A quiet gem in the hills of Catalonia
As a large family of 9, we had a fantastic stay here in July / August and have thought about returning, even though we generally tend to stay at a place just the once.
Montse, Alvaro and family are friendly and welcoming hosts. The farmhouse is their main home, with the lower ground floor for guests, separated from the main house so plenty of privacy. This was never a problem, they were happy to help when we needed and to give space when not (during our 2 week stay they were often away).
The property is quite well maintained. Some portion of the grassed area was under development but there was still plenty of yard space.
As the pictures show, the pool area is lovely. The pool is a good size, gets good sun, and overlooks the hills. We had a lot of fun playing pool games, diving in or just being lazy. We gave feedback at the end of our stay that some parts of the pool area needed a bit of maintenance, but again this is just normal wear and tear.
The kitchen is small but that didn't seem to be a problem. I would suggest that it could do with a better selection of cooking equipment, and food storage was limited for a large family, but we made do and it was fine. There is a small table in the kitchen, but we tended to eat at the large indoor table, at the large circular table out on the balcony, or in the cooking / dining room by the pool.
It was nice to have the pool table and ping pong table. The pool table and equipment did need some repair, so hopefully that has is better now (but the playing surface was fine).
The house is located at the end of a winding dirt road up a steepish hill. It's about a 5-minute drive into Amer, or a 15-20 minute walk following the path down the hill into town.
We really enjoyed walking up to the chapel at the top of hill, about 30 minutes and the views up there. There doesn't seem to be a lot of choice for eating out in Amer as it is quite small, but we'd definitely recommend Masai D'Amer (which you can walk to) – excellent food, nice setting and great prices.
Getting to Girona took about 30 minutes and was very easy. Driving to Barcelona took about 90 minutes.
Overall we had a really enjoyable family holiday here.
