Forget your usual urban green spaces with crooked benches and packs of pigeons, Rennes has the grand and gorgeous Thabor. This 24-acre swathe of lawns and manicured flower beds was once the grounds of a medieval Benedictine abbey. A total redevelopment in the 1800s brought ferns and orchids and exotic blooms aplenty, not to mention picnic spots, bandstands, fountains and artificial caves. When the sun shines, it's one of the most pleasant places to be, offering a real escape from the heart of the city.
Bag yourself a Rennes holiday rental in the historic heart of this provincial capital and get ready to get lost. Wandering the streets with wide eyes and a guidebook can be the best way to discover all the architectural gems that lurk above the pavements and in the squares. There are loads, from the half-timbered medieval terraced houses of the Place du Champ-Jacquet to the grand parliament buildings of the Bretons. The endless menu of creperies and cider holes and local taverns touting garlic snails won't let you go hungry as you walk, don't worry.
Sunny and dry days are less common up in northern Brittany than they are down on the French Riviera. Still, the summers in Rennes manage to crank up temperatures to the mid-20s and bring plenty of days without a drop of rain. You can book your Rennes holiday rentals for between June and August, if you want to make the most of those. That said, Rennes isn't just for the warmer months. Autumns, winters and springs are great, too. Students add vibrancy to the local bars from October to March. And there are fewer crowds in the museums and parks.
Rennes's ancient heart is cut into little sections by the meanderings of the Ille and the Vilaine rivers. As they flow outwards and into the green belt that surrounds the city, they delve into landscapes of rolling hills and wooded plains, often occupied by farm fields and grazing packs of cows and sheep – typical of central Brittany. You don't actually have to leave town to get a taste of nature, though. The large Thabor Park can cover that, with its exotic flower beds and 2,000 species of roses.
