PaparaSea has a fun bit of movie history. The cottage was used during the filming of the movie “Merv.” The beloved dogs featured in the film stayed right here during production, and the sofa in the living room even appeared on the set as part of Zooey Deschanel’s apartment. It’s a small piece of film history that adds a unique story to this charming beach cottage.

The house and yard were wonderful! Everything was clean and very well stocked. The outdoor shower was a big plus. The dogs loved the yard and the bed on the porch! I would definitely stay here again.
We chose the hottest weekend of the year to get away to Kure beach but we stayed in the coolest old style beach house! Modernized in all the right ways, we loved staying here. Bess very comfy, great private backyard, comfortable screened porches and a couple minutes walk to the prettiest of beaches. We will definitely stay here again
Couple with small dog enjoyed our stay! You could hear the waves and being off season was very quiet. Enjoyed sitting on front porch people watching. Easy walk to beach and restaurants. Ate an amazing meal at Freddie’s.
Beach House was perfect - location, accommodations, you name it! Erin was quick to respond, friendly and hospitable. I would certainly recommend and stay again in the future.

Thank you so much for your kind review, and you were a great guest!! I would absolutely host you again at any of our properties. Take care and glad you had a great stay with the guys!
My husband and I had a very nice stay at this cottage this past week. We loved the close proximity to the beach, as well as the fully fenced-in back yard, which worked well for our 2 senior dogs. We also really enjoyed the fire pit, and we used it several times during our stay. The owners were incredibly nice and very prompt to answer any questions that we had during the stay. We would love to stay here again in the future.
Perfect location for a family with kids, short walk to the beach, stores, and restaurants. Plenty of room to park and the outdoor shower is a game changer!!
Lots of space in the backyard for the pup. The screened porches allowed us to be outdoors most of the time without BUGS! Highly recommend.
We had an excellent stay at Erin’s home! The location is ideal - just a block from the beach and a short 4 minute walk to the Kure Beach pier. We brought our dogs to the beach and Erin’s place is perfect for traveling with dogs - great outdoor yard, puppy-proofed interior. The home is comfortable and has all the essentials you’ll need for a beach trip. We would love to stay here in the future and highly recommend this home!

Hi Kim, thank you for the outstanding endorsement, and we're so happy that you enjoyed your stay. Please reach out to me for a future visit directly. Thanks, Erin
We celebrated 2 birthdays and a half birthday while there. It was a short walk to the beach and a lovely area. Quiet neighborhood with a great back yard to wind down in the evenings. The fire pit was large with good seating. The cottage is small (as described) and we fit there perfectly. The 2 screened porches made it feel bigger and allowed us to spread out. I was worried it would be awkward for so many adults to share one bathroom, but the outside shower helped a lot with that. We had a small problem that the host addressed quickly and was resolved to our satisfaction. I would recommend this place, especially if you are traveling with your dog. Ours loved it! Also felt this was one of the simplest check-in/out with VRBO. Thank you for that.Anxiously awaiting the movie Merv so I can enjoy familiar locations while watching.
I really enjoyed this property but I took my 82 year old mother. The rocks out front and shower really presented problems for her. This is a wonderful place for families but if you have someone confined to a wheelchair it is a challenge. Erin is very helpful and this property has everything a family or just friends needs. Thank you Erin.
We had a good time. The beach was very close to the house. However when we arrived until the time we left there were 1000's of flies due to a fruit tree in the backyard right next to the patio so sitting outback was unpleasant. We did take our dogs with us and when I first got there I checked the perimeter of the fenced in yard to make sure no gaps where dogs could get out and it was perfect and 6ft tall. There were a few piles of dog poop in the yard upon arrival however me being a dog person No big deal. When I checked out the host messaged me within the hour to let me know that she was making a claim due to leaving some dog poop in the back yard and a dog poop smear on the couch cover and it smelling like dog poop and beer in the house. And states she will have to use a diffuser to get the smell out. I may have overlooked a pile or two unintentionally. The couch cover was the kind that is very easy to remove and wash. So I am unsure why that would be a big deal, but again if i would have seen it, I would have cleaned it up. Also, no-one in our group drank any beer in the house at all. We sat at the benches outside for the one night around the firepit and that is where we drank. So again I am unsure how the house would smell like beer. I did leave the remaining of the 12 pk in the fridge. I guess I assumed that the 200 cleaning fee would be to clean and wash the sheets and couch cover. Which mind you I did have one of my sheets over the couch cover. I did pay extra for the protection plan when booking with vrbo. So I am hopeful that a diffuser and the washing of bedding/ couch cover being washed will be covered, as I truly do not think that we caused any damage to the property.

