About this property

Wild West Themed Private Cabin at the Off Grid B&B

Welcome to the Off Grid B&B! We are a newly launched, brand new for 2024, full service, short term rental, located just 25 minutes from the south rim of the Grand Canyon and 10 minutes from the Red Mountain hike in the Kaibab National Forest! Please read this entire description before booking!

Amenities: On our grounds, guests receive their own, private cabin with free coffee and snacks, free WIFI, hot showers, clean restroom, well-lit walkways and interiors, a full kitchen, an outdoor lounge with large fire pit and locally mined flagstone benches, laundry service, full menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner, and even a pet-sitting service so the family can enjoy the local amenities in total freedom. We are also kicking around the idea of ice-baths. We are equipped to have them, but we aren't sure there would be much call for them. Let us know in advance if you want to try it out, and we will set it up!

Access and location: The Off Grid B&B is located just beyond mile marker 161 headed northwest on highway 180, halfway between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. The property has a full nighttime view of the stars, and a full daytime view of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. Valle, also known as Grand Canyon Junction, which has a hardware store, gas stations, a lounge/bar, and a restaurant, is located another 4.6 miles to the northwest. Turning off Hwy 180, take the first road on the left (about 50 yards from the highway), then turn left between the traffic cones (another 20-30 yards), which will put you on the property of the Off Grid B&B. Follow the pathway and take the next left at the final traffic cone. The cabins will be just ahead.

The cabins: We currently have two private cabins available, with plans to add many more as the business grows. Each room includes a 10" Serta memory foam queen size mattress, and can accommodate as many as four guests. Please notify staff 24 hours in advance of booking to request up to two additional twin foam mattresses, at a cost of $10 each per night of stay. No more than four guests per room, per night, please. To book more rooms to accommodate as many as eight guests, please book early, as both cabins are hard to get at the same time. The rooms are themed around a travel experience in the American Southwest. The Route 66 Room is adorned with classic car emblems throughout the room, various state license plates, and matching curtains, lamp shades and quilt (when not out for cleaning). The Wild West Room is decorated with antlers, faux cowhide rug, country kitsch, and matching Native American curtains, lamp shades, and quilt. Each room includes five gallons of free, fresh, potable running water for hand washing, oral hygrine, to drink, and to refill guest water containers, with unlimited five-gallon refills at $5 each. A plant-based hand soap is also provided in each room.

Services and offerings: Books, board games and other items are available in the kitchen to bring back to the cabins, or to use at the lounge. Hammocks are also available to guests. Guests are asked to return all borrowed items to the kitchen shelves after use. Firewood is available at $25/bundle, but restricted to times outside of county burn bans. Laundry is available to all guests staying three or more days, at $30/load, understanding that laundry will be washed in a plant-based, fragrance-free detergent, and sun-dried on a clothing line. A menu is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices will be updated on the OffGridBandB website. Pet-sitting is also available, see below.

Pets: The Off Grid B&B is very pet friendly. The pet fee is $15 per pet, per night. And we also offer a $15 per pet, per day pet-sitting service while guests are away during the day. For the moment, we can only accept dogs in our dog run. Leads on ground stakes are also available. Cats will have a private kennel when available, to be kept inside the rooms. Pet-sitting guests must be home each night to care for their animals overnight. Guests must supply all food specific to their pet's diet, but water will be provided with the sitting fee. Fees must be paid prior to leaving animals at the property while guests are away. Any damage caused by any guest's animal to the room or grounds will result in a fee commensurate to the quantity and scope of the damage, with a minimum fee of $100. Aggressive or vicious animals will immediately be crated, and possibly required to be removed from the property entirely, at property manager's sole discretion. Off Grid B&B, LLC., accepts no liability from animal bites or attacks on other animals or people.

Facilities: As this is the driest region of the country, hot showers are provided, keeping in mind that we have a finite amount of water. Please limit showers to 5 minutes each, which helps keep from overtaxing the cumulative propane and water reserves used by all guests and staff. The kitchen is available to guests, including a sink and stovetop. Any use of the oven for baking must be approved, scheduled, and handled by staff. The lounge is available to all guests 24/7. We also plan to have a movie screen built on the property - check with OGBB staff to see if that's been constructed by the time of booking.

