About this property

Unique And Charming Traditional Stone Cottage In Picturesque Surroundings

Turrock Cottage is situated along the Wicklow Way, on the east side of Stookeen Hill, with views over South Wicklow and North Wexford. Eircode is Y14F308.
The cottage is within a farmyard, and close to the main house where we live. We are close to Shillelagh and Tinahely villages, and the cottage is an ideal base for exploring the delights of both Wicklow and Wexford. Avoca, the Ballykissangel village, is just 25kms away while Dublin is 70 kms away. Both the medieval city of Kilkenny and Glendalough are less than an hour’s drive away.
An ancient oak forest, Tomnafinnogue Wood, is a beautiful place to walk, any time of year and the beautiful Altamont Gardens and Huntington Castle are always worth a visit. Horse riding, fishing and the Coolattin Golf Club are all available locally. No visit to Turrock is complete without a visit to the Dying Cow pub where you can relax and look at the views, hear some traditional music being played by local musicians and while away the hours.
For walkers, we are on the Tinahely to Clonegal leg of the Wicklow Way and are close to the Tinahely loop walks which cater for walkers of varying fitness levels.

We are a perfect location for guests attending weddings at Ballybeg House,Lisnavagh House or Mount Wolseley Hotel. We are a 12 minute drive to Ballybeg House and 15 minutes to both Lisnavagh House and the Mount Wolseley.

Our traditional stone cottage sleeps 5 in comfort but can accommodate 6 by request,if 3 sleep in the downstairs bedroom. There is a triple room, a double room and a single bed loft above the wood-burning stove fireplace. The dining area/kitchen is very spacious with a high ceiling allowing plenty of light and is complete with a large Belfast sink and traditional pine dresser. The large dining table seats 6 comfortably on traditional Bentwood chairs, but will squeeze in more if visitors arrive. The table is perfect for hosting long, lazy breakfasts and cosy, evening meals while the stove with its dramatic granite chimney breast heats the radiators throughout the cottage keeping it warm and comfortable. The kitchen is fitted out with dishwasher, fridge, microwave and washing machine. Local carpenters and wood-turners have crafted the many presses, worktops and lamp stands giving the cottage a warm, rustic feel. For wet or winter days, a CD/TV is available as well as a small library with a section of books, DVDS, magazines, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and Scrabble for those who crave excitement! A small sitting room with sofa and doors opening onto a raised stone deck continues on from the kitchen area. Outside furniture is available for those long, hot summer evenings when all you want to do is look at the magnificent views while having a cup of tea or glass of wine. Unfortunately internet is not currently available.

The bedrooms have exposed timber flooring while the kitchen and bathroom have traditional black slate tiles. The wet room/bathroom has a traditional Belfast sink and walk-in electric shower with stones foraged from Wicklow and Wexford beaches that massage your feet while you wash away the stresses of the day.

Sit out on the raised stone deck area and admire the views, listen to the donkeys serenading and the roosters and goat providing the perfect soundtrack to your day. Later in the evening, you may spot deer, see bats leaving their ‘batcave’ for their nightly flight; in early May you may be lucky enough to hear the cuckoo.
Our hens and ducks provide perfect eggs for breakfast when they are laying and our 2 ‘outside’ cats may come looking for attention. Brayden and Alex, our donkeys, are delighted to see new people who might give them the odd carrot. Juno, our dog is very friendly and cannot get enough attention.
Our 4 peacocks are a pleasure to watch especially the males Pluto and Apollo with their amazing display of colour and magnificent tail feathers.

Great place to unplug
This was a great place to unplug. We wish we had more time to be there and in warmer weather when we could have enjoyed the outdoors more than we were able to. The cats did not disappoint!

Beautiful setting quaint cottage and amazing views. All you would want for a relaxing base to tour.
From the minute we arrived Ciaran and Deirdre made us feel totally welcome. The cottage was all we expected and more. It had views which were amazing the animals which were friendly and so much detail had gone into the decor to give it the rustic Irish feel. The area was good for touring but you could quite easy spend a few days here without ever leaving the cottage. The beds were comfortable and the spiral staircase an adventure. The hosts are excellent at what they do and I can't wait to my next visit.

