Went fishing and BBQ w/ the families & friends! And lots of rooms and spaces you won't regret it! Again what an amazing experience for a first timer hosting a beautiful cabin by Lake Superior!
This is my second time staying at this property and it’s even better than I remembered. It’s one of the most beautiful cabins I’ve ever stayed in and is right on Lake Superior. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a fun trip to the North Shore!
Sometimes the photos of properties look nice, but when you get there, it looks. . . . . different. This is not one of those times. It looked so great in the pictures we were convinced it would be a let down. If anything, the pictures do not do the property justice. Otters, loons, other waterfowl outside your back window. The sound of waves hitting the shore. What else could you want. Carrie was responsive to any questions or issues we had. There is plenty of space to gather and still some space to have alone time if you want. We will stay here again if we gather in this area again.
The home was perfect for our family’s Thanksgiving get-away! This home had everything we needed - well stocked kitchen (lots of plates, silverware, utensils, etc.), nice bedrooms and a large living room for everyone to relax and enjoy the holiday.
Hopefully we can come back again soon!
Our group of 12 adults, with just two couples, stayed 4 nights. The location was perfect for skiing and exploring the area from Tofte to the Gunflint Trail. Plus the view of Lake Superior was over the top fantastic. Sunrise and sunset were spectacular. Plenty of room for 12 people to enjoy each others company without feeling crowded. Yet enough room to get away from the rest of the group and find your quiet space. We had 5 vehicles and there was plenty of parking area even in the winter. Communication with the host was top notch and made our stay stressless. When the cost was divided by 12 it was less expensive per person and much more enjoyable than a hotel or lodge.
Absolutely beautiful property to stay at! Perfect location, very close to Grand Marais, Gunflint, trails. Great amount of space for a large group. Would stay here again!
Loved our stay and the arch. We had a great family vacation. Close to Grand Marais. Near awesome waterfall hikes like Cascade Falls and Temperance. Very clean home with gorgeous views of Lake Superior.
Perfect home for our multi generational family for a long weekend. Rooms are large, view is spectacular, kitchen is fully stocked. Great bonfire area with room to play outdoor games. Easy drive to Grand Marais. Very clean and stocked with supplies/towels. We loved everything about the home and hope to visit again someday!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home situated on the shore of Lake Superior. Lots of windows that overlook the lake, comfortable chairs to sit around the fireplace, and spacious bedrooms. We're excited to return next year.
The only way to get a better view of the lake is to be in it! This house was stunning and comfortable. The location is fantastic, situated between Grand Marais and Lutsen. We really enjoyed the stay and would love to come back!
Stayed with grandparents, two siblings, their spouses and children. The property is stunning. The views can not be beat! Very clean and well maintained property and even with the whole group never felt crowded. Close to town while still feeling very secluded. Will absolutely be back!
Panoramic views of the lake and the arch were incredible. The house is even nicer than the photos show. Carrie treated us very well and went out of her way to help and communicate with us on several occasions. We had a wonderful time!
Our son and his two children from Austria ages five and seven were visiting and we wanted to give them a Minnesota experience. I believe we managed to do 10 years of activities in 10 days. It was wonderful!
What a gorgeous setting! Loved the great room for gathering, we enjoyed playing games in the evenings, kitchen was perfect for cooking together and the proximity to Grand Marais made dining out & shops easy. Kids ski'd during the day and rest of us enjoyed hiking and relaxing. Carrie was very responsive & helpful when we had questions or needed assistance. We'd love to return and have recommended it to others. Thanks very much
We rented this house to get all our family together for a late Christmas celebration and ski trip. We loved this house. The veiw out the windows is amazing. We loved watching the waves coming in, the ice form on the arch and the sunsets each night. Carrie was checking in on us through messages during our stay and responded quickly to our questions. Thank you Carrie for sharing your home and we are hoping to come back sometime.
Living/dining room has Lake view, roomy & relaxing for our 8 adults/2 kids for a week. We knew no washer/dryer but regretted it. Someone had to sit in Grand Marais laundromat while others had fun. Bedrooms roomy! Some had shelves instead of dressers, some lacked blackout blinds, heat downstairs uneven, some had nightstand with lamp on only one side of the bed. Probably a one time thing, but kitchen chopping board was caked with food & smelly stuff in waste basket. Enjoyed the pool table. Good location. We enjoyed our stay.
Absolutely beautiful scenery, Lake superior is in your backyard. The noise from the waves can be heard inside, priceless. Only drawback is that you have to provide all your own linens. Really a hassle when you’re packing for skiing and snowmobiling, we barely fit in our car. I don’t understand why they can’t provide at least towels and sheets and we bring a blanket
Our large group was up at the North Shore to ski and enjoy being away together and Stone Arch was the PERFECT place for us to do that. The view from the house and being right next to the Lake added that special element that everyone loved. The 5 bedrooms were comfortable and gave everyone their own private sleeping quarters while the large, open gathering spaces provided the community gathering space we were looking for. Carrie was awesome to work with and made everything easy from arrival to departure. We would HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone looking to enjoy the north shore in a breathtaking setting. Thank you Stone Arch!!
Stone Arch is literally a stone's throw from the shores of Lake Superior and is a stunning setting to gather as a family for rest. The house is extremely comfortable and easy to facilitate a large family gathering with plenty of space spread out. It also is a perfect location about 5 miles south of Grand Marais, providing a great base from which to spend time skiing at Lutsen, hiking at Cascade State Park and spending time in Grand Marais. The property has some good space outside from which to watch the sunrise or sunset, and a paved trail is close by for running. The house was quiet and private, and every view from the house is like a postcard -- woods or lake or both. We will definitely keep this on our list for returning in the future!
We have stayed at several places along the North Shore and this one has the best views.
We were a little disappointed that we had to bring our own linens (none of the others had this requirement). For a family of four, that is a lot of bedding, towels, wash clothes, etc... to pack. We were also disappointed to find that there is laundry on site but we aren’t allowed to use it, especially when we have to bring our own linens... it would have been nice to be able to wash all those linens before heading home and again this is something that all of our other stays have allowed us to use.
My wife is sensitive to pet dander and we couldn’t use the basement at all because of that. We search for homes that don’t allow pets, but this one clearly has had dogs. I think it would be wise for them to replace the carpet in the house specifically because of that.
All-in-all, it was a fine stay that is nice and close to Grand Marais and had amazing views... but there are some things that could be improved.

About the host
Hosted by Carrie
Our family moved to Cook County in 1989 after transitioning from Eden Prairie and Shorewood, MN. What are now suburbs was once farmland. However, as these areas became more populated our family dog kennel was becoming more and more restricted, so in the 1980s we bought a one room cabin in Hovland and by 1989 the whole family (2 parents and 3 kids) and our dog teams moved to the North Shore. Fast forward to 2019 and we purchased this home to host our growing family including ten grandchildren. In the fall of 2020, the decision was also made to share our home with you when we are not gathering. So, with Grandpa Dennis as homeowner and his daughter Carrie as manager, and with much help and work ethic from the grandchildren, we have opened our home to you and hope your family will enjoy it as much as ours does.
Why they chose this property
Our growing family purchased this home for large family gatherings and family reunions. We live in Cook County, we love the community and the outdoor offerings. The large size of the home and the beautiful unique shoreline with the stone arch drew us in. Current code does not allow building as close to the lake as this home is situated. The home right on the water, the beautiful views, and the secluded, private feel of the property are just what our family needs.
