La Faute-sur-Mer is the southernmost seaside resort in the Vendée department. It is located in the Pertuis Sea, opposite the Île de Ré, near the Bay of Aiguillon.

The beaches of La Faute-sur-Mer stretch for 8 km from La Tranche-sur-Mer to the tip of the Pointe d'Arçay. Well sheltered, they offer opportunities for numerous water sports, including sand yachting. Four beaches are supervised. They all have a gentle slope, which is ideal for families with children. Some beaches are equipped for people with reduced mobility, but access from the car parks is a bit of a walk (via paved paths followed by sand).

La Faute-sur-Mer is one of the newest towns in the Vendée (1953 – separation from La Tranche-sur-Mer). The northern part (the area closest to La Tranche-sur-Mer) was reclaimed through land reclamation. To the south lies the Pointe d'Arçay (5 km long and still expanding, bordered by a maritime pine forest), a coastal spit formed by the sea and wind. It boasts some very beautiful, unspoiled beaches.
