We had an amazing visit in Chelem the food and accommodations were perfect. The locals were super nice and did their best with our poor Spanish speaking skills to help us with everything they needed. There were a large # of retired American or English speaking people there to help with everything else. It has the most beautiful beaches i have ever seen snorkeling in the mornings was amazing. Bug spray is a must in June because of the mosquitos are not so nice to tourist after dark. Dinner at sunset at Molusk is a must! its a bit pricey for the area but well worth it.

We enjoyed a quiet stay. It is a big house with a small but deep, nice and refreshing pool in a sleepy village. The beach is out your patio door and the upstairs deck is large and has lots of seating and sunning options. It is drivable to cool ruins and awesome cenotes.

Peaceful and beautiful spot

We had a lovely time and the house is perfect for a quiet beachfront stay. All the amenities we needed and great hosts. Easy to communicate with them to get extra water and to check in/check out. We even hired a local chef to cook dinner two nights that they recommended. We'd love to go again!

What a Delight!

We truly enjoyed the 10 days we stayed. Communication was great and the check in and out processes went smooth. Lovely home in a nice fishing village. We truly enjoyed visiting the cenotes and learning about the nearby ruins. We also had fun fishing with a local guide. We felt safe the whole time we were here. If you're thinking of visiting this part of the Yucatan, you should give this home serious consideration.

Where do I start?! WOW!!!

Where do I start?! WOW!!! We searched VRBO for weeks all thru the Caribbean looking for something directly on the beach and at the same time remote. Almost giving up on finding what we wanted and settling, we switched our search to the Yucatan and this beautiful home right on the beach in a remote fishing village popped up. After viewing the photos, it was an immediate decision. It was way beyond what we hoped to find! Originally we were planning on renting a car to see some of the nearby attractions, like the Mayan ruins, cenotes, etc. We got a ride from Merida to the house and while I was unloading our bags my wife went inside the house and I could hear her screaming with excitement. This home is so amazing that we decided not to get a car and spend most of our time enjoying this beautiful place and relaxing on the beach. (Thank you Jennifer!) When we arrived in Merida, Veronica and Lisandro stayed in communication with us to help make our way to the house smoothly. When we got to the house we were greeted by Jorge who gave us a tour and helpful tips on where to eat and who to get rides from as needed. He became our lifeline while we were there gladly helping with anything we needed very quickly. We loved this place and the wonderful management team support. What an experience for our 25th anniversary! We will definitely come again!

