The Ohana House is an authentic plantation house, built in 1942 from lumber salvaged from dismantled WWII supply ships. It was built for a Japanese widow and her two children, and it became the heart of what is now Fern Grotto Inn. Carefully restored, it keeps its original materials and proportions and adds what a family or group needs: three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a dining table that seats eight.
THE HOUSE
• 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms; sleeps up to 6
• Beds: 2 queens and 2 twins
• Full kitchen and a dining table for eight
• Private yard and a palm-shaded porch
• Window air conditioning
• WiFi, Alexa, hair dryer, earplugs and in-room beach towels
• Coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and cooking oil to get you started
• One parking space
• Two gas grills in the common garden
GUESTS
The nightly rate covers 2 guests; each additional guest is $25 per night. Children are welcome, and children under 2 don't count toward the 6-guest limit. The guest who books must be 21 or older.
INCLUDED WITH EVERY STAY
Guests share complimentary gear, first come, first served: three kayaks (two doubles and one single), four bikes, two paddleboards, snorkel sets, boogie boards, beach chairs, coolers, mats, umbrellas, beach toys and life jackets. A double kayak alone rents for $95–150 a day in Kapaa; here you launch from the property, and the paddle to Secret Falls starts right off the grounds. Two guest laundry rooms are free to use, with detergent provided.
LOCATION
Wailua Beach is one block away. The protected lagoon at Lydgate Park, with its keiki (children's) pool, is a 15-minute walk. Kapaa Town's restaurants and shops are about five minutes away by car, or an easy ride on the coastal bike path.
