About this property

A Night in a Caboose

The Glacier County Historical Museum, 45-minutes from Glacier National Park, offers you an authentic experience in our 1981 Burlington Northern caboose #12424. No frills, just history.

A historian will meet guests at the caboose for a discussion bringing you into the world of a railroader. What was the role of the caboose on the railroad? Who worked in them? What are lantern signals? Why are there no cabooses anymore? Spend the night shift on BN caboose #12424 and learn the answers to these questions and more.

Railroading comes alive at night. Relax in the reversible chairs up in the cupula and watch the sun set. Relax in outdoor chairs on the platform deck. Your caboose is also equipped with a table and chairs, an office desk and chair at each end of the car, and two single cots. A full breakfast is served in the morning.

Come early and have a tour of the museum buildings. The museum grounds will be yours to wander after hours.

Our shower and restroom facility is located a short walk away. Battery-operated lantern will be provided for after-dark visits.

The Glacier County Historical Museum offers several buildings with exhibits which showcase the history of northcentral Montana on the hi-line. - Lewis & Clark, homesteading, native American artist John L. Clarke, the oil industry, and more! Our "Overnight in History" program provides guests opportunities to stay in our homestead house, oil worker's house (1935) or the 1981 Burlington Northern caboose.

Why they chose this property

The museum decided to open its doors with this new "Overnight in History" program in late 2020. We are located near Glacier National Park, just off of Hwy 2 outside of Cut Bank, Montana.

What makes this property unique

Our "Overnight in History" program provides guests opportunities to stay in our homestead house (1917 reproduction), oil worker's house (1935) or the 1981 Burlington Northern caboose. The museum grounds are available to guests to wander around after hours.

The museum, for this program, is labeled as a "guest ranch" - in other words, we are offering an experience. This is not like "glamping." Our amenities are quality, but simple. Our goal is to provide guests with an accurate idea of history.