Not what we expected for the price

This could actually be a lovely home, but at the price point we expected a much nicer rental. We only stayed 2 days out of 14. 5 of those days were because the weather was not good so we left the beach, but we elected not to return for other reasons. The major issues include poor mattresses, pillows, linens and lighting. The sliding doors and screens barely functioned, the burners on the stove didn't all work, and the espresso maker wasn't fully functional. The kitchen tools were basic. There were not enough lamps and the bulbs that were there were those awful "daylight" bulbs. Really horrible lighting. Regarding the surroundings, this must have been off-season, because there was no one around, which was eerie. Many of the homes in the neighborhood appear abandoned or completely shut down for the season, which wasn't a good vibe for a vacation. The beach isn't actually private, which is important to know. There is only a dining table outside downstairs. There are also no decent restaurants unless you drive at least 20 minutes. We were hoping for some charming cafe's etc, but the vibe is more dive-bar. I take responsibility for not better understanding the location and neighborhood, but after having rented beach locations at many locations in Mexico, this was just nothing compared to my prior experiences, and yet the price point was comparable. The property manager was prompt and communicative, but we just couldn't waste our vacation in this uncomfortable space.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about our home and the location. I wanted to take a moment to address your concerns and to guide future travelers. Chelem is a very sleepy beach town, and this is mentioned in our listing. Research of the area on youtube or google does portray Chelem as such. In January and February, most guests are looking for a very quiet and relaxed vibe. Chelem, nor any of the little cities along the coast of Merida, are good for shopping, nightlife/etc. In our tips about the home/area, we mention that it is wise to grocery shop in the "city" before arriving into town. Even Progresso, the touristy part of the coast does not have a vibrant nightlife. The vibe is very different from Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Cabo, etc. As mentioned in your review, a better understanding of the area would have helped you to make a better choice for your family. Privacy of the beach - no beach in the state of Yucatan, Mexico is private. It was made into law in 2020 that all beaches are open to the public. With that said, because Chelem is a small little beach town, there are not many people who walk the beach. Usually, you will find other homeowners or short-term rental guests along the beach. The tourist beach is in Progreso, along the Malecon (boardwalk), this is where you will find the traditional beach crowd, who are just going for the day. At night, you will find families strolling along the Malecon, but the town is sleepy after dark. For the house, I am sorry that you do not like our lighting choice, daylight bulbs are our preference for lighting, as they mimic natural sunlight, which we felt was a good fit for a home on the beach. Both main bedrooms have 2 lamps each and ceiling lighting, and the third bedroom has ceiling lighting. The living room has two ceiling fans with lights, ceiling lights and a large lamp. The kitchen - Some folks are not used to gas burners/oven. Sometimes a pilot light goes out or a person does not hold down the lighting mechanism long enough to spark the pilot light. We would have been happy to help you. Also, the kitchen is fully stocked for 10 guests with pots, pans, bakeware, microwave, toaster, coffee makers, French press and more. Was there something special or specific you were hoping to find, maybe a specialty item for cooking? Linens and bedding – We buy and replace linens regularly, but I will make sure that we do a thorough check in of our linens and pillows. Thank you for letting us know you have a different preference for your linens. Sliding glass doors – Because we are on the beach and so close to the water, sand regularly blows around the house and the sliding glass doors get hit with sand. With the beauty of the water at your doorstep, there is this compromise. Overall, this might not have been the best rental for you and your family. I think that a resort-style home would have been a better fit. My hope that anyone who takes the time to read your review and my response will have a better understanding of the unique charm of the Emerald Coast of Mexico, including Chelem.

A few things I will say it need a change is the air conditioning some of the rooms because it didn't work correctly. And then the lights inside the house turn off on their own for a few minutes everyday after 7pm. Besides of all that everything was great. Thank you to the host.

Thank you for staying with us, Pedro, and for taking the time to leave a review. We were so happy to host you and your group for the beach proposal. Thank you as well for sharing the photos with us—it was wonderful to see such a special moment, and we were honored that our home could be part of it. We also appreciate you letting us know about the lighting issue. After investigating, we discovered that a circuit breaker was beginning to fail. We have since replaced it, and the problem has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your stay, but we're grateful you brought it to our attention so we could correct it. We're sorry that the air conditioning in some areas did not perform as expected. We will be reviewing the system to ensure future guests have a more comfortable experience. Thank you again for your feedback, and we wish you the very best.

Wonderful stay in Chelem!

This property was exactly as advertised. It was beautiful, relaxing and safe. The house is much larger than it appears in the photos and has absolutely everything you need to make yourself at home. The property manager was responsive and helpful the entire time we were there. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Amazing experience!

We rented the house for our sons birthday, we had a great time, beach is steps away and swimming pool is in the back which you can enjoy in the privacy. We had our 1.5 daughter with us, the place is very kid friendly. Overall the service was great, we interacted with some of the staff, everyone very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again.

Beach Serenity

I rented for a month with my 8 year old son, and had various friends and family come and stay throughout. We all agreed the property was just lovely. Very safe and quiet area. We enjoyed the pool and the ocean - I was able to work on my laptop while I watched my son snorkel in the ocean... what could be better?! There were a ton of fish to be seen. The property management was super responsive and provided us everything we needed. Would highly recommend, and we hope to be back ourselves.
