About the host
Hosted by Carolyn Calfee
The sound of the eagle flying overhead echoed against the red walls of the Rio Chama canyon. The kayak inched forward. The current carried us oh-so-slowly back to our land. Tom stopped and looked at Carolyn in disbelief: “How can we NOT be a part of this,” he asked? And so the eternal question…Did Abiquiu Lake find us? Or did we find it?
The serenity, the peace, the spirituality of the land and place – it was everything we were looking for as we started the second half of our lives. Had we earned the right to be here on this sacred land? That’s too hard to answer, but when this land found us and pulled us here permanently, the idea of The Grand Hacienda was born.
With a goal of providing exceptional experiences for our guests, we blended our previous careers in finance with our love of New Mexico – and our love of cooking, design, hospitality, history, and culture. Did it matter that our previous careers were in the finance industry, big corporate America, the rat race? No. But, maybe yes, because those experiences that we left behind helped us get here to this place. Without the backing of our previous careers, The Grand Hacienda would not be possible.
Carolyn’s background in business development, marketing, customer service and strategy helped us craft the vision and brand that we wanted to offer our guests. Her love of collecting bones discovered on hikes matches the spirit of Georgia O’Keeffe. Tom’s love of special design, wabi sabi, and rock art led to him acting as the architect for the entire build. The spiritual awareness of the land opened up doors and understanding for us – and for our guests. It’s an energy, a feeling. It’s the ravens that circle us, Stanley and Ophelia, who have adopted us and share this space with us. Smudging ceremonies to both cleanse and give gratitude where the sage smoke reverberates into the air. It is a world to rediscover who we are.