Amazing stay in a beautiful location
We have just come home from a 7 day stay in this beautiful cottage. We haven't got a bad word to say about the place. It was an absolutely beautiful location, very well placed for exploring the south east of Ireland. Even Dublin wasn't a million miles away, easily reachable in an hour and a half. The cottage itself was so lovely. Pictures on this site and others do not do it justice. The interior is beautiful, kitchen and living area is lovely and much more spacious than we expected from the pictures. Upstairs sitting area has beautiful views of the fields and valley. We really enjoyed having the fire on in the evenings also. Everything we needed was there in one shape or form, from washing machine and dishwasher, to wellies that were available to borrow, to kitchen utensils and basic supplies. All of the cats were adorable, (especially Mario, one of the friendliest cats we have ever met!) as were the donkeys who we enjoyed visiting every day and feeding a carrot or two! Ciaran and Dierdre were excellent hosts, very welcoming and more than happy to advise on the area or point in the right direction on things to do. Scones were a lovely touch and we thoroughly enjoyed them on the first day. Thank you so much! Overall a 10/10 stay in a beautiful cottage- we will highly recommend to all our friends and family and will be hopefully returning in the future!

Highly Recommended
We arrived late due to flight times, but were met with a roaring fire and a warm welcome from Ciaran. Milk, eggs and a few other bits were provided and scones arrived the next morning. Amazing views and the signposted walk through the forest and by the stream is a must. Ducks and geese roam free, 2 friendly donkeys and a friendly Hector will munch carrots from your hand all day long. Cats are all friendly, but Mario especially isn't shy to come up for a cuddle, a bowl of milk or even a sleep indoors if you let him - we did! Ciaran couldn't be more helpful, always making sure we had enough wood for the fire and checking everything was ok. A great base to explore from and highly recommended.

Beautiful!
This is my second time staying at the beautiful Turrock Cottage and both times I would say what a lovely, homey and welcoming stay that we had. Both Ciaran and Deirdre are lovely hosts, we found lovely eggs ready for us and yummy homemade scones and jam together with a cosy fire started at the cottage. The cottage is so lovely and cosy you wouldn't want to leave, which is surrounded by beautiful nature and the lovely animals all round. It is just picture perfect. :)

A little gem
When we found this listing we thought it was perfect - it definitely lived up to expectations. Words cannot describe it - you just have to go and try it for yourself! The journey to it is a surprise - be prepared (if you do not like animals - then it's not for you). If you do then you have found a little bit of paradise. Hospitality is 10/10 - including free range eggs and homemade scones My recommendation is to book and book fast Enjoy

Wonderful country cottage in the wilds of Wicklow. Perfectly suited to our family.
We loved this minibreak in Wicklow, for it's tranquil setting and magical views. The children kept whispering "I love this cottage" as the hosts gave us a tour and they suggested we vote it 10 stars. Star scones and farm wildlife greeted us and even in a Wicklow downpour we knew we had found somewhere special. Cosy, charming and warm no matter the weather. Thanks Deidre and Ciaran for sharing your piece of paradise.

Charming and peaceful
Charming, comfortable and quirky cottage with beautiful views in a peaceful, relaxing setting. The animals are all adorable, geese, ducks, chickens, donkeys, cats including Milo who was so cute. Deirdre and Ciaran made us feel so welcome, they are truly the perfect hosts. So kind, caring and generous they tended to our every need. Thankyou to you both for a very special holiday at Turrock Cottage, one that will we always remember. We will definitely be returning.

Peaceful
The cottage was a little hard to find at first but the great directions given by our hosts got us there safely. Deirdre and Ciaran were most welcoming to us and provided fresh laid eggs, homemade scones and plenty of firewood for the fire. The views were stunning and worth the trip alone but the relaxed atmosphere of the cottage is a beautiful place to recharge the internal batteries. The cats, donkeys, geese, ducks and hens all add to the atmosphere. Thsnk you Deidre and Ciaran hosts extraordinaire.

Magical place.
We had an unforgettable two days at Ciaran and Deidre's amazing cottage. The only problem was that I wanted to stay there forever. The cottage is so comfortable with every detail considered...........lovely bed with an electric blanket! (And freshly made scones and jam on arrival!) There is just something quite mesmerising about the place......the donkeys, the cats (especially one little wizard), the chickens and geese, Scooby and then the stunning scenery.....wow. We accidently discovered that Deidre is the most amazing musician and listened to her CD's on repeat......beautiful Irish sounds. This only added to the magic...... If every I'm having a bad day I will dream of this place and imagine I'm back there.