Once in a while, you have a guest that can leave a really bad taste in your mouth. Since this guest used the review to speak about a private conversation that I was trying to have with her, and not the whole world, I’ll go ahead and explain my side of the story:
Upon check-out, I received a call from a team member that inspects and troubleshoots before a new guest arrives. I got a run down of problems including beer smell, poop on the couch cover, poop in the backyard. Rarely do we have such issues. So I sent a private message to let her know I might have to place a claim. Come today, I found out from my Housekeeping Manager that 2 sets of sheets had to be replaced due to blood stains. My neighbors complained to me about the constant smell of weed as well.
In closing, we have the most wonderful fig tree in the backyard and if A guest happens to be staying there while it is blooming, they are welcome to the abundance of fresh figs. Our assumption was that this guest would enjoy such a thing. And since they stayed for a week they could have let us know, especially since we live nearby.
Thank you, Erin
Our anniversary is the end of October so if we choose a beach getaway a pool really isn't up there on the priority list. But a nice yard for our pup and a firepit is exactly what we like to see. The fact that you can see the ocean from the parking area is a huge plus also. We spent the cool nights around the campfire and the 70 degree days walking all around the beach and carolina beach state park (highly recommend). Ate our anniversary dinner at Stoked which was awesome with a nice view! Location was great, backyard great, if it were a little warmer I'd have used the outdoor shower every day!

Our stay
The accommodations were good and it is close to the beach. The neighbors were a bit loud and didn’t seem too cleanly. We had to leave early and did attempt to cancel originally. Request was denied so we paid for a week we didn’t get.
Needed a place for us to stay during the move in weekend for our son at UNCW where we could bring our dog. Excellent back yard fenced in for dogs. Thanks!
This house was only a couple mins away from the beach- awesome location ! Loved that is was dog friendly ! Huge fenced in backyard. Indoor shower was tiny but outdoor shower made up for it. When we arrived the trash cans outside were full and smelly - had to move farther away from the main door . Overall great stay though - loved all the ceiling fans in the rooms.

About the host
Hosted by Erin Maher
Hi, I’m Erin. I’m a New Orleans native who believes life is best lived near good food, great music, and the water.
My husband Steve and I fell in love with the Carolina Beach and Kure Beach area years ago and slowly began building our little dream on the island. What started as a single cottage project turned into a passion for restoring and caring for these charming beach homes so guests could experience the same relaxed coastal lifestyle that made us fall in love with the area.
Steve is the practical one who keeps everything running smoothly, while I focus on the design and the small details that make each cottage feel warm, comfortable, and welcoming rather than like a typical rental.
We take a lot of pride in our homes and truly enjoy hosting. Our goal is always to create a place where guests can slow down, relax, and enjoy time together — whether that means morning coffee on the porch, long beach walks, evenings around the fire pit, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze.
We try to make sure everything you need for a great beach stay is ready when you arrive, and we’re always happy to help with local recommendations or anything else that makes your trip more enjoyable.
For us, these cottages are more than rentals — they’re places where memories are made. We hope you feel right at home here and love the island as much as we do. 🌊
Why they chose this property
What we love most about this neighborhood is that it captures the peaceful, small-town charm that makes Kure Beach so special. It’s a quieter part of the island where you can truly relax, enjoy the ocean air, and experience the slower rhythm of coastal living.
At the same time, everything you might want is just a short walk away. Start the morning with coffee from a local café, take a stroll along the beach, or enjoy breakfast at one of the nearby oceanfront diners. In the evening, guests love walking to dinner at the beloved Freddie’s Restaurant, famous for its Italian specialties and welcoming atmosphere.
The nearby Kure Beach Pier is another favorite spot. It’s a gathering place for fishing enthusiasts, families, and anyone who enjoys watching the waves and the activity of the beach. There’s also a wonderful pavilion and play area for children, making it a great place for families to spend time together.
Throughout the week, the area comes alive with community events including live music and a local farmers market where you can enjoy fresh produce, local goods, and the friendly spirit of the island.
For us, this neighborhood offers the best of both worlds — peaceful island living with just enough activity nearby to make every day feel like a vacation. 🌊
