About this property
A remote cabin surrounded by Pine, Birch and Aspen trees, five miles to Deadwood
*Notice for repeat guests - the F.S. trail access has changed, read further down* One mile of gravel driveway leads to The Rustic Cabin in the midst of the Black Hills surrounded on two sides by Forest Service. There are hiking trails leading into the forest service directly from the cabin and if you are lucky and walk quietly you will see deer, jack rabbits, turkey and possibly elk.
Take a break from technology as there is no WIFI and limited cell service. Instead in the evenings enjoy star gazing from the porch or gazebo. Or take a short drive to the historic gambling town of Deadwood five miles north on Hwy 385.
Inside, you'll find a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, oven, dorm size refrigerator, beverage refrigerator, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and a grill on the covered front porch, allowing you to easily prepare delicious meals. Relax in the living room and unwind with the Bose wave radio or a movie on the DVD player. There is a view of the pond and gazebo from the covered front porch of the cabin. During the dry months of July & August the pond is very low as it fluctuates due to the water table.
Because the nighttime temperature range in the mid 40’s to 50’s we do not offer air conditioning.
There is trailer parking for your ATV, side x side or motorcycle trailer. Just go past the driveway that leads to the cabin then straight ahead towards the gazebo to park your trailer.
The Black Hills motorized trail system can be accessed at the Steel Wheel Gas and Convenience store located 1 mile south from the cabin on Hwy 385. A permit is needed to use the Forest Service trail system. Permits are available for purchase at Steel Wheel. As of July 2024, Forest Service closed trail 538.1G and trail 247.1E which were used to access the motorized trail system from the cabin.
Our home is also on the property and you will see it first as you cross through the gate. The cabin has its own driveway access and is separated from our home by the small pond, gazebo and campfire area. Our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.
Bill designed and built the cabin which he finished in 2018. The cabin measures 12 × 26 with a 10 x 12 loft, a full bath, kitchen and a queen size bed in the loft (an earlier guest commented that the open stairs are steep). The living room area has a reclining couch and a comfortable recliner. The Samsung smart TV’s reception is by antenna with local channels.
Enjoy the convenience of being minutes from Deadwood and centrally located to all the famous attractions the Black Hills have to offer. Whether you're seeking a cozy retreat or an adventure-filled getaway, our cabin is the perfect destination.

Lynn and Bills cabin was amazing. Everything was comfortable and clean, attention to detail and communication was great. No issues at all while there, and convenient to all we wanted to see and do. Abundant wildlife also.

I agree with your wife the bathroom is awesome! I need to get the hanging plant back in its spot, but it grew so well that it is too big now. Bill did a very good job building this cabin. Glad you had a relaxing vacation.
Thank you, Becky, glad to hear everything was perfect since I was out of town and Bill was your host ;) And thank you for leaving the cabin in perfect shape after your stay. We sure appreciate you two!
What an amazing place! So quaint and cozy and so much wildlife! Bill and Lynn were great hosts. Definitely will recommend to others and rebook for ourselves if we visit the Black Hills again.

Yes, there have been a lot of turkeys this year! I counted 13 chicks with 2 hens that come up to the bird feeders. Thank you for your review and hope you have a chance to come back again.

Thank you, Becky! Even though the heater gave us trouble starting up this year, you still kindly left a nice review. Bill & I certainly do appreciate you to staying here :)
This place was so clean and inviting from the minute you walked in the door. Location is private, yet close enough to all the amenities around the area. The hosts were excellent, we definitely would stay here again!

Thank you, Robert, for your review. It was fun for me to decorate the cabin with the bear theme. We hope you have a chance to come back!
We loved this cabin that had comforts of home while still maintaining that cabin in the woods feel. The upstairs loft was fun, and we especially enjoyed the skylight/ high ceiling in the bathroom. The host went out of her way to be helpful. It’s a perfect location for day trips around the Black Hills.

Thank you, Tim, for your review. Bill wanted to keep the cabin "rustic" and a lot of the decor is from past guests which helps the cabin feel like home.
My partner and I stayed for a long weekend and it was a perfect cozy retreat. Hiking trails right outside the door but close enough to Deadwood for some fun nights out! We would definitely stay here again for our next trip

It was very nice meeting you both. We're happy you enjoyed the cabin. I also like the trail from the cabin that goes into the forest service and heads out to the meadow. Very quiet and peaceful. Hopefully one day I will get a chance to put benches along the trail to relax on.

About the host
Hosted by Bill & Lynn Davis
Bill is a carpenter by trade and built our home and this cabin for family and friends. He is a hard working guy and takes pride in his craftsmanship. He loves fishing at the gazebo and enjoys meeting our guests.
Why they chose this property
This is a secluded property offering a quiet place to get away from crowds with the nearest "seasonal" neighbor approximately 1/2 mile away. Yet we are close enough to Deadwood to enjoy all the town has to offer.
What makes this property unique
We bought this land in 1996 and have vacationed here for years before building. We love this property as it is quiet, wooded and peaceful. At nights you will occasionally hear the coyotes and owls. During the fall you may hear the Elk bugle close by.
