About this property

Gorgeous barn conversion Northumberland coast - close to Embleton and Alnwick.

We are currently refurbishing our lovely cottage so have blocked out most dates to allow us to do that, however, we still have some availability so if you would like to stay this year please drop us a message and we will get back to you.

This grade II listed rural cottage has everything you need for a peaceful stay in Northumberland - famous for its breath taking coastline and castles. The cottage has beautiful original features along with a modern kitchen and bathrooms. There is a spacious lounge with comfy sofas and a wood burning stove for chilled evenings with a book or the TV. The property has a gorgeous south facing courtyard and a private garden. Both are enclosed and suitable for dogs.

It is just a 10 minute drive to stunning sandy beaches where you can relax, swim or build sandcastles. You can walk for miles along the coastline if you fancy or get involved in a variety of water sports and activities if that's your thing. There are also five golf courses close by.

With the lovely village of Embleton nearby you can walk from the cottage door in half an hour (just one mile across the fields) to the village (or 5 minutes by car) which has a well-stocked village shop and great pubs.

Fifteen minutes along the coast you will find Seahouses where you can hop on a boat trip for seal and bird watching and ten minutes further you will be at Bamburgh famous for its amazing castle and coastline.

Alnwick is a beautiful market town and just 15 minutes away where you can stock up on provisions. There is also lots to see and do - Alnwick Castle is one of Britain's most iconic castles and recognisable as Hogwarts from the Harry Potter Films. Alnwick Garden is a visit of its own - 42 aces of formal gardens, stunning water features and a huge treehouse and Barter books - one of Britain's largest second hand book shops - is a magical place to browse or have a coffee or an ice cream.

The closest main line station is in Alnmouth with regular trains to Berwick, Edinburgh and Newcastle.

Northumberland is a special place - there is lots going on if you want it but you can always find a secluded spot on the beach.

Good location
We love this part of the Northumberland coast and visit regularly, and we did have a good time. I do think this cottage is overpriced for the quality of accommodation. The kitchen and main bedroom are very nice but the rest is a little tired. The furniture is miss matched flat pack and the bedding is of poor quality. One of the sofas is very uncomfortable (kids said like their student digs) the curtains are far too thin and don’t keep the cold out, we had to buy a lot of wood to keep the lounge warm. We also had to bring our own towels and toilet paper not what I expect when paying over a thousand pounds for three nights. The location is lovely and it’s a clean property, with plenty of space but poor value.

Second stay at this lovely cottage
This was our second stay at MiddleBarn and we had another great week in this deceptively spacious cottage. Clean, comfy and relaxed, this has been the ideal spot for us and our two young boys to get to the amazing beaches at High Newton and into Alnwick / up to Bamburgh. Incredibly peaceful, we slept really well after all the sea air. Beds are comfy although mattresses may be getting close to needing a replacement soon. Nice bed linens and additional touches like hot water bottles should you need them. Lovely sunny kitchen with table for 6. It’s well equipped with pots and pans although you will need to take things like oil, herbs and spices if you want to cook. Likewise worth taking cling film, foil and extra loo rolls. A very happy week spent by our family in this beautiful part of the region. We hope to be back again.

Comfortable
Well equipped, plenty of parking , secure courtyard which was fantastic as very safe for dogs/ children. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept well there.A welcome pack would have been nice as the nearest store is a 15 mile round trip. The store in the village is now closed.

Lovely cottage
The cottage is in a very nice part of Northumbria. Central to get to most of the main attractions, such Bamburgh castle and Alnwick Castle/ gardens. The cottage itself had a relaxed feel about it. The kitchen cupboards weren’t as stocked as I would have hoped for- oil/ salt/ the basics, but there is a shop 5 mins drive away so that got sorted out pretty quickly.

We live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne - just 45 minutes from the property. We love the Northumberland coast at all times of the year for its amazing beaches and dramatic sea and skies.

Why they chose this property

The castles and coastline are breath-taking. Northumberland beaches and national park are understandably popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. There are also five golf courses within a short a drive from the cottage. Whether you want to play golf, build sandcastles with the kids on the beach, visit historic sites or enjoy great cycling on quiet lanes with great views there is lots to do.
Despite this Northumberland is never crowded. Shhhhhh..... dont tell anyone - we want it to stay this way.

What makes this property unique

Middle Barn is a beautiful grade II listed stone barn conversion and has been let as a holiday cottage for the past ten years. We are delighted to be the new owners in 2024. We absolutely love staying here - it is so peaceful and perfectly located to get to the coast. It is absolutely home from home for us and that is how we want our guests to feel.
