Frustrating Start, Helpful Locals – A Mixed Experience in Sitka

Rating Details: The property manager was very unhelpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: I recently travelled to Alaska with my 75-year-old mother and spent part of our trip in Sitka, staying at 1 Monastery. While the accommodation had its charms, our experience was soured by poor support from the travel agent.Sitka Travel – Disappointing and OverbearingBooking with Sitka Travel was relatively simple, but the excessive paperwork and legal disclaimers were unnecessary — no other part of our Alaska trip required this level of admin.When it came to airport transport, they recommended Bayside and Martin’s Taxis. Martin’s never responded, and Bayside replied once, said they didn’t recognise my flight, then ghosted me. I asked Sitka Travel for help, and they pointed me to shuttle options — despite knowing none would be running at 11:00 p.m., when we were arriving. They offered no realistic alternatives and repeated the same unhelpful suggestions, even as I explained our situation.Meanwhile, they were quick to repeatedly remind me of the rules — warning about extra charges for early check-in or late check-out. I understand policies, but being constantly reminded of them, while being given no actual support, was grating and disrespectful.Snobb Hollow Inn, Anchorage – Excellent HostThe day before arriving in Sitka, we stayed at Snobb Hollow Inn in Anchorage, where our host Mandy was fantastic. She kindly arranged a taxi for us in advance. Hank from Baranof Taxis was excellent — reliable and kind. Wonderful place.

We spent 5 nights in Sitka and were very pleased with our cottage. It was comfortable and well equipped. The location was perfect. We could walk to town or along the harbor to Totem park. We will definitely plan to stay here again.
