About this property

Romantic, quirky, unique cottage, big garden, free parking, pet friendly max 2

The Tree House Cumbria is a characterful, beautifully furbished 170-year-old cottage with internal arboreal architecture. Our cottage offers all the traditional comforts, plus modern smart home technology, located within easy reach of England's highest peak, Scafell Pike, scenic lakes, quiet, beaches and spectacular coastline.
Set in the pretty farming village of Beckermet in the Western Lakes,  the pet-friendly cottage is within two minutes' walk of a friendly village pub, The Royal Oak and a few minutes' drive from a plethora of traditional pubs offering real ales, roaring fires, casual/fine dining restaurants, shops and sight-seeing attractions and experiences. For cyclists, the vicinity boasts a wealth of cycle routes including the West Cumbria Cycle Network. The location also offers great opportunities for bird-watching as the Heritage Coast, within four miles, supports the largest seabird colony on the west coast of England .
Nearby are some of the most spellbinding areas of the Lake District, less frequented by tourists but revered by climbers and connoisseurs of the Lakes. All the highest peaks including Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Pillar can be accessed from Wastwater which is a 20 minute drive from the cottage, whilst the quiet shores of Ennerdale and Loweswater offer tranquil views and scenic walks. For very different landscape, the unspoilt Cumbrian coast is just three miles away with its dramatic sandstone cliffs at St Bees Head, its spacious and quiet beaches, cliff-top walks, and historic towns including the Georgian 'gem' town of Whitehaven and historic Egremont, whilst the 'hotspots' of Keswick and Cockermouth are within easy reach.
The cottage is more of a tree in a house than a house in a tree (we're not sure how it got there! ). This spectacular natural 'sculpture' provides the focal point of the living room and is wrapped by a wooden spiral staircase which leads to the master bedroom.
Inside accommodation comprises a romantic spacious double bedroom with cathedral-style, vaulted ceiling and comfortable seating areas with views over the garden. Downstairs there's a small, well-equipped bedroom with full-size bunk beds. The cottage will comfortably sleep four but there's also a luxurious sofa bed so there's a potential to sleep six (as long as you're good friends!). We also have a baby travel cot which can be used if requested. Total area is 80 sq. mtrs
A rustic open plan kitchen with live edge worksurfaces and island hob means the cook (if there is one), can be part of the party whilst preparing dinner. The living room is cosy with a comfortable sofa; a log burning stove set in a traditional fireplace, Laura Ashley soft furnishings, dresser add to the country feel. Leading from the living room is an attractive conservatory dining area which seats up to six people, looking out over the patio where you can sit out in summer (or winter), cook up a barbeque or pizza or simply relax on the comfy garden chairs.
The long, country garden on several levels provides many places for retreat and relaxation: by the large pond spotting dragonflies, or sitting by the mysterious 'standing stones' , simply lounging in the hammock or you can walk past the bamboo to the end of the garden which looks out over peaceful pastureland.
The Tree House is packed with traditional features, but also boasts the most up-to-date technology with a Samsung Frame TV including free Amazon Prime Video and a Smart TV in the main bedroom, a Blue-Tooth speaker to which you can link your device, superfast fibre broadband and Amazon Prime unlimited music played through Amazon Echo. The cottage is a fully integrated Smart Home, however if Alexa and technology are not your cup of tea, there's also the more traditional way to operate lights with switches.
Bedding is provided for up to 6 guests but please bring your own bedding for the travel cot and the extra fold away bed which is standard single size.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
At the rear of the property there is right of way to the back gardens of the two houses next door, it's only used very occasionally and is fully gated but if you let your pet run free in our garden you should be aware of this.
We only allow a maximum of two dogs, because of previous bad experiences we're sorry but if you turn up with more than two you won't be able to stay.

Brilliant stay!
Fantastic little cottage....very quirky just like the description. Really enjoyed our stay. It's in a great location for the Western lakes and we enjoyed some great walks. The dogs loved swimming in Wastwater. Fantastic communication from the hosts and cottage is very well equipped. Shame the local pub wasn't doing food (waiting for a new chef to start) but enjoyed sitting out in the sunshine with a nice beer! Will definitely be staying again.

About the host

For many years (too many to mention here!) Zoe and I have always loved holidays in the Lake District, especially the less crowded Western lakes with its rugged mountains, tranquil lakes and spectacular coastline. At first we came as a couple, then over a few short years we were joined by our four children. Many years later they still love returning.

Why they chose this property

Recently we started looking for a place which we could eventually retire to but which our family could enjoy in the meantime, when we saw this cottage in 2018 we fell in love with it and, with Zoe's imagination, transformed it into a great place where the two of us or all six could stay.
We love the setting: Beckermet is a traditional Cumbrian farming village with an excellent pub/restaurant, the neighbours are very friendly and all the places we love to visit are nearby.
Although our home is in East Yorkshire, there is something very special about Lake District; always new places to see and discover. We consider ourselves very lucky to have a bolthole there and want others to experience the unique ambience of the Treehouse.
Our neighbour Nicola at number 3 looks after the house so if you need anything during your stay please don't hesitate to ask.

What makes this property unique

On entering the Treehouse, guests are amazed by the unique interior, which is designed around a tall tree that reaches up the stairs from the ground floor to the top of the vaulted roof in the bedroom. Most of the surfaces are in wood to match the tree with rustic handmade kitchen cabinets and this is complemented by high quality, comfortable soft furnishings.
The cottage retains many original features such as cast iron fire places but there are also up-to-date features including a twin oven, modern shower room, and 'smart home' technology.
The main bedroom is stunning with a cathedral-like ceiling, and sandstone revealed fireplace and arch.
We've also added a new conservatory for relaxing or dining which leads onto a large private garden complete with a furnished garden room.
