About this property

Millthorn Cottage - Luxury Cottages

At a glance
Charming exposed stone walls Set in a tranquil, private estate Within a short drive of the Jurassic Coast
Millthorn Cottage is a semi-detached, stone cottage located at the edge of the pretty village of Membury in East Devon's Black Down Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set in the 8-acre estate of the owners' Grade II-listed, Georgian country house, the cottage offers a remote stay in gorgeous countryside. Yet, the Jurassic Coast, popular seaside resorts and a network of walking trails are all within reach.

The space

Millthorn Cottage is a single-storey holiday property that has a modern country-style decor and a spacious, airy feel so that you will feel comfortable whether you are staying with family or some of your closest friends. The open-plan living area comprises of a sitting area with a sofa and two high-backed armchairs, a fireplace and a TV for gathering together and hunkering down to watch a film. There's a dining table for four too, whilst the kitchen area features timeless cream, Shaker cabinets and is equipped with everything you'll need to prepare a delicious meal and to keep those drinks chilled.

You'll also notice pictures of aircraft worked into the interior design, which honour the White family who bought the estate in 1919 and were instrumental in the manufacture of early, pioneering aircraft.

There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds (which can be converted into a double on request) and both have an en suite shower room which makes getting ready to go out a whole lot quicker. It's so peaceful around the cottage that you should be in for a great night's sleep.

Outside the cottage is a patio area where you can enjoy countryside views with your morning coffee, or perhaps a delicious lunch whipped up from fresh and tasty local produce.

Guest access

Millthorn Cottage is one of five cottages set on the owners' 8-acre estate and on arrival, the owners who live in the Georgian country house on the estate, will be available to meet you. Guests are welcome to enjoy walks in the estate's grounds that include a garden with mature trees and a large pond, as well as a wooded area and fields. It's a totally peaceful place and as such guests are asked to respect the air of tranquillity.

Sustainability

The estate in which Millthorn Cottage is located is a haven for wildlife including deer and a range of birds. The owners are keen to help nature flourish by, for example, maintaining the natural pond and ensuring there are bee-friendly plants.

Things to consider
Overall stay was lovely, great location and Google maps gets you there fine but written instructions a little confusing with many DONT’s. The linens on the 2 single beds became very damp over the course of our 2 night stay which was of course uncomfortable. Possibly the stone walls/warm bodies. Perhaps a dehumidifier and some constant low heat could resolve this. There were guests in the cottage above us which was disturbing overnight. Very loud footfall, which is unintentional, but potentially avoidable with some rugs/carpets to help absorb the noise? We thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings and the cottage was comfortable on the whole. Very welcoming host.
