About this property
Cabin W/Guest Quarters on 5 Acres....Great for 2 Families - 1 Mile from Town
Due to bedroom layouts - may not be appropriate for children under 12 No pets, No campers
A true "cabin in the woods" experience. 5 private acres but 1.8 miles from the town of Custer. The cedar house has ceramic tile floors throughout, leather furniture, new kitchen appliances and LOTS of windows.
The main house sleeps 2 in the master bedroom, 1 in the attached 'western room' (accessed outside from the porch) and 1 in a portable twin. The guest house sleeps 2 in the main studio room and 1 in the small bedroom.
The master bedroom is furnished in aspen log with a queen bed and master bath. We have an ungraded twin roll away sleeps 1 w/room in the utility-pantry room. The porch outside the utility room gives access to the 'western room' which has a full size bed with beautiful rock and cedar walls, just steps away from the bathroom. (not appropriate for children under 12)
The Guest quarters is setup like a studio apartment (minus a kitchen) but with a bathroom/shower and living area. The main room has a queen size bed, sofa, tv, armoire, small fridge. The second room has a full size bed a separate entrance if needed and all the character of a cabin setting. (not appropriate for unattended children)
The property has 2 security cameras outside. One on the carport and the other on the northeast corner of the house
We also have a pak'n play and a booster chair w/tray.
There are 4 covered porches the favorite and largest is partially enclosed with comfy wicker furniture. It's a favorite spot for morning coffee, watching thunderstorms or sipping cocktails in the evening. From any porch you can enjoy the view, peacefulness and wildlife.
Custer is in an area known as the 'heart' of the hills and local attractions include Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel and Wind Caves, the scenic Needles Highway. It is also 6 miles from Crazy Horse Mountain, several lakes and approximately 55 miles from historic Deadwood and the Rapid City airport, 21 miles from Mount Rushmore. This area also attracts motorcyclists especially during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. In the fall Custer State Park hosts the famous Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival.

Great location for everything we wanted to do near Custer! Was perfect for our family! Plenty of space and loved the guest house! Would definitely stay there again!
Our stay overall was good, our kids love the outdoors so great place to be away from everything! We had a horrible smell in the guest house, but Mary reimbursed us one nights stay.
Nice clean property. Had to purchase a few things like paper towels, wash clothes etc but over all great place. Would definitely stay there again! Loved the location for our adventures.

Thanks for taking time on writing a review! There should have been plenty of wash clothes but I will double check. The website shows what we provide, paper towels is not one of them!!
Regards Mary
A little challenging to maneuver a truck and 24 foot trailer but overa⁹ll it is an awesome property and the amenities were absolutely great. We all enjoyed the heck out of it . The host was very helpful with answers to our dumb questions lol. Thank you for providing us with an unforgettable experience. Looking forward to doing it again.
Great cabin and location. Love the property with space for our 4 boys to roam. So convenient to run into Custer for supplies. Easy trips to Sylvan Lake, Stockade Lake for fishing. Would definitely stay again!

Thanks for staying Lonny, we welcome you back anytime. You were a great guest!
Being from the flat lands of Illinois we had a lot of goals to check off. Our cozy retreat was just perfect! It was close to town for supplies, central to all our destinations and serene in our down time.
This property is very well stocked and maintained. It has a lot of space for everything you need to do and has an area that family can hang out and spend time. It is an awesome VRBO. This is my second time staying there with my family.

Location was great, Only one real bedroom in the main cabin. alleged second bedroom was in laundry room with a signal roll bed . Two of the three showers were so small you could not turn around in or bend over to was your feet. the guest quarters was not clean upon arrival dead bugs and dirt on the floor. trash in the can just outside the door. Of the Two beds one had a pad as a mattress. No frig or coffee makers in this building. again shower very small. we arrived at 4 pm as the maid was leaving and the floors in the main cabin were wet. The add states great for two families and a total of 7 people not sure where all seven would sleep, as the 4 of us had a problem. Would we rent again NO

Sounds like you didnt find the second bedroom off the main house, we provide 3 keys, one of them opens it. Its location is described in the description of the house. Every bed has a regular mattress on it so, no idea what your talking about in regards to just a pad on one of the beds. The roll away bed in the landry room is actually very comfy and its for squeezing in a 7th person. Many people have used it with no complaints including my 85 year old mother. Others have used it for small children who want to sleep closer to their parents. There are 2 coffee pots on the property one in the main house and one in the guest house. The refrigerator in guest quarters is being replaced, someone left it completly unusable. Potential guests should read the information provided on the website. This is a cabin with unusual layout but it is described well on vrbo. There are 5 beds 2 queens, 2 full size and the roll away. Not sure how this didnt work for a party of 4.
I will talk to housekeeping about your concerns, normally they do good work.
The main cabin has all modern appliances and was spacious. Back cabin was great for added sleeping room and facilities. Quiet secluded property and conveniently located. Thank you for the use of this nice home.
Very clean, with lots of wildlife. A few cars pasted each day. Quite and private. We had a great time. Nothing bad to say.

