About this property

Rural Setting in 1919 Farmhouse Surrounded by Nature.

The little farmhouse is situated on 20 acres in the rural area of Battle Lake, Minnesota. There is a preserve to the west, situated on undeveloped lake shore, a soybean field to the south with open hay field to the east. It has a prairie garden that was started as a preservation site for the disappearing monarch butterfly. Those who come to visit may wish to see this noble butterfly in its natural habitat. The farmhouse is very clean and kept in its original 1919 character. The cooking stove is propane. There is one studio bedroom with a full (53 x 75 bed) and similar size podium bed upstairs in the loft. There are skunks under the old barn, marmots under the old feed shed, red and gray squirrels, fox, coyotes, beaver down at the dock at night and deer who pass through to eat the apples from the trees. A guest may or may not encounter wild life, but if so, the owner asks to observe but not disturb. A coyote or raccoon may wake you up at night. It has its resident bald eagle (utility company cut down its nest in 2018), raptors and a multitude of birds depending on the season. There is a main house on the property to walk past, through a grove of trees, to the lake dock or one can drive to the main house and take a shorter walk from there. There is bass and sunfish fishing off the dock. One can swim off the dock but there is no sandy beach. There is no television, the house has connected WiFi. There is a $10 internet fee refundable if not used. There is an outside fire pit and if it is a cloudless night you can see the stars, there is no light pollution. The sunsets and sunrises from the dock are beautiful. This place is for a special type of person(s) who wish to have a relaxing time in a rural setting.

Update; in May of 2022 a horrific storm came through that toppled many 60-70 year old trees. The guests will still see some down trees. The area is now being replanted with sugar maple, white pine, native birch and red and burr oak.

A Little Piece of Heaven

I was looking for a quiet peaceful location to spend some time just me & my dog, & came across Ole's House listing. It was a small little house built in 1919 off the beaten path. When I found this listing, I knew God had directed me here. It was everything I hoped for & more. I was able to enjoy the solitude & tranquility that I was looking for. I also had the great pleasure of meeting Jean, the owner of the property. She was a great host and a wonderful person. We took a couple of short walks together enjoying her beautiful property. I was blessed with an added bonus of snow on my day of arrival and on my last day. It added to the beauty of the property. I will definitely be going back to Ole's house again!

A fun blend

A great blend of old rustic characteristics and updated features! Be advised, there are a lot of windows and no curtains or blinds. Otherwise very comfortable and relaxing! I will be returning for a solo stay to write a book

Another Great Stay

This was the 3rd stay for my brother and me at Ole's House. We're in our late 70s and have visited Ottertail County since the early 1950s when we owned property on Ottertail Lake. Ole's House is a step back in time for us and we love it. A cottage on the edge of the woods with no annoying lights or noise from neighbors, but all the necessary amenities, including A.C. and internet. Perfect for us.

Quiet Country GetAway!

This was the perfect getaway for our family! Our 12 year old wanted a place to stay in the country and this was it. My husband and I grew up in the country and this brought us back to our childhood. The host was fantastic and answered any questions we had. She was a delight!

Fantastic getaway

Thus us our second stay here. Jean is a wonderful hostess. Location was perfect to kayak at Glendalough State Park, hiking at inspiration point and ice cream at Granny's in Battle Lake. The Phelps mill is also a short drive. It was fun to just relax on the dock and listen to the loons. We look forward to our yearly getaway to the Dalton area.

Quaint Farmhouse

This 1919 farmhouse surprised us with how well kept and quaint it was. It was so cozy and had everything we needed. We were very comfortable staying there and also hiked Glendalough State Park nearby. Our black lab had a great time exploring the woods around the property as well. Thanks for a wonderful place to just "get-a-way"!

Quiet getaway

I’m so grateful to people who make their corner of the world available as a resting place to recharge and a point from which to explore. The old farmhouse is so charming. I was left wanting to know the history. The cultural and natural history of this part of MN is raw and fascinating with glacial, Native American, and farming interest and surrounding small towns to explore.

Another great stay at Ole's House

This was the second stay at Ole's House for my brother and me and was just as great as the first. We have been visiting Ottertail County since we were children in the 1950s and bemoan many of the changes the have occurred over the decades: more people, more noise, brighter lights and so on. Ole's House is a step back into the past with the two modern amenities that we really do appreciate, air conditioning and internet access. No people around, no noise, no bright lights to prevent you from enjoying the incomparable night sky. And close enough to Battle Lake and Fergus Falls to make shopping and dining convenient. Jean is a great host and had everything in order for our stay. She also responds quickly to any questions that might arise. We wouldn't want to rent any other place when visiting Ottertail County.