Notations and restrictions specific to off grid life in the desert: Please note that, due to being off grid and solely reliant on the sun for our electricity, the use of hot plates, flat irons, hair driers, heated blankets, and other high-impedance electronics are not allowed. Using them may pop a breaker which can only be reset by the property manager, and at their convenience and availability. Note that the property manager may or may not be on the property during any portion or the entirety of guest stay. Please note that these grounds are manicured as little as possible to remain in keeping with the aesthetic and harmony of the high desert environment. This means that certain dangers exist, including treading hazards such as spiny plants like cacti and prickly shrubs and bushes, animal dangers such as encounters with spiders and scorpions, nighttime tripping hazards from uneven ground and low-lying vegetation, and ambient conditions such as heat, arid climes, and high winds.

Other restrictions:
We built every inch of the Off Grid B&B with our own two hands. It took us a year, and we are very proud of what we have accomplished. So, please treat our cabins like they were your own. Use coasters to keep the surfaces unblemished, don't take our books or decorations out of the rooms, unless they are being returned to the library. If you let us know of any damage or extra dirty pet accidents in advance, we are much more likely to discount or even forego associated fees. There shall be no use of the fire pit during county-wide burn bans (which are frequently the cause of wildfires in this area). This could result in a fine and permanent member ban from staying at this location in the future. No fires are to be started outside the fire pit. Theft of any decorations, linens or any other property inside or outside the cabins will result in a fee, and will be charged based on the full cost of replacing the item. As we are working to uphold responsible, environmentally-friendly waste management at the OGBB, we employ the use of composting toilets, environmentally friendly soaps and detergents, trash separation, and upcycling of a variety of items. To that end, please adhere to the following rules while at the OGBB: 1. While in the rooms, please separate all trash by metals/glass, paper/cardboard, and "everything else" which includes food waste, and any products that may have come in contact with potential human pathogens. 2. While in the restroom, do not throw any toilet paper or hygienic products in the toilets - use the bins provided. 3. If you may suffer from an allergic reaction to plant-based cleaners, please bring your own soaps and/or shampoos, but keep the use of these items to an absolute minimum to keep from contaminating our fragile desert biome. 4. We employ a "separator" in our composting toilet, that forces liquids down and out of the front of the toilet, and keeps solids in the rear of the toilet. So, when using the sit-down toilet, please position yourself to accommodate this waste separation. 5. All damage from guests, pets, and service animals, will need to be financially remunerated. This is avoidable through the responsible care of our property, and helps us give the next guest just as relaxing a stay as we offered you. Please be kind and considerate!

Booking indicates understanding and agreement with the above terms.

About the host

Host profile image
The OGBB team is as interested in travel as they are experienced in it. The owner of Off Grid B&B, LLC, is former professor and international documentary filmmaker, Cyle O'Donnell, also known as the Travel Geek. He has released more than 30 films and hundreds of thousands of images from more than 40 countries on four continents. His latest film, a true crime documentary about corruption and a grassroots uprising in the American Southwest, inspired him to live permanently in Arizona. His first off grid construction was his 2.5-acre homestead, complete with solar electricity, gravity water systems, geo-thermal heat, ergo-thermal cooling, rain catchment, bio-fuels, a bio-decomposition station, a fully functioning permaculture-designed greenhouse, and even a drive-in movie screen well inside the borders of the Kaibab National Forest. The manager of OGBB, Heather Tucker, has a long history of covering the Western states, a green thumb, and a knack for horse whispering. Together, they are on the premises nearly 100% of the time. So guest needs, as well as cool stories, are literally within ear-shot. Together, they have built every square-inch of the Off Grid B&B.

Why they chose this property

The Valle area of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is as off grid as any community in the world, with more solar panels and wind generators than residents living there! It was the sole intention to keep the Off Grid B&B as close to in harmony with that mentality as possible.

What makes this property unique

From biogas and bio-soils for the garden, to out-of-the-box thinking about in-house running water and waste management, the Off Grid B&B isn't just a star-lit vacation from the city life. It's an education in living in harmony with the environment. Included in each room is a booklet of off grid systems and techniques that visitors can do or build at home to help lower their carbon footprint. On the OffGridBandB website is also a host of tutorial videos and information that is updated all the time as the OGBB grows!
