Riosucio is a beautiful, picturesque, and historic town located in the western part of the department of Caldas, Colombia. There, you can see the famous donkeys used to transport people, as well as the large and imposing Cerro Ingruma—a word that means “hard stone” in the local indigenous dialect. This is where the world-famous “Devil’s Carnival” is celebrated—but don’t worry! It’s not about the religious devil the world knows, but rather a symbol of unity and peace between two indigenous communities that were at war in ancient times, yet have now been living together in harmony for over 204 years—all thanks to a Spaniard and a man from Popayán, both priests of the Catholic Church, who brought peace and unity to two indigenous peoples. These peoples had a threatening figure that divided their territories, which dictated that if anyone crossed from one territory to another, that spirit would take them away. When the priests succeeded in bringing peace, they adopted that figure as a symbol of unity and peace, which is why the Riosucio Carnival is celebrated every two years, and its central figure is a devil.
