A classic 1930s lake house on a quiet, spring-fed lake in Aitkin, MN; thoughtfully updated with real hardwood floors, a wood stove, a retro vibes kitchen with a breakfast bar overlooking the property, and a renovated bathroom, all steps from your private dock. The sprawling yard rolls right to the water's edge, surrounded by trees and the kind of stillness that's hard to find. Watch the sunset turn the water gold, paddle out on one of three SUPs, fish off the dock, or gather around the fire pit as loons call across the water.
The Space:
Up North Lake House is a classic 1930s lake house sitting right at the water's edge on a quiet, spring-fed lake in Aitkin County; thoughtfully updated while keeping the character that makes it feel like a place with history.
Original hardwood floors run throughout. The living room centers on a wood stove that earns its keep on cool fall evenings, with a sectional sofa, dining table with lake views, and a game shelf stocked with Monopoly, Risk, Yahtzee, Catch Phrase, bocce, and more. A cozy reading nook in the corner of the living room. The lakeside bedroom has a shiplap accent wall with mid-century chairs, afternoon light; it's easy to disappear into for an hour or an afternoon with a book.
The kitchen has been thoughtfully updated with a retro refrigerator, gas range with hood, and a breakfast bar that looks out over the lake and yard. All utensils and pans you need to cook a real meal is here.
The house sleeps up to 5 across three sleeping areas: a queen bedroom, a bunk room with twin-over-twin bunks, and a full-size sofa sleeper in the living room. The renovated bathroom features the original shiplap wood wall and a walk-in shower.
Outside, a sprawling lawn tumbles down toward the water, framed by trees on all sides. Three stand-up paddle boards are included, a private dock sits at the base of the property, and a fire pit anchors the yard for evenings under the stars.
Guest Access:
Guests of Up North Lake House LLC have full access to the entire single-level home, including the comfortable living room, fully equipped kitchen, and well-appointed bathroom. Both bedrooms, the Ice Fishing bedroom with a queen-size bed and the Lake Side Room with a bunk bed, are private spaces for your use. Outside, enjoy the waterfront access for swimming, fishing, or simply enjoying the lake view. Feel free to use the provided fire pit for evening gatherings under the stars. Additional amenities like air conditioning, heating, Roku TV, and wireless internet are available for your comfort and convenience.
The Neighborhood:
Nestled on the serene shores of Aitkin, Up North Lake House LLC offers a tranquil escape with easy access to the best of the area. While the lake itself is the main attraction, you'll find the charming town of Aitkin a short drive away. Explore local shops for unique finds and enjoy delicious meals at the area's restaurants. For those seeking adventure, nearby trails offer opportunities for hiking and biking, and in the winter, ice fishing is a popular activity. The surrounding area is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and experience the quintessential charm of a Minnesota lake town.
Getting Around:
A car is essential, and that's part of the appeal — you're leaving the city behind. The lake house is about 2 hours north of the Twin Cities, making it an easy Friday evening drive with the week barely in the rearview mirror.
Once you're here, most of what you need is right on the property or a short drive away. Aitkin has groceries, gas, and dining. In winter, the snowmobile trail crosses the lake directly, so you can ride straight from the yard. If you're trailering a boat in, a public launch is nearby.

This was a cute, clean, well equipped house on Long Lake. It suited our needs perfectly. Our kids have a house across the lake and could come pick us up on their pontoon.

About the host
Hosted by Joshua
We’re a couple who loves creating cozy, memorable spaces—and Up North Lake House LLC is one of our favorites. Originally built in 1930, we fully remodeled the home together, keeping its charm while updating it for comfort and convenience. We love getting away from the busyness of the cities to enjoy quiet time on the lake, and we’re excited to share that peacefulness with our guests. Hosting is a joy for us—we genuinely enjoy helping people feel welcomed, relaxed, and at home.
Why they chose this property
We chose this spot because it’s truly a hidden gem. Unlike some of the busier surrounding lakes, Long Lake is quiet, peaceful, and spring-fed, making it ideal for swimming, paddling, and just enjoying the stillness. We love how friendly and respectful the neighbors are—it’s a place where people wave and help each other out. Whether it's the call of loons or watching eagles soar over the water, this lakeside neighborhood is the perfect blend of natural beauty and small-town charm.
What makes this property unique
Our home is one-of-a-kind—a 1930s lake house with character, fully renovated for modern comfort, sitting just steps from the water’s edge. You’ll have front-row seats to amazing sunsets with our west-facing lake view, and a screened-in porch to enjoy quiet evenings or morning coffee. The peaceful setting, charming wood stove, thoughtful amenities, and access to snowmobile trails, paddle boards, and a fire pit make this place feel like a true escape. It's cozy, welcoming, and truly "Up North."
