About this property

Hvalfjarðarsveit Cottage with Large Wooden Deck, Mountain View + Great Location

Remote, quiet location, yet only 40 minutes from Reykjavík.
Our Cottage is located in West Iceland with a view over Lake Eiðisvatn, the Hvalfjörður fjord and the spectacular mountains around the fjord.
It's behind the small village of Melahverfi, which is signposted on the ring road and around 15 minutes away from Akranes.

In autumn and winter, this is also a good place to watch the Northern Lights.
Although the view is wonderful, you can't help but see an aluminium plant a few kilometres away. We don't mind this sight - we live in our house next to the Cottage.

Our cottage has a spacious living, dining and kitchen area, 1 bathroom (sink, toilet and shower) and 2 bedrooms. In one bedroom can sleep 3 people, the other 2 people.
The large veranda with panoramic view also invites you to linger.

You can park your car on our property directly in front of the parking sign for guests.
The path on the left side leads past our house, directly to the Cottage.

If you have questions or need help - no problem ...
We live next door - you can contact us at any time !

Stunning view!!

Kathrin was amazing at communication throughout the whole booking process. Any question answered quickly. The house is in the most gorgeous setting, absolutely breath taking. We also saw the northern lights! A brilliant location for seeing them as hardly any light pollution. The house is lovely and warm and was a brilliant base, which was fully equipped for exploring Iceland.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful cottage

We had a fantastic stay in this lovely cottage just off Route 1 outside Akranes. The view is amazing and we enjoyed simply sitting in the wonderful lounge and watching the ever changing scenery and skies that Iceland is blessed with. The cottage is very well appointed and clean and had everything that we needed for our stay. Kathrin and Klaus were fantastic hosts and gave us tips on seeing the northern lights and even let us know when they were appearing in the evening, which was much appreciated. At the end of our stay some bad weather rolled in and made it difficult to get to out next place we were staying in Iceland and they offered all sort of helps and weather/road updates to help us out, which was really very kind of them indeed. We would not hesitate to stay here again and thoroughly recommend it.

One night to view the Northern lights

We booked for 1 night, to extend our stay having been elsewhere, but the promise of the Northern Lights meant last minute changes. This place didn’t disappoint. We got a warm night, comfortable and well equipped, and the setting allowed us to fully enjoy a huge Aurora display from the decking area. The hosts were helpful and friendly.

Great place to stay!

Great accommodation with everything you need from a holiday rental for our 5 night stay. There were supplies of herbs, tea, hot chocolate and other essentials so you dont have to remember too much after a flight and drive to the cottage. Good touch! Great views across the lake. Cosy and warm after a day in the wind and snow! Great views to hunt out the Northern Lights. The owners are lovely and are on hand if you encounter any difficulties. The accommodation feels very private even though the owners live next door. Would definitely recommend!

3 Night Stay In Iceland

We originally booked so my wife could possibly view the Northern Lights as a late birthday break. The owners were very welcome upon arrival and left us to our own devices to enjoy the cabin and the well equipped facilities. The cabin has everything you need for a stay, and was lovely and cosy, even though the Iceland weather was cold and very windy. The views to wake up to are absolutely fantastic, and if you are lucky,..(as we were),..it is ideal for viewing the Northern Lights. Many thanks again for a wonderful stay. Gary and Fiona Paterson

Wonderful Accomodation and welcome

What a lovely location this is. It was a little challenging for us to find at 2.00am in a snowstorm though the directions given were perfect. The accommodation is self-contained but has a spacious feel, it's warm (we had temperatures of -4C outside), and is set in a stunning location. Ideally located for road trips in all directions, we manged to take in the golden circle, Reyjavik, Blue Lagoon and many other sites heading into Snaesfellsjokull Pennisula. Highly reccommened.

lovel warm secluded lodge with great views

great lodge, everything you needed although a little further out of Reykjavik than we expected. Having said that well placed for going to the north west of the island and only an hours drive into the city.

