About this property

Harbour Views Near Cavendish

Welcome to Rita’s French River!

Close to Cavendish yet away from it all, this waterfront vacation charmer is right on the harbour in the heart of French River, one of the most photographed fishing villages in PEI. Minutes from the National Park, two lighthouses and a secluded beach, this historic house has been completely renovated. The bright décor and updated appliances make for a stylish, comfortable stay. But the original fir floors upstairs date from the 1930s.

Three bedrooms all feature luxury linens and stunning views of lobster barns, mussel buoys on the bay and rolling farms. From every room in the house (even sitting in the tub upstairs) you enjoy spectacular harbour views. The master bedroom has a king bed and ensuite half-bath; the other upstairs bedroom (queen bed) sports an amazing glass-railed deck with sleek oiled-wood furnishings. The downstairs bedroom (ensuite, queen bed) looks out over the lobster barns too.

With a well-appointed "cook's kitchen," you’ll appreciate the huge, wrap-around porch (bay views) complete with gas grill, Adirondack chairs and both outside and inside dining for 6. Buy seafood right off the boat at the wharves. After dinner, enjoy the fire pit from yet more Adirondack chairs.

With so much to see from the windows and decks, you may want to curl up with a good book. You’ll find an eclectic library tucked into nooks here and there. Games, TV/DVD and Internet are provided. But the location is ideal for outdoor activities such as biking, kayaking, sailing, swimming, golf, and sightseeing with many close by attractions to visit and explore.

The French River estuary opens onto New London Bay, a popular body of water shared by fisherman, jet skiers, wind surfers and even a parasail operation. Kayaks launch from the wharf across the street.

Yankee Beach, the New London Bay Lighthouse, Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery and Tyron Lighthouse are all just a short walk away. Rita's French River is located along a quiet country road that ends at one of the best beaches on Prince Edward Island, which also overlooks Cavendish Beach. Surrounded by rolling hills, pastoral farm land, and some of the most beautiful photo destinations you'll find on the Island, you're close to hiking, kayaking, deep sea fishing, and eight of the finest golf courses are just minutes away.

You are right on one of the best cycling routes too! The 62km Cabot Loop is a delightful blend of scenery, where you’ll get to experience Island countryside, sea and sky. Your ride begins in your driveway and winds through Park Corner to Cabot Beach Provincial Park and back via Kensington.

Local artwork and hand-crafted furniture is everywhere you look. Tony Diodati's iconic Island imagery graces the walls throughout the house. His gallery is just across the bay. Commissioned from Birdmouse Designs, unique furniture pieces were reclaimed from a cattle barn's feeding trough, a 100+ year old house in Bridgetown, a century old piano and pump organ, an antique tabletop. Lenny and Heather posted a photo essay about this project. Complementing those works are prints in black & white by Sebastião Salgado.

With great beds, a cook's kitchen, books, furniture, artwork and flat screens, this 2-story, 4-season house sleeps six and is just perfect for your PEI getaway!

P.S.: Rita was Portia's grandmother. Read her story under "Owner Info."

Living in the Post Card
When you 'google' Prince Edward Island, or look at an online map, one of the most frequent pictures that pops up, shows beautiful rolling farmland and a small community of houses surrounding a quaint fishing harbor and river inlet. This house is there! We had the privilege of staying in it for 3 weeks this July. It is a large house, with plenty of space for several guests. The kitchen was easily the best supplied of any rental we've ever used. The beds were comfortable, leading to great nights of sleep. The bathrooms are large, the hot water arrives quickly and seems unlimited. There are towels, towels, and more towels. The washer and dryer are top of the line, efficient and fast. Excepting food and clothing, there is really nothing you'd need to bring to make a stay here comfortable. Our favorite place on the property was the wraparound side porch. What a serenity spot!. We ate our breakfast at the table on the porch, gazed at the boats (working and pleasure) out on the water, enjoyed an almost constant breeze, and watched the beautiful sunsets. The owners supply guests with 2 kayaks and 4 bikes. We used the kayaks to explore the area by water and even paddled to a river front restaurant. The bikes are well maintained and were ridden to two lighthouses and a nearby beach. PEI is full of laid-back, friendly people. You are made to feel at home. We enjoyed this house so much, that if it were on the market, we would try to buy it.

The perfect getaway
Beautiful views, comfortable accommodations and a warm community. We left about 3 weeks sooner than I would have liked. Jim & Portia we’re extremely communicative and helpful throughout. Everything you would hope for in a home away from home. Look no further. There’s none better than Rita’s French River.

This is a lovely cottage located in the picturesque French River village. This house comes equip with everything you need for an amazing week in PEI. It is conveniently located near beaches, lighthouses, restaurants and landmarks. Our family of 6 was very comfortable in this 3 bedroom home. The beds we very comfortable and the whole house was extremely clean. We loved getting to use the kayaks and bikes and thoroughly enjoyed our daily strolls to the beach nearby. Jim was a dream host and communication with him was amazing. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone traveling to PEI!

Perfect PEI experience
The house is wonderfully stocked with everything we needed, The hosts were exceptional to deal with. The home has an abundance of screened windows so we only had to use the AC when it rained which was great as the breeze coming off French River should be enjoyed. We made use of the owner’s bikes and explored the Confederation Trail each day. If you’ve always dreamed of exploring PEI, this rental is a great option. Do yourself a favor book this rental and drive over to North Rústico to get some fresh live lobsters at the Doiron fish market and also go to Village Bakery while you are there. We had a fantastic time. We hope to come back some day soon!!

Great Family Getaway
This property was clean and bright and very well equipped. The location was quiet and had a walk along a quiet lane to a little used beach. Jim provided us with many options of things to do and places to visit. We highly recommend this lovely holiday home.

Rita Marie Hebert Bosse was Portia's grandmother. She was born in 1916 and died at the age of 98.

Rita's great grandfather was one of the largest landowners in southwest Louisiana. The Broussard ranch stretched from Spindletop to Port Arthur. The small town of Rayne lies 30 miles west of St. Martinville. You drive through the town of Broussard along the way.

Joseph Broussard (1702–1765) is a hero for Acadians and Cajuns alike. He lead the Acadian people in Acadia; later Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. He organized Mi'kmaq and Acadian militias against the British through King George's War, Father Le Loutre's War and during the French and Indian War. After the loss of Acadia to the British, he led the first group of Acadians to southwest Louisiana.

Imprisoned with other Acadians in Halifax, Broussard was deported by the British in 1764 and was among the first 200 Acadians to arrive in Louisiana on February 27, 1765. He was appointed commander of the "Acadians of the Atakapas" in St. Martinville, where he died the age of 63.

We like to think that Rita brought Louie home to the Maritimes.

Why they chose this property

We found PEI on a cycling tour of the island in 2016. We had a picnic at Tony Diodati's studio, where we boiled mussels taken fresh from this beautiful bay. We were deeply moved by the sight of French River, with its brightly colored lobster barns shining against the rolling pastoral village. By the third day we were dreaming of owning, and on our last day we rented a car and scoured the island in earnest. Imagine our delight when we found this place, sitting prettily in the midst of that amazing vista! We simply can't believe our luck! We're calling it "Rita's French River," in honor of Portia's grandmother, whose bequest to her made this all possible. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

What makes this property unique

We love the look of this ginger-bread house set in this amazing fishing village, but what we love even more is looking at the wharf and the bay from inside the house. Just about every room has bay views -- even from the bathtub! From the windows the bay views and bay breeze are a constant and soothing presence.
