About this property

Secluded Swan Family Home on Beautiful Flathead Lake

The Swan Family Home is a Flathead Lake-front property, perched above the water in a woodsy, private, and quiet setting. Watch the kids from the many decks as they swim from the private, gravel beach. Listen to the circling osprey and the waves on the shore. Enjoy campfires and s'mores on the beach with the kids.

Influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, the house was designed and built by an artist-engineer. The interior has unique, handcrafted features: a stone fireplace, curving spiral stair, and picture windows to follow the changing light. Two of the bedrooms have their own decks.

The unique character and charm do not mean you have to suffer. The year-round home is comfortable with central heat, AC, and modern appliances: Full kitchen with double oven, 5-burner electric range, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, all cooking and eating utensils, and bed linens furnished. Gas BBQ. Wireless Internet. There is a garage and a shed with wood for that morning fire with your coffee.

Come enjoy the beach, the wild animals, and the quiet: canoe, swim, and relax to the sounds of the water.

Picture perfect retreat on Flathead Lake!
This is a great property for families to enjoy nature and the lake, we had a whole deer family (two spotted fawns, mom, and antlered buck) playing on the property while we watched - completely enchanting. The dock was great to swim off of and allowed my daughter-in-law's family to come over by boat to visit. The kitchen is especially well-equipped for entertaining, with a huge dining room table (we easily sat 8 for dinner). the washer and dryer were top of the line and made it nice to be able to do a little wash as needed. Mac & Karen were gracious and informative hosts, and learning the history of the home was amazing, as Mac helped his dad build it! All in all a great vacation and wonderful respite from the pressures of daily life during Covid. We will be back!!

A Perfect Fit
We have been to the Swan Family Home a number of times over several years. The property suited our young family years ago and suits it just as well now with a grandchild. The home is laid out perfectly for friends and family and is very, very well stocked. The bay is wonderful and the location is secluded but close enough to Polson for a quick grocery run. We look forward to our return!

Flathead Lake Gem
This was our second time staying at this property and once again were very pleased! The cabin is spacious and has everything you need. It is located on a quiet cove which was perfect for boating and swimming, even when the lake was rough elsewhere. We hope to be back again.

So relaxing and homey.
Morning: Drank coffee in eating area enjoying gorgeous view. Afternoon:. Sunned ourselves on shore that provides both sun and shade. Jumped in clear, refreshing, calm, quiet bay. Repeat. Evening:. Roasted marshmallows over beach firepit. Played cards. Night:. Slept soundly in comfortable bed. Perfect vacation!! Also loved air-conditioning, character of home and big room that cousins slept in.

Loved the location on a secluded bay on the lake. Not much boat or road traffic. House is updated and well equipped. The "Big Room" nicely accomodated the cousins. Enjoyed days at the lake: paddle boarding, swimming, canoeing. Wonderful week with family on Flathead!

Charming home on a beautiful quiet bay.
A wonderful week at Flathead. We loved the well-maintained inviting home with all its character and little details. We especially loved the big room because it allowed all the cousins to hang out together. Mac and Karen were very easy to work with, and we enjoyed learning the history of the home. Cat Bay was a very peaceful and calm area. We loved that we could have either shade or sunshine all day. We will be back!

Just what we needed!
We loved staying at the Swan family home. Mac Swan took care of our every need, and the house was set up to accommodate a family like ours perfectly. Everything we needed to cook at home was close at hand and In good working order. The Wi -Fi was a lifesaver, as I had to run some meetings, and do some other work while vacationing. The view are wonderful, and we made good use of the canoe, visiting some small islands about a half mile out. We’re already talking about coming back next year.

Fourth of July vacation
We had an amazing vacation at the swan home. Mac was a wonderful host and has an amazing property. There were six adults and eight children and there was plenty of room for everyone. The dock is great for people of all ages to swim from. I would definitely stay here again as would everyone in my family.

