Not wort the money
It’s taken us a long time to write a review for this place as it is difficult to know how to pitch it. There’s a lot of positives and we had a great time there…but it was despite a lot being wrong. The only factor that has pushed us to write a review is the price going up and at the current price it really isn’t worth the money.
The great thing about the house is its location. Central Marathon, only a couple of minutes off of highway 1. Most importantly right on Vaca cut, the gulf is a couple of minutes one way and the Atlantic a few minutes the other way. Mullet come into the bay in a morning and you can cast net a few for bait, without having to leave the house. Tarpon patrol in front of the area and can be seen smashing mullet around every dusk. The fishing is great from the end of the dock- Snappers, jacks, sharks are all easily catchable. I hooked 2 monsters at dusk on livebaits that took 150 yards of line with 100lb braid and a locked down clutch. So as an angler and boater- it’s got everything you need!
However the accommodation really lets it down. Everything is broken or dilapidated and just plain dirty. The pool is tiny (Which we knew before we traveled). The shelves are full of dusty old rubbish and the house is decorated with junk furniture. It’s not the kind of thing that will spoil your holiday (if you don’t let it)- but at this price point it really isn’t good enough.
You need to be aware of the docking situation too. There is only 1 position where the boat is safely moored and it involves coming off of vaca cut into the little bay and then turning the boat around and sliding it in between the posts. I would advise anyone who is not competent with boats to think very carefully about this. There’s a lot of current and it’s a very small space. We docked a twin engine 30 foot contender in there- so it’s possible if you have a lot of experience with boats and a crew to help rope it up.
It’s a place with great potential- but its beat up and isn’t worth the money.