Great property

My wife and I stayed here between 16th-20th Jan, 2019. It's a bit secluded, but a lovely setting, just set in front of lake, which was frozen when we visited. We hired a car from Keflavik airport and it's about 90 minutes drive along some stunning roads, but when we where there, there was lots of snow, so was a bit tricky at some points, but just took it easy and it's fine. The snow plough' are out all the time! there is a tunnel you have to go under which on documentation says you have to pay a toll, but that is no longer the case and you just go on through without being stopped. The lodge has a log burner, but you have to take your own wood, which you can buy in shops. The closet town is Akranes about 20 minutes drive. The owners who live in the house adjacent to the property were very nice and even cleared the path to our lodge when it snowed. Well worth a visit, and because you are in the countryside have a better chance of seeing the Northern lights, would be lovely in the summer as well.

VERY NICE STAY IN A COSY COTTAGE!

We had a very nice long weekend in Iceland. The cottage was cosy, warm (despite of very strong wind outside) and very clean. For two couples the cottage was perfect (two bedrooms). I can recommend this cottage for everyone.

A must see for everyone...

Cosy cottage certainly lived up to its expectations. A most idyllic place. Extremely clean with everything you will need. Beautiful views and peaceful location. The owners are lovely and helpful and the most perfect hosts we have come across. The night sky on a clear night was a truely magical experience. Would like to definitely return one day. Thank you for everything. Kevin and Dawn.

Beautiful views from this lovely cottage.

The place was immaculately clean. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The best water in Iceland is supplied to the cottage: soft and milky (you will have a good hair day every day :-)) Good location for visiting Reykjavik, the blue lagoon (you MUST go there!), Gullfoss and Geyser. There’s a toll road that is 1000 Krona if you want to take the quickest route south. I unreservedly recommend this for a break in Iceland.

A warm and cosy cabin with fantastic views

We felt very welcome right from the outset and the cabin was very warm and cosy. Well worth the drive and still very close to Reykjavic. We had fantastic weather visiting the blue lagoon and the geysers over the two days. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes the outdoors.

Cozy cottage

We arrive for a weeks stay, in a snow storm, our host came to guide us up to the cottage, and when weather settled guided us to the supermarket, dug out the path for us in the mornings, kepts us informed with weather reports, beautiful Island with all the snow & sunshine, just wished we could have seen more.

Just perfect!

We booked the cabin after reading on reviews that aurora can be sighted from it, and it really can! We saw a display on the first night :) The cabin is well equipped and really cosy! We didn’t need to light the wood burner, as the radiators heated all rooms really well. If you fancy getting the burner going, you will need to buy your own wood from a shop, as it’s not provided. We hired a car and drove from airport, which took about 40 mins. Pretty easy to find with satnav and instructions which are given from owners before arrival. We drove part of the golden circle tour, which was awesome, we headed to Akranes town to see lighthouse. We visited Reykjavík (a visit to Kaffi vinyl is a must). We were a party of 4 vegans/vegetarians and found being in Iceland easy! Supermarket Netto was fantastic for vegan supplies, literally 5 mins from airport, so stock up on supplies from there. We all had the best time, and I would recommend this cabin 100%!!

Warm, cozy cottage overlooking a lake and great aurora viewing location.

The cottage is in a great location for viewing the northern lights. It is situated in the south-west of the island which has the least cloudiest sky. Being rural it does not suffer from the light pollution of towns such as Reykjavik. We visited during a new moon period when the sky was totally dark from 7pm to 7.30am. Saw the aurora five out of seven nights. The last night was the best with fifty per cent of the sky covered. Adda, Sigurjon and Jonella were very helpful with useful advice and a warm welcome. The cottage is situated in a small hamlet overlooking a frozen lake. It has all mod cons, two bedrooms and a very high standard of furnishings and cleanliness. The outside temperature was mostly below freezing but the cottage was always warm. Supermarkets can be found 15 minutes away in the coastal town of Akranes. There is plenty to see in this corner of Iceland and we thoroughly recommend a visit.

Very cosy and well equipped cottage with beautiful views across fjord.

The cottage was very well equipped, particularly the kitchen with nice touches like including tea towels, washing up liquid etc. The location was quiet with lovely views. The children enjoyed running around outside and watching the ponies in the field below. The location was convenient for Borgannes, Into the Glacier trip at Husafell and did the Golden Circle from here. We didn't meet the owners as they were on holiday themselves but we really aprreciated their attention to detail to make our stay comfortable.
