MULTI-LEVEL COTTAGE - PRIVATE PIER HARRELLSVILLE, NC FOR HUNTERS AND FISHERMEN.
This cottage rests on top of a bluff 60' above the Chowan River. The outdoor stairs take you to the private pier. The pier does not have power to it. Should you need to recharge your batteries while your boat is tied at the pier, we have plenty of extension cords - just ask for them. We understand this is amateurish, but it works, and we are far from being professional. If you would rather keep your boat on its trailer, it can be parked in the yard. We have room for 4 boats and trailers at the cottage, and if you get creative when you park, there's room for 2 more. There are 2 landings available to get your boat in the water. One is a short distance from the cottage, and there is a box to drop in a $5.00 fee on the honor system. The other is past the gas station in Harrellsville. That landing goes into the Wiccacon river which flows into the Chowan. It is free, and not far from the cottage. The original cottage is about 65 years old. We gutted it several years ago and added a loft. THIS COTTAGE IS NOT FOR USE BY THOSE WITH DISABILITIES. THERE ARE 2 SETS OF STEEP STAIRS INSIDE, AND ANOTHER SET OUTSIDE TO GET YOU IN THE FRONT DOOR. MOST GUESTS USE THE BACK DOOR TO AVOID THE OUTDOOR STAIRS. The cottage was not built to be fancy. It is utilitarian and furnished with odds and ends from our farm. There is a screened in back porch. The appliances were new when installed. The beds are new and we've been told, very comfortable. We have the internet and cable TV. There are 2 full bathrooms. There is a washer and dryer and dishwasher. We supply all linens, enough towels and wash cloths for 5 people for 5 days, as well as extra bedding for all beds. We supply all paper products and cleaning products. The kitchen has all you need to cook and clean up. You just need to bring your food and clothing with you. There is an extra fee for pets. Our cottage works well for hunters and fishermen. Our farm manager also sets up private hunts for bear, deer, and turkey in their seasons. Our farm manager and his wife take care of cleaning and maintaining the place. They are not far away and will be available to you if there are problems with the cottage.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

The place is very dated and more of a camp than a cottage. It’s ok for a couple guys on a fishing trip, but my wife wouldn’t stay here. Steps into and stairs inside are homemade, very steep and have no hand rails. Bare minimum repairs and upkeep have been made. The dock is very old and has no power, and is too far to run an extension cord, so you would need to take your boat out of water in the evenings to charge trolling motor batteries. Several boards have been replaced on dock, but several more are loose and several nails are sticking up, it’s pretty sketchy. Again, it was just OK for 2 guys there to fish for a few days, just don’t expect anything super nice or fancy. There is a boat landing within walking distance that has about 12 parking spaces. There is plenty of parking at the place for a couple boat trailers. I would stay here again for a fishing trip, but only if I couldn’t find anything else.
Perfect place to stay while visiting family in the area. The kitchen had a great variety of utensils, pots, pans, and small appliances. The beds were comfy with plenty of blankets and towels. Steep steps at the entrance and inside might be a challenge for individuals with limited mobility or small children, but a great place for adults and big kids otherwise.
The beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed the big window overlooking the river, and our dogs loved running around the yard. We visited Merchant's Mill Pond State Park and enjoyed Tar Hill BBQ.
House is older and has its issues but for the price and location it's great! Host was very good about communicating with us. This place does have some very steep steps so if your not good on steps I would look elsewhere. AC worked great and we cought fish from the dock. The boat ramp is walking distance. View of the river was very nice.
The home was great and met all our needs! Loved the screened in porch, my grandson loved the fire pit for his smores. The owners are wonderful to work with, overall we had a lovely stay. I would highly recommend, especially if you have a larger family or group staying in the home.
Great location for someone fishing the Chowan River. Convenient to boat ramp in the subdivision (1/4 mi) and to Hwy 13 ramp (15 min drive). Probably not suitable for small children due to steep stairs but basic accommodations for fishermen and hunters at a reasonable price.

The house is in perfect location. There needs to be some upgrades made. We could not get the television to work. Too many remote controls and no directions . Just need to be able to turn lights on and off with a switch not a remote. We enjoyed our stay over all. Will love to stay there again
We are a group of kayakers and this house was conveniently located a very short drive from the boat ramp on the Chowan River. The check in process was easy. We had a few issues during our stay, however, the owner was very responsive and accommodating, and quickly rectified the situations. The beds were very comfortable, with an abundance of clean towels in the bathrooms. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking items, though a few items were worn. We enjoyed walking down to the dock to watch the river flow by. Sunrises and sunsets were lovely.
Nice place and great location. Needs a few upgrades
Toilet handles need replacing. Furniture in living room needs replacing
Need instructions on working TV
Beautiful river view from a big window in the main room. It has a rustic fishing lodge feel and a long pier for fishing. My grand kids loved the attic room. The stairs inside and out are step as noted in the listing. Beds were comfortable for us. The high up river view was the best. Neighborhood was quiet and well kept, we felt safe.
It was great, plenty of supplies and just as advertised. The stairs are steep, but created no problem for us. The second bathroom is in the basement, which was a little inconvenient but it worked. The pier was great to tie up our kayaks, and take off from there. I would recommend!
Very clean and a beautiful view. Our only issues were the sulfur smell in the water, that was overpowering, and the steep stairs. It’s hard to mark negatives because the place was very clean with tall comfortable beds.
The view of the river was wonderful and it was a very quiet neighborhood!!

Thank you for your review. The sulfur smell happens because the water heater isn't used on a daily basis. There's a magnesium rod in it that emits that odor. We try to always run the hot water to eliminate it before a guest arrives. As for the stairs, we have fair warning in our description of the cottage about the stairs. They are steep and there are many. This cottage is not set up for those with disabilities. Sincerely, James Ernest and Linda Jones
About the host
Hosted by James Ernest Jones and Linda Jones
We (James Ernest and Linda Jones) have moved to Chapel Hill, NC for easy access to doctors and hospitals. We enjoy the farm and know that Andy and Melinda Eure are taking care of it along with the cottage. We are just a phone call away. We are very pleased the cottage is being used so much. We hope to have many guests over the years.
Why they chose this property
James Ernest had to make a decision to remodel this cottage, or tear it down because of damage done to the building over time. Guided hunting is popular in this area, and places to stay are at a premium, so the cottage was completely remodeled with hunters in mind. There are no frills in this cottage, but it is clean and comfortable and will be a welcome place for anyone to end a full day of hunting and fishing. It is located in a small subdivision called "Choanoke." The other residents live there full time, know James Ernest and his family and are good "crime watchers". This is a safe place to stay.
What makes this property unique
You should have most of the comforts of home in this cottage. The emphasis is on the hunting and fishing available to you, with our cottage giving you a good, safe, convenient place to stay while you hunt and fish. Our farm manager and hunting guide Andy Eure will be available to give you a good hunting and fishing experience. He also maintains the cottage and grounds and is available for unexpected issues at the cottage. His wife, Melinda makes sure the cottage is ready for you to enjoy your stay.