Dream i Autumn
We really liked our stay in this very charming and well maintained cottage. It was just the cottage we wre looking for, very quiered, every question we had were answered at once from Deidress and Keran. IIt was just unfogettable to see in the morning when the fog cleared up to see the beautiful surrounding. And the scones from Deidree were just a dream. I already recommend this cottage to friends.

Wonderful break in idyllic natural setting
We had 10 days in the south east of Ireland by car and we finished our trip with 4 days in Deidre and Ciaran's beautiful cottage. It was a perfect retreat from mundanities of daily urban life. Peaceful and quiet apart from the lovely and varied bird song. We were warmly welcomed with homemade scones and jam. And supplied with as many fresh eggs as we could eat. The cottage was a delight and allowed us to chill out, read books, watch DVDs and drink wine. It was also an excellent base to travel onwards for day trips as we did - Carlow, WExford and Enniscorthy were not far to drive. And lastly Mario the cat was our friend for the stay and charmed us with his presence. Strongly recommended! :)

Beautiful place, lovely hosts
Turrock is such a lovely place to make holiday. It is calm, the cottage has everything you need. When we arrived Deirdre served fresh scones and homemade jam, it was delicious. Deirdre, Ciaran are very lovely hosts, we liked the daily talks. We got lots of helpful advice to explore the surrounding, so we could find places that are not described in the guides. After all it was an amazing week and we nearly were a bit sad to leave. Thanks for the beautiful time we had. Greeting from Germany

AMAZING!!! & beautiful cottage
As a young couple in our 20s, we were very impressed with such a beautiful cottage and amazing surroundings. We were greeted by scones and eggs which we thought was a very nice touch, they went down very well! We spent 4 nights at Turrock cottage and really enjoyed our cosy evenings in front of the fire. Dieidre & Ciaran were lovely people and recommended us to the best tourist places to visit in Wicklow. We will be going back in the future and I would recommend anyone to go.

Magical Cottage in the Mountains
Turrock Cottage is truly a magical cottage which my wife and I found very, very difficult to leave. In a perfect world, Deirdre and her family (including the animals) would be our neighbors because three days in Turrock just weren't enough. We were greeted with flowers on our kitchen table, freshly baked scones and brown eggs from their chickens. Everything in the cottage is beatifully laid out and decorated and functional. GREAT kitchen with wood burning stove. Very comfy beds, great shower, views from the second story to Die for (we loved reading up there!) My wife and I can't recommend Turrock Cottage highly enough and are very jealous of all you good people who will have the opportunity explore the Wicklow Mountains in greater depth than our mere three days there allowed. We'll never forget our trully magical stay there.

AMAZING PLACE
What a beautiful, wonderful amazing place this has been. We all had a wonderful time staying our first 3 nights in Wicklow at Turrock Cottage. The cottage is very very lovely with all the amenities possibly needed. The scenery is beautiful, wonderful and relaxing. A truly amazing place to be. As we arrived on our first night we found lovely scones, jam and eggs waiting for us at Turrock which made our eyes shine bright and feel so at home and happy. On our second night we all gathered up together by the fire and had such a good time with such lovely and friendly people. Deirdre and Ciaran are also amazing people so nice and welcoming we truly enjoyed and most definitely miss the place, their company and smiling faces together with all the sweet animals at the place. We will never forget our lovely stay at Turrock Cottage and will surely be back for a longer stay. Thank you so much for a lovely and pleasant stay. Best wishes sent to you from Malta :) Fran, Karl, Claire, Isaac, Matthew.

Beautiful property! Perfect for our holiday
The property was grand. The place was all made up, scones on the table, fire in the burner. We were tired from travelling over, but Ciaran and Deidra made sure we were taken care of. We loved it. The property was quiet and calming. The scenery was peaceful and pastoral. Our stay was much too short. We were sad to leave. This is the only thing I can think of that could be seen as a negative - we wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was as it was described except they had lost some of their animals to a fox a few nights prior to our arrival. The property was better than we expected, and the hospitality was second to none. We have been invited back to stay with our new friends in Ireland, and have invited them to stay with us in the states. You will not regret your time at Turrock.