Wonderful!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mary's cabin! It was a perfect setting, just 1 mile from the City of Custer and also on a gravel road that we could travel with our Ranger, enjoying the sights. The accomodations were great for 6 adults and three children. The only regret we had is that we wish we would have stayed one more night (we were there for 5 nights) just to enjoy the cabin... Thanks, Mary and we hope to visit your lovely cabin again!!! Terry and Sandy Gillespie, Clinton, MN

Great Setting
This was a beautiful area. Saw deer in the yard every day.
No air conditioning but didn't need it. The cabin was nice and cool.
The guest cottage is a garage that was made into two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The 2nd bedroom at the main house you have to go outside to use. It did smell musty.
Those extra bedrooms could have used some kind of cooling unit.
The cabin could have been cleaner....a lot of dead bugs and cobwebs.
The towels all smelled dank and musty.
Overall, it was comfortable and we enjoyed our stay.

Thanks for your feedback. We don't provide air conditioning as it would spoil the pristine and quiet environment of the forest, we do provide several floor fans. The outside entrance to the "western room" is noted in the property and bedroom descriptions. The forest does produce many bugs and we do spray regularly, a few days between renters and cleaning can leave a few bugs present, this is just part of the environment. Our towels are regularly sanitized as the well water will leave a metallic smell to them perhaps someone left damp towels sitting in the dryer I will have house cleaning treat the towels. Thanks!

Very Good!
We were well pleased with this home. The main living areas were welcoming and comfortable. The setting was beautiful with the pine trees right outside the windows and a small pond nearby. We could hear the ducks and geese each evening. It is a little way out of town and that was great for us. We felt as though we had our own private piece of the mountain yet it was only about 5 minutes to the grocery store in town.
The sleeping arrangements are spread out so you don't feel as though you are all jammed together. We had three couple and two kids and we did well though I don't think more people would be comfortable.
It was clean and well appointed. We really didn't require anything that was not on hand.
We found a lot of wonderful things to do in the Black Hills and Custer was a reasonable central location to be based. I truly recommend exploring the beautiful Black Hills area and feel that this property is a good value.

Tom, Thanks for your positive review and glad you enjoyed it. Mary
Just returned from a week long stay. This property was perfect for my family of seven. The location serves as a great home base to see all of the sights we wanted to. Really great decor.
My husband and I stayed in the master bedroom in the main house. There is no AC but a combination of ceiling fan and stand up fan kept things cool enough. It was high 90’s one day and then low 60’s the next! Reminded us of home in New England! I would suggest replacing the shower head in the master stand up shower. It’s old and streams of water shot every which way on one setting so we could only really use the three stream pulsating. I didn’t realize until our last day 🙄 that there is a full bath with bath tub off the laundry room.
One word of advice to potential renters…if you can, stop in Rapid City and pick up groceries, before you get here. The local “DakotaMart” has got to be the worst grocery store I’ve every been to! Flies all over the produce, no decent sliced American cheese just the cheap mainly oil stuff and the selection of bread…just plain white bread…was atrocious! The loaf we got was so gross it essentially crumbled in my hand. Many former renters leave some things there like soda or condiments. We grabbed paper towels, plates. But cleaning supplies like dish soap, sponges, laundry soap are well stocked.

