About this property
Welsh Gatehouse: Historical Castle with EV Charger
Travel and Hospitality Award Winner in the Category:
2024 Unique Accommodation in Wales!
The Welsh Gatehouse is a beautiful historic house with modern amenities. Imagine staying in a fairy tale castle built in 1270. The thick walls, ancient windows & steep spiral staircase say 'history'. Romantic log fires keep you warm you in winter, & the thick walls keep you cool in summer. Views from the top of the tower are extraordinary over the Severn Bridges and the Brecon Beacons (NB we call this the terrace in our description below). Unique, luxurious, quirky yet comfortable.
THE SPACE
A luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, (we think it was built approx. 1270) - the first historical mention is in 1307 when Bogo de Knovil died and his estate reverted to the Crown. So this Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a castle.
The perfect couples retreat, a great base for exploring South Wales! PROPERTY IS FOR 2 ADULTS ONLY. THE PRICE IS FOR THE WHOLE PROPERTY FOR 2 ADULTS.
We now accept up to 3 dogs for an extra charge.
Sorry, no babies and no children.
INSIDE THE WELSH GATEHOUSE
Extensively refurbished recently, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform!
Heating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood burning stove. The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need it. TV with Freeview, DVD player, CD player with iPod docking facility.
Please note, this ancient building's charm includes a steep spiral staircase. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large case, as the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted.
OUTSIDE
The property is self contained, and has its own entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live at the other end of the garden in a sixteenth century Monmouthshire gentry house. You are welcome to use the courtyard garden to lie and relax in the summer, or start cooking (we supply the barbecue, you supply the coals and food)
WHEN IS LOW SEASON AND WHEN IS HIGH SEASON? High season is Valentine's Day, Easter (Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday), May Bank Holidays, from July 25 to Sept 3rd and between 23 December to 2nd January. Over Easter and Xmas we require a minimum booking of 4 nights, and over Valentine's Day and other bank holidays a minimum of 2 nights.
GUEST ACCESS You are the only people staying in this self contained building. There are no other buildings nearby. The owners live at the other end of the garden in a Monmouthshire Gentry House (Refurbished in 1607). It is close to Chepstow, is in Monmouthshire, great for seeing and walking in the Wye Valley, the Forest of Dean, and close to Bristol and Cardiff.
Other things to note We supply all the linen, towels, wood for the wood-burning stove etc. You need to bring yourselves, your food and your drink!! (And coal if you intend to use the barbecue)
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Our hosts were great, fabulous directions and early communication. Lovely welcome pack with effort made to have things made specifically for the place. All the amenities you could want. Bed was very comfy with lovely linens. Such a really fabulous romantic sanctuary, hidden away in beds of snowdrops, but within easy reach of everything you need. Great log burner, which really warms the place, with all the original features of a characterful property.
Totally amazing from start to finish… would highly recommend… hosts are as fab as the property!! So wish we could keep this to being our secret!! Thank you so much… return visit guaranteed
The drive up the lane way and seeing the Welsh Gate House was beautiful! We climbed the spiral staircase to one of the best stays we have ever had. It was very romantic and the host went above and beyond with special touches. A very memorable stay and we look forward to returning one day.
Tastefully and thoughtfully restored with all comforts, and our own personal turret to admire the views. The warning about the steep spiral staircase and the ladder to the sleeping loft were not an exaggeration so not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. However, since my husband wanted to reenact the castle scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, he braved the staircase!
