About this property
Spacious, Historical, Magical, Designer Home, Prime Walkable Village Location!
All the charm of yesteryear with the comfort of the 21st century! Experience the age of "the Rusticators" - the wealthy settlers of the early 1900's in this 1904 Victorian rumored to be built by J.P. Morgan for his mistress (he kept several, leading to the nickname for the street as "Mistress Row"!) Owned by architects/interior designers for the past 25+ years, the house greets you with charm and style in every space. Grand columned entry porch/veranda with ample space to sit, sip and people watch, English garden, delightful outdoor dining area with gas grill. Well appointed spacious and charming rooms, old world (but updated!) kitchen with bells and whistles, sunny breakfast room, copper-sinked butler's pantry/bar with wine cooler, expansive foyer with decorative fireplace, comfortable and tranquil living room, dining room for 10 with additional cozy sitting area, family room/home theater with fold out English sofa, 3/4 first floor bathroom. Two different stairs lead to four bedrooms, including a newly redecorated master suite (king bed), another spacious bedroom with a king bed, one with a queen bed (newly decorated and upgraded), and one with two twins. There is an additional queen bed suite (with full bath) on the third floor as well as a generous laundry room. Coveted village location - quiet and enjoyable, but a stone's throw to all the activities you can imagine. You can walk everywhere!
All check-ins are self-check-ins. The home is spacious and the yard is completely private, with several private entrances. The location is quiet, walkable to all of downtown and the shore, and it easy to get to the Park and to other areas of interest.

About the host
Hosted by Kay and Augusto
We are a couple with four (now adult) children who have enjoyed living in Bar Harbor since 1995. After a five year search, we purchased this home for our growing family because of its size, location, intact historic elements, and great bones, but it needed a lot of work!! We are both architects and have lovingly restored this gem of a home to its glory while incorporating modern amenities/comforts (AC!) and our own touches. We own several other historic Bar Harbor properties as well -Emerson House, Mason House and the Cottage on Cottage - all of which we've lovingly restored and upgraded, We enjoy traveling (when not visiting our children 3/4 of whom live in Europe, or our family beach house in Brazil, we always rent homes when we travel and enjoy being able to provide similar comfort to other travelers!). At the end of our travels, we always cherish returning to this particular home, where we raised our family, made so many memories, and continue to do so. Outside of architecture and travel, Kay enjoys writing and Augusto is a magnificent photographer, cook and painter.
Why they chose this property
We purchased this home because having had few owners before us, it had retained most of its original features and charm, and as architects, we knew good bones when we saw them! Since then, the home has been totally renovated, and serves as an excellent design laboratory - even our most discerning clients have appreciated the hospitality and ambiance of this home! There is nothing like parking our cars and being able to walk to the grocery store, cinemas, restaurants, shore, parks, churches, and everything else Bar Harbor offers. One can enjoy the lively Main Street of Bar Harbor at whim, yet be back to relax on the tranquil tree-lined street in mere minutes. Sitting on the porch, we enjoy saying hello to the neighbors as they walk by, or dining in the garden on a delightful Maine evening!
What makes this property unique
The "butler's pantry" (the reason we fell in love with the house, though our eldest child was a bit disappointed there was no actually butler included!) the fireplaces, the wooden fretwork, the massive entry columns, oversized front door, the diamond paned windows...they just don't make them like this anymore! Elegant and spacious, but livable and oh, so well located!