Thanks for staying Liz! So glad you enjoyed. We will look into the shower head. The grocery store is usually fully stocked and clean. I'm surprised of the condition you experienced! Although depending what part of the country you come from you may think the prices are high. Appreciate your feedback - Mary

A mixed bag
I have stayed at cabins like this all over the country and found this one to be average at best. The location is ideal. We stayed there four days and had easy access to local attractions. The cabin was also clean and spacious with beautiful scenery (we saw deer every evening, many birds, etc). On the con side, I felt like this owner was just stingy. She could have invested so little to make things more comfortable. If visitors are coming from the East coast, they have a 12 hour travel day (this is by plane; longer of course, if people are driving) and it would be nice to just have some bottled water or something for guests when the arrive (this is typical of EVERY place I have stayed in the past). It would be nice to at least have coffee filters and coffee too, which is usually standard. There was ONE coffee filter in the cabin and no coffee (for four guests staying 4 days). Most places I've stayed even have coffee and tea. Again, this would cost the owner barely ANYTHING and make the stay so much nicer. The towels in the master suite were so shabby and threadbare that I needed 4 just to dry off after a shower (and I'm a skinny girl!). It looks like they had been bleached within every inch of their lives and were so small that if I held it up, it would not even reach my waist. The bed in the master suite is very uncomfortable and the shower would go from scalding hot to freezing cold about 15-20 times in the course of one shower. The first day I thought perhaps our friends were showering at the same time or using the washing machine, but they were not, as it happened the next day when I "scheduled" my shower. In addition, this woman has so many rules that we had to print them out, as we were afraid we would not get our deposit back (don't bother, as she has it plastered to the refrigerator). For some reason, we had to wash our own sheets on the day we left AND have a second load in the dryer. I'm not sure why, but I'd like her to have an early morning flight and have to get up at 4 in the morning to do LAUNDRY before she heads home. Ridiculous! We were paying a hefty cleaning bill and there was no cleaning while we were there, so why is this necessary? Perhaps she's had some bad guests but we found it OVERKILL and this left a very bad taste in our mouths.

A few facts...
We also stay in vrbo homes including a beach side penthouse in Hawaii, even it did not not provide coffee or bottled water nor has it been provided in any home we rented. The rental agreement details what is provided.
Our coffee pot does not require filters if any were present a renter provided them on their own and left them.
The towels are brand new and maybe have been washed 3 times, the original plush heavy towels took to long to dry.
The mattress is top of the line Stearn & Foster its not old, doesn't sag, is not extremely hard or soft.
Extreme water temp changes in the shower have never been experienced or reported but we will check to make sure that hasn't changed.
In 12 years of renting we've never charged extra or retained deposit money for cleaning.
The cleaning fee would not be considered "hefty" for 4-5 hours of cleaning.
The cleaning window is small (4-5 hours between guests).
Cleaning personnel requested guests START two loads of laundry, the request is "wash one load, put it in the dryer, start a second load leave it in the washer". This shortens cleaning time especially with bedding and towels for 9 people.
We are very accommodating if renters contact us with specific needs or concerns. Had we been contacted about your early departure we would have understood and not wanted you to start laundry.
It's always best to contact owners for issues in advance or when they occur so they can be addressed.
We found this rental to be in an excellent location. We wanted to attend the evening show at Mount Rushmore. From the house it was easy to get to and especially coming home in the dark. It was nice to be so close. Custer, with some excellent restaurants was also close by. The house had plenty of space for two couples traveling together. The detached bedroom and bath made it easy to have some individual quiet time.
Cabin was very clean and furnished very well. We loved how quite it is there even during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We got lucky and had a full super moon that was absolutely beautiful. Coffee in the morning while watching deer and turkeys was a real bonus as well. We had a great time and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay in the Black Hills to stay here. Short drive into town and then explore the beauty of the Black Hills.
A very unique property. We had the maximum number of allowable guests (9) and it was just a bit tight but very manageable with just a small amount of flexibility required. I personally loved the Cowboy Room (a special sleeping porch) - while it does not have direct access to the house, the laundry room and second bathroom are just a couple of steps away (with a covered porch overhead so no issue with getting wet if it was raining - which it was). The property is just minutes from Custer - but feels a world away. We did lots of tourist things - and the location is central to lots of activities. We loved all the porches - makes the property "live" even larger than it is. The living room with a comfortable sectional and seating for 9 at tables made for a great gathering/dining area. The kitchen is laid out to allow several cooks at one time. The five acres has lots of trees and a large grassy area for lawn games. The separate cottage allowed our youngest family (with young kids) a place to get away from the rest for nap time or just some private quiet time.

I live in beautiful Colorado foothills.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with the Black Hills after several trips to the Sturgis motorcycle rallies. The hills and rock formation are beautiful, peaceful and scenic with lots of history. I love the small town slow pace.
What makes this property unique
Most people can't decide if they should stay and hang out at the cabin or if they should go sight seeing or tour other area attractions. It is so relaxing you won't want to leave!!
