About this property
A European Country Getaway ~ 1930s Stone Cottage In Connecticut!
The Windy Top Cottage is an old stone building constructed in 1932 by H. L. Bitter, a wealthy Hartford businessman. This area of Granby was a favorite of the Hartford elite for a place to “summer” in the early part of the 20th Century. The cottage was the place where the domestic staff stayed when the family was staying in North Granby. With an elevation of 970, the home once had views of Hartford. Today after lots of trees grew, views are still just a minute away and the cool breezes remain!
Dawn and Ken have refreshed the interior with newly sanded "pumpkin pine" floors and warm, decorator wall tones. There is over 1000 of living space. The bath fixtures are original from the 30s and the huge stone fireplace has propane fired gas logs for cozy winter nights. The large first-floor great room also has a small coffee service, there is NO KITCHEN and we are NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.
The second-floor bedrooms are spacious and yet very cozy. The home has an English Country House feel with all furnishings provided by Dawn’s painted furniture business: A Girl With A Paintbrush. Flower boxes adorn several windows that overlook an herb and flower garden. The property is accessed by original brick walkways and lead to the private entry door.
Guests will be able to use the entire building with the exception of the garage bays for their private use. A private exterior patio is located out the back door with old patio chairs, benches, and a firepit.
Amenities include freshly laundered soft cotton bedding and towels, bathrobes, hypoallergenic or goose down pillows, cozy sofas, and chairs, comfortable carpeting, and rugs. The linen closet has an ample supply of bar soaps, shampoos, a hair dryer and a first aid box.
The spaces are accessorized with old framed artwork, mirrors, clocks and folk art. We offer a quiet, relaxing experience without TV, with old books, old magazines, and games to enjoy a special time with friends or loved ones. Excellent wireless service to keep tabs on the world if you need to.
The coffee service provides a toaster oven, a French press and a Keurig single cup coffee maker with fresh cream and organic sugar.
Our goal is to greet you and then leave you to enjoy the cottage and all the surrounding amenities and beauty at your leisure. We live in the main house so we are always available by text or cell phone.
The beds are a king sized and a standard full sized. The south bedroom offers an antique double. We provide a complete list of emergency info in the unlikely event that you would need it.
The exterior patio out the rear door is covered by an awning. The firepit makes great campfires for grilling hot dogs and making S'Mores.
Granby is an "upscale", small suburban Hartford community with tons of nearby amenities and located in an area known for working dairy farms, equestrian centers, apple orchards and farm wineries Our beautiful community also offers self-serve farm stands, homemade ice cream stores, art galleries, country libraries as well as gourmand evening dining establishments. The Windy Top Cottage is located in an area with breathtaking views of Massachusetts (walk just a little more than a half mile to the amazing Mary Edwards Property) and a 5-minute drive from the best waterfalls in Connecticut! We are surrounded by thousands of acres of hiking/walking trails, a game refuge and several state forests. Our street has huge old oak trees with amazing old stone walls and is a local favorite for jogging and walking. Ask us to send you our "Granby Hiking Guide".... This is one of my favorite get-aways, and I've stayed there multiple times. The cottage is beautifully decorated and cozy with wonderful touches like a large tea selection, heated mattress pads, a warm fireplace, and a towel warmer. The cottage is spotless and the hosts are lovely. I will be back!
Everything was lovely! The host was welcoming, the cottage was adorable. Amenities were great (fire was on when we got there, warming blankets on the bed). So cozy! Perfect place to snuggle up during the coldest weekend of the year. We'd definitely stay again.
Cozy get away. The wooded location is peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. The attention to detail by the hosts in decorating, lighting, ambiance and hospitality was amazing. We had a delightful stay.
This is a host who obviously loves to do just that - host! We had an awesome night staying in the cottage. It is so cozy, clean, and stayed so warm during a cool rainy fall night. Beds are super comfortable & the shower water is plenty hot. Lots of clean towels and other essentials offered. Super lovely place.
We had a wonderful stay at this comfortable, cozy stone cottage. The space is filled with beautiful antiques, and the fireplace made our evenings especially warm and relaxing. The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the host was responsive, thoughtful, and communicated so well throughout our stay. There were so many personal touches — it felt like everything we might need had already been anticipated and provided. A truly charming and welcoming place. Highly recommend!
Awesome little outbuilding. Loved the stone work and can appreciate all the hard work that went into making this a unique stone cottage experience. Will use again in the future.
This cottage is adorable, comfortable, and the hosts think of everything. It's very cozy, there is a lovely assortment of teas, and there are some goodies. This was our second visit, and we will definitely be back.
Charming cottage, wonderful hosts!!Two over-60 grandmas, one from CT and one from MA met to sit in front of the fire with a cup of tea and catch up. This was the perfect setting to simply retreat and relax.
We had a wonderful overnight visit. The fireplace and the warm beds were a perfect night away from the family over the holiday. Thank you for making our anniversary special.
Such an incredible VRBO. The place was immaculate. The beds exceptional and the retreat was such a delight. Great food close by, with an incredible atmosphere.
My sister and I had a wonderful stay at Windy Top stone cottage. It was very quiet, clean, and beautifully decorated and surrounded by lovely gardens. It had an awesome stone fireplace too but being hot weather we did not have a chance to enjoy it. Perhaps next time, during the colder Winter months. We would definitely return.
