About this property

Spacious Historic Townhouse - Character for All

This charming spacious historic townhouse is a completely renovated century-old duplex, near Historic Old Town St. Charles & Frenchtown. Sit on the porches & listen to the bells of the Church, goreous 6 ft tall windows that bring in the beautiful morning and evening light, enjoy meals in our spacious eat in kitchen or the dining room. Have coffee or wine on the large front or screend in back porchs, or take a walk down to restraurants, coffee shops, shopping, family friendly playgrounds & more.
The space
Completely renovated 125+ year old townhouse / duplex with great attention to details. Hosts live next door to help with any issues or questions.

On the 1st floor is a spacious Front room with a large smart TV and optional fold out sofa bed. (If you would like to use this sofa-bed, please advise and we will get it ready for you.) This opens up to a dining area with an expandable dining room table and a cozy "wood stove" with comfortable wing-chairs. This leads into a very large and modern kitchen with custom cabinets and a country eat in breakfast area surrounded by antiques and cookbooks. (look at the glass in the cabinets, they are more than 100 years old.) A full bath complete with a tub / shower and more antiques leads off from the kitchen. A full sized washer / dryer is also off the kitchen area.

Off of the Kitchen is a sliding glass door that leads to the very large screened in porch with comfortable seating that overlooks the garden with flowers and tropical plants (in season), a pond, a waterfall and brick walks. Surprisingly for an in city location, the views over the Missouri river looking due East go for miles and is especailly charming at night when the distant lights come on. A truely great place to enjoy the morning sunshine with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine to end the day. There is also a gas fired BBQ pit and an electric smoker that is available with notice. The porch is discretely shared with the Hosts.

Upstairs is the Master bedroom featuring a king sized bed with a Laura Ashely comforter and premium bedding, comfortable over stuffed chairs and very special views overlooking the Missouri River valley. There is a smart TV inside the amoire.

Overlooking this area is the library with a full sized bed, lots of books, and a cozy chair. The full sized bed is has lace trim, Laura Ashely bedding and lots of pillows. The library with a full size bed can be seperated from the king sized bed by a lace curtain for privacy.

The Master bedroom area includes an ensuite bath with a walk in shower and an ample sink and an adjoining walk in closet that holds extra pillows and blankets for both beds. Separating the two sleeping areas is a lace curtain for privacy.

In addition, the front bedroom is styled for the antique lover with a queen sized bed and charming hand made quilts. The large closet holds extra blankets and pillows.

The downstairs Front room has a full size sofa "fold a bed" that can be set up as a 4th sleeping area. It is a comfortable bed with a soft mattress topper. Please advise in advance if this is something you would like. The blankets and pillows will be stored underneath the decorative stairs as you enter the home.
Guest access
Of course, you have full and private use of the home. But the front entry porch with the rocking chairs is a shared enterance with the Hosts and the occasional mailman. The large screened in back porch is shared with the hosts. Enjoy the garden and walking paths, but they are also shared with the hosts (unless you would like to help with the gardening).

Please do not use the basement areas, greenhouse or garage areas.

We can make available a 4th full sized bed thru a fold out sofa in the living room which we can get ready for you with advance notice.

We try to be available to help, but we do not live and breath our phones. We will try to get back to you as soon as we see any messages, but that may not be instantaneous.
Other things to note
A couple of tips to make your stay comfortable:

Just in case, in the kitchen pantry, there is some emergency stuff like bandaids, a fire extinguiser, etc. Also, there is a flashlight - just in case.

There are some really interesting books in the library to read. More are added every week. Feel free to enjoy, but please try to return them before you leave.

Most of the wood trim came from the original home and was stripped and sanded prior to being reused. Many of the doors include transome - glass windows to allow air movement in the days before A/C. The wood is called "Pumpkin Pine" and is very special.

The floors are all Douglas fir wood that is unstained. It is the natural colors except where the rugs have allowed sunlight to affect the finish.

In the kitchen, there is a coffee and tea station (important), a full range of kitchen appliances and plenty of cookbooks. If you need something, please knock on the door and we will try to help.

For most of our meals weather permitting, my wife and I eat outside on the porch. We do not want to disturb you, we will try to be sensitive to your privacy. But we enjoy the birds and squirrels and the flowers and plants. Feel free to join us for coffee.

We have a gas fired BBQ pit and an electric smoker availallbe for your use. If you would like to use either of them, please advise and we can get them ready for you.

Host profile image
My background is in marketing and real estate. I lived in Europe for 10 years where I met my wife on the steps of the American Embassy in Budapest, Hungary. Great story best told over a cup of coffee on the back porch. My wife speaks 5 languages and is a delightful lady. We have a lot of stories to tell but want to respect your privacy. Always happy to help with suggestions as to places to go or foods to eat.

Why they chose this property

My father and my wife and I lived in this duplex for many years until his passing. It is unique area - close to the old town of St Chares, close to 2 private schools and churches, and close to many amenities and conveniences in comfortable walking distances for the region. Really a great place to live.

What makes this property unique

My father and I bought this duplex home 20 years ago and being in the construction / development business - we did a extensive gut rehab. Essentially, this is a new home in an old shell. During the renovation, we removed all the old trim and doors, had them stripped and then re-installed them thru ought the home for example: 125 year old doors with glass transom lead into most rooms. Wood floors, custom kitchen cabinets and wonderful front and back porches make this home very special.