Summer vacation
We had a wonderful time at the Swan home. Mac and Karen met us and showed us around the property, making us feel very welcome. The house is fully equipped, nothing fancy, just comfortable. The lake is beautiful, we took canoe jaunts to explore the lake. We spent hours swimming, reading, relaxing by the water. Mac and Karen gave us a ride around the lake in their boat, which was an extra treat. It was perfect. I hope we can return for another vacation.

Absolutely beautiful!!! Well worth it. Spent alot of time on the water and on the dock. The house was the perfect size for all 10 of us. Nice to have all the necessities. I even baked a birthday cake and found the cake pan. It was secluded but not far from town either. Only problem was the wasps were out in full strength on the dock. I had an allergic reaction. Maybe they like margarita's and beer also. He, he.I definitely recommend this place. Thanks Mac.

"Mr. Swan" - So, I think I'm okay w/calling you "Mac" now! We had such a fabulous experience staying at your home. We found everything we needed to be comfortable. All the kids (ages 20, 17, 13, 6, 6 AND 6) found something to do and enjoy. We came to think of the deer as our family pets! We especially enjoyed the seclusion of the bay and the way in which it is protected from the wind. I had to work a few hours each day but didn't mind doing so because I had such great surroundings. We look forward to staying at your home again!

Regarding your rental, we just treated it like it was our own....and had a tough time giving up the "adoption!" You probably don't hear this from everyone but I was awed by the woodworking details, the numerous homemade built-ins and the obvious craftsmanship that went into the home's construction. (Don't tell Mary I told you that, she thinks I'm nuts)! The soul of its builders and family still remains and we feel fortunate to have been able to share this special place! I am attaching a photo of your "pet" deer which apparently love eating from your flower beds, shrubs and trees! They also enjoy the property!! Scott

We really enjoyed our stay at the vacation home of Mac and Karen Swan in Polson, Montana this past Sept. We went after Labor Day, less crowded in the parks, and the weather was wonderful with just a hint of fall in the air. The home is very comfortable and charming and built as a labor of love by Mac's father year's ago. It is on a secluded cove and very peaceful if you are looking to escape the pressures of "city" life. Mac and Karen greeted us upon arrival and made us feel very welcome from the start. We stayed for a week and it was a wonderful setting for a family reunion for our extended family living in the west. Each night we would have a campfire by the lake, roasting marshmellows and catching up. We would love to go back to Polson in the future and stay at the Swan Family Home when we do. We spent a week at the Swan Family Home last summer and had an absolutely wonderful time. It is located on a secluded bay and we had the feeling there was one else around, even though the town of Polson is just a few minutes away. Having rented a number of properties in the past, we found the home to be very well equipped (including a hair dryer in every bathroon and a canoe at their private dock). Mac and Mary went out of their way to be great hosts. It's too bad it's a two-day drive from home. Otherwise we would be frequent visitors.

The owners: Mac and Karen Swan and their daughter Mariah Swan and Mary Swan and her son Ken. We grew up on Flathead Lake and have lived and worked in Montana throughout our lives.

Why they chose this property

One of the unique areas on Flathead Lake, Cat Bay is particularly remote with the old-time feel of Montana the way it used to be. We offer modern amenities in a quiet setting. You'll wish you could stay on and on.

What makes this property unique

Built as a family project over the years, the original cabin was framed in 1957, bedrooms and bath added in 1964, garage, studio, and third bedroom and bath completed in 1969. Entryway was completed in 1972. We finished an extensive update in 2017 with new flooring, countertops, sinks, and faucets.
The Swan Family has enjoyed these three timbered acres away from the cares of the world, the clear waters lapping against the gentle gravel beach, the calls of the osprey overhead, and communing with the animals who make their home here too.
Bliss is lingering over coffee on the sunny morning deck--fledgling hawks casting quick shadows through the timber during their flight lessons to the knock of pileated woodpeckers on the pines.
