About the host

The lodge is owned by two families who are all marine biologists by profession. The lodge is operated by Russell Markel (PhD) and Scott Wallace (PhD) who have both conducted research and education from Bamfield for over 20 years.

The lodge itself was once an outpost for the US-based School for Field Studies and both Russell and Scott worked for the school between 1998-2003. Fast forward 20 years and our lives have come full circle to becoming the new owners of the lodge.

Why they chose this property

The setting is magical and only an in-person visit can truly convey what it offers. The lodge faces the wild west coast but has easy access to a protected harbour to comfortably shuttle guests and launch excursions to view the amazing wildlife of Pacific Rim National Park and Barkley Sound. While perched on the wild west coast and adjacent to incredible wilderness, the lodge itself is in a quaint historic boardwalk town allowing for basic amenities and a sense of community. Although the town has only ~250 residents, it is home to Canada's renowned Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, which itself speaks to the diversity of marine life at our doorstep.

The lodge itself was built in the 1950s and the original builder, Bruce Scott, has been credited for the establishment of Pacific Rim National Park. The property truly inspires people to enjoy and appreciate the interconnectedness and beauty of nature.

What makes this property unique

Although very remote, the lodge has several elements that make it accessible and safe. The lodge is only a few hundred meters from a central coast guard station. Near to the lodge is a modern health centre with urgent care medical professionals available.
