problems. The staff worked all day, each day, trying to keep up with it which was quite a job. We drove down to the beach at Tulum, which is one of our all time favorite places to swim in the beautiful blue surf, and they were having the same problem, so we turned around and came back. We did use the pool, and also went down the road to the lagoon to snorkel, which was excellent! Lots of fish and no seaweed there, but lots of groups of people being hauled in by van and buses. If you are looking for a relaxing time, eating good food, and don't care about the seaweed, it's a great condo. I would just suggest you check on conditions...
I am sorry the seaweed rolled in for your stay in March. As you know, I was shocked to see your photos because our February guests mentioned seaweed, but they weren't bothered by it. I have added to my VRBO page for this month that future guests should inquire about conditions until I get a photo from our manager showing the problem has been taken care of. Thanks for keeping me informed!
Relaxing and wonderful vacation
We had a wonderful time at Annie's. The location of the condo couldn't have been more perfect - an easy walk to 'town' but even easier to both La Lunita and La Buena Vida restaurants. Half Moon Bay was affected by sargassum but that's Mother Nature and there was always a clear path somewhere along the way to get in the water and swim. And workers were constantly cleaning up the beach. The staff at Playa Caribe are top notch. Agustin even set up for us to have in-room massages on the last night of our stay! We look forward to our next trip to Annie's!!
I am happy the weather must have cleared for you. Thank you for mentioning there is always a way to get into the water and out to the reef even if there is sargassum. Wow! Massages right in the condo. Bliss!
This was my husband and my first time NOT staying in an all inclusive. Our best friends who shared Annie’s condo with us had never done either or even been to Mexico. It was also my first time doing a VRBO. From the second I booked it i received my first email from Annie. Every possible question I had was already answered in this first email which completely set me at ease.
Now the condo itself. No other word other than perfect. PERFECT. Four adults in our 50’s, we spent most of our time on the deck, snorkeling in halfmoon bay or swimming in the pool. Tulum was stupid busy.....back to the condo. Yal Ku Lagoon was stupid busy.....back to the condo. It literally had EVERYTHING you needed. And a perfect location.
Thank you Annie for an incredible holiday
There is something about Half Moon Bay that is so relaxing. I have spent so much time on the deck myself with a good book in hand. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we appreciate your review!
Loved the traditional style of the place. Of course, the view is fantastic and you not only have a view forward on the patio but the sides are open also for additional view. Spent alot of time on that patio! As noted on the listing, the WiFi was perfect and the air conditioning was perfect and comfortable. Hot water was endless. Kitchen was fully stocked. Akumal is more of a low key area versus Playa de Carmen and Cancun. Went down to Tulum one day and that is getting so busy, I was so glad to get back to Akumal and Annie's place that day to relax again. Great place! Thank you Annie.
I know what you mean about sitting out on the patio. The patio is so close to the water that it almost feels like you are in it! We enjoy the relaxing sounds of the waves, watching the pelicans and frigate birds, spotting fish at the surface, and so much more.
Thanks for mentioning the hot water and other standard amenities. Come visit us again!
The snorkeling and diving are fabulous! We are in the perfect spot for easy access to Mayan ruins, EcoParks and many other adventures
